Well seeing as its the summer season and most of us flock to the coast, it's a pretty good opportunity to remind everyone how to safely use their recovery gear when they get bogged.
So "strap" (see what I did there) yourselves in for an action packed little video.

Awesome vid mate, very well explained demo. Sucks about the CV 😬 Soft shackles definitely seem to be a much better alternative solution to metal. Keep up the great work. 👍

Thanks mate - yeah the CV sucked....but a couple silver linings to the event, it was close to home, didn’t impact on a trip and now I’ve got spare parts. Yeah the soft shackles are a game changer....good old technology and innovators making things better every day!!!

Greetings from Southern California! Great vid. Worth a thought....I also carry a garden rake in addition to a shovel. The rake will move a LOT of sand from in front of your tires and with the lifting motion of a shovel. And you can use the rake to level your campsite or get rid of rocks. G’day.

Thanks mate - great thinking indeed....might need to see if I can find a home for the rake 🤔. Appreciate your support - make sure you Subscribe and check out my other videos 😁.

....and withOUT the lifting motion of a shovel. I have a vertically mounted tool rack on the back bumper that holds my axe, shovel, and rake. Bigger truck though, a Fuso Canter. Big truck, big tools.

Newbie here. Trying to understand things. You say to use a soft shackle when connecting 2 straps. But you used a metal D ring to attach the straps to the stuck truck. Just wondering why that is ok. Thanks for all the info.
@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the attachment point on the vehicle, if it has sharp edges which can damage a soft shackle I would prefer to use a D ring or bow shackle…..if it has rounded corners then I’ll use a soft shackle on it as well. As for joining straps, this should only ever be done with a soft shackle and it should never be done with a metal shackle….just image how much energy is stored in those straps during a recovery & if one was to fail then that energy turns the metal shackle into a projectile….I’ve experienced it first hand and it’s bloody scary. Hopefully that clarifies thing for you 🤷🏻‍♂️

I would like to also add as a qualified rigger be cautious when running synthetic material against synthetic material. It creates synthetic burn and if loaded for enough time will actually burn from friction and damage the synthetic surfaces contacting each other and weaken your expensive equipment and worst case scenario fail on you. Please protect these surfaces if doing this or use a hard shackle. Not trying to be negative but I have seen equipment fail at work and play from this practice. A great presentation though mate cheers!

Thanks mate - yeah I touched on it in the video, I wasn’t surprised it happened due to the age and hardship they have endured....and guess I was lucky it happened so close to the mechanics.....was a little surprised it happened on sand, but they do add quite a bit of load to then. No point dwelling on it - just get it fixed and continue with the trips. Silver lining is I’ve got spare parts now 😁

I got it from Lifestyle 4WD - it’s the Bushranger 2 piece shovel, so should be available from quite a few places.

Damn snapping a CV on a dune would have sucked the enjoyment out of that day!!! Great vid! Have you ever used crawl control to pull the 200 out of a sand bog? That's my first recovery choice before getting the max tracks out. I set mine on medium speed, it saves a lot of digging hahah

My old dinosaur predates crawl control 😂😂😂 - the 07,08,09 models didn’t get it....not sure if that’s a good or bad thing....don’t know what your missing out on when you don’t have it to begin with 🤔.

Aren’t the Maxxtrac the first option for recovery (after using a shovel)? Don’t need another vehicle and less stress on the recovery. And if this is an instructional video on recovery, should this not be mentioned? Correct me if I’m wrong as I want to know the best procedure.

Did you watch the entirety of the video? Because I also demonstrated using maxtrax. It’s all obviously dependent upon the situation - generally yes I’ll go for maxtrax, but you’ll find a time when they don’t work, you will end up using a strap, so the tutorial is provided to show people the safe way to use the recovery strap.

We showed the worst of in our Rocks to Reefs Ep1 - I found it pretty straight forwards to drive....but another mate in a 70 thought it was the hardest tracks he’s ever driven.....so each to there own. 32”s, 2” lift and good line choice or a locker or traction control will see you to the top easily.

Careful like choices in about 2 spots and you’ll be fine. Low range will be required as it’s steep and maybe some lower tyre pressures.
