Lake Wainamu lies within the Waitakere Ranges in West Auckland, very close to the beautiful black sand Bethells Beach (aka Te Henga).
There is a looped track around Lake Wainamu and great tall sand dunes which are super fun to sand board down. Just remember that the steeper slope you go, the more challenging and tiring the climb back up is! We heard that cardboard doesn't work so well on these slopes so opted for a cheap body board with a smooth underside.
You can reach the lake via a stream walk that you simply follow all the way around (NB: your feet will get wet most of the way) or you can cross over the stream and go via the sand dune but note that there are sections of it which are on private property which should be respected.
We chose to go via the sand dunes so that we would be already at the top ready for our sandboarding fun. Also as it's black sand, it can get extremely hot in sunny weather so wear proper shoes. We wore jandals/sandals and the black splash was at times scorching.
There is no cellphone reception there and parking is pretty limited so park considerately or use the overflow parking further down the road. The closest toilets are at Bethells beach which is about 2 mins away by car or about a 10 min walk.
The cascading waterfall is located about halfway around the Lake Wainamu track and if you go up to the further levels like we did, be careful with your footing.
Ramen Station is located in New Lynn so it was about 40 mins drive from Lake Wainamu carpark. With Peter's dish he ordered extra chashu (pork slices) and extra corn. The ramen dishes were a yummy treat after a fun but tiring day out at Bethells.
