Well, I am fairly new at roasting. I have done hours of research watching many talented people and their machines roast beans. I have studied all about timing, heat, curves, cooling, grinding, brewing and drinking coffee. I drink about 50 oz each morning and 30 oz at dinner. I have tried many different brands of specialty coffee and roasted my own beans. I have been checking out tons of roasting machines, drum and hot air. In the end, I have pretty much perfected the taste I like . As James Hoffman says, it is all about what you like. No two people have the same taste. Therefore, with my large stainless bowl and very hot air gun, I can roast some of the most pretty med roast beans with outstanding taste as well as dark roast you can't tell the difference in my beans and Starbucks dark beans. All about trial and error. I roasted some beautiful beans today at a med roast, total time nine minutes. In the end, I will keep my hot air gun and bowl and leave all those expensive machine to you all. Chef Jerry, Irmo South Carolina USA 4.12.2024

Nice review! I personally prefer the small footprint of the kaffelogic nano 7 and the terrific software for making custom profiles.

Gene Cafe is the best and cheaper. You can get replacement parts and only cost 600 us dollars. I have had mine for three years and love it. you can put it under the vent hood to control the smoke. Also the Behmor is also a very good with five roast profiles or manual roast and even cheaper. these two will roast up to 400grams also. I buy my beans from Burman Coffee or Sweetmarias. I just roast mine to second crack. Gene Cafe is all manual, you just set temp and time and roast to your liking.

Thanks for your comment! I haven't tried the behmor yet, but I have a gene cafe as well, and I prefer the sandbox. I get a much much better roast that I can control compared to the gene cafe which has no ability to track the roast temp over time. I agree that the yield is a bit small on the Sandbox, but the gene cafe is a 200g machine and I've gone up to 230g before I start to get uneven roasts.

havn't tried it I had a freshroast that only roasted about cup of beans but loved the tast and had 3 roast profiles. Don't see the one I had. it was bigger around and had a chaff collector in the lid. was a good roaster until I left it on an electric burner. lol

I am looking into getting this roaster or the kaleido m1. Thete is a nice discount on the kaleido (not the artisan version) and this brings the price to a similar level. What are your thought about these 2 roasters
@beanobsessedroasters9073
@beanobsessedroasters9073 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry but the ROR that you are measuring in the Sandbox is actually not the same as Scott Rao describes. The Sandbox probe measures air temp outside of the drum. Therefore you don’t actually get a bean temp reading. Check out the Kaffelogic Nano 7e as an alternative.
@homecafecharlie
@homecafecharlie 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, but are the two not connected? Smoothly declining ROR would also apply to drum temp but the beans internal temp would be connected? I need to learn more about roasting but have to make enough money from this channel to justify buying a roaster like the Aillio.
@beanobsessedroasters9073
@beanobsessedroasters9073 3 жыл бұрын
@@homecafecharlie - yes they are in a sense that the ET (environmental temp) will give you an idea where the roast will go - but doesn't actually tell whether you the bean is crashing or flicking or what the final drop temp is (crucial imo). It's those nuances that elevate a roast from the mass produced products one buys in the supermarket. The Aillio is an interesting roaster with it's induction heating - but without it's challenges either - induction heating doesn't really heat the air as in conventional gas roasters - so heating is more conduction based.

@@beanobsessedroasters9073 super useful information. Thanks for the comment. I want to get more into roasting but the entry bar is very high. Having this roaster is a great start that gets me and home espresso people interested. Next step for sure is working with a local roaster to understand more.
