The US Air Force is looking to develop a drone stealth bomber that could complement capabilities offered by America’s forthcoming B-21 Raider. This drone wingman is expected to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 million per aircraft, and could offer the US a big advantage in a near-peer fight.

One way to confuse the enemy's air defence systems in a highly contested air space is to deploy multiple small, inexpensive drones so that they mimic a fleet of fighter jets (by artificially increasing their radar cross-section). Once the enemy air defence systems are depleted with the missiles, then the actual bombers and fighter jets can enter the enemy's air space and complete their mission.

That is what the US did during the air Campaign of Desert Storm, drone decoys were launched on mass to confuse Baghdad's Air Defenses and cause them to waste ammo in advance of the attacking forces.

I still can't get over the fact that the US Navy decided to ditch the X-47B UCAV for Boeing's MQ-25 Stingray tanker drone. X-47B was a broadband stealthy strike drone that made the first successful autonomous take off, refueling and landing on an aircraft carrier.

Another terrific video. Thanks Alex! I wonder, why couldn't we have a "loyal wingman" for bombers? A "loyal escort" instead who's job is to defeat any missiles approaching the bomber. And yes, please do a video of Russia's failings when it comes to tactical doctrine on the battlefield.

Ive often wondered about that 'loyal escort' concept, as you call it (great name btw!). As far as the tactical failings - that is probably a question that won't be answered definitively for years. We _know_ that the Russian armed forces are capable of performing at _such_ a higher level than we have seen in Ukraine. They demonstrated that in Syria, if admittedly at a small scale. Until we have a peek behind the Rusty Curtain, we likely won't know exactly what went wrong for them to un-learn it all so spectacularly.

I think the issue is the wingmen for bombers: Cheap, expendable and would give away the location of the B21. Or expensive/nonexpendable/steathy. Plus you dont want to give away your beat stealth tech by having something willingly shot down.
@defective6811
@defective6811 2 жыл бұрын
I dont want to speak for OP, but when I envision a flying-wing 'loyal escort' I envision a platform on par with the low observability of the Raider or Spirit, but which includes counter-offensive capabilities such as the ability to engage air assets which may be attempting to track the bomber, or clear an escape route should the bombers mission become compromised. I essentially think of it as a system which is not designed to be attritable, but which is able to sacrifice itself _if need be_ to protect the bomber. The platform could even still have air to ground capabilities such as SEAD, but its role would be to complement the capabilities of the bomber while ensuring its safety. But I am NOT a weapons designer lol.

GREAT video! Perhaps in this context "attritable" includes "available for one-way missions", thereby roughly doubling the range at which targets can be struck without warning in an emergency, without the cost of developing and manufacturing a twice-the-range manned bomber. Worthwhile economies of scale might accrue from this aircraft being a B-21 derivative rather than a new airframe.

Stealth has shown to be the most survivable and again that it is the best option for planes to survive in contested airspace. This is merely the first step. The next step is bombers that are completely autonomous, and then fighters. In fact, the day of human fighter and bomber pilots is quickly coming to an end. Uncrewed systems will steer (and evade) faster at higher "G's" than crewed systems can, since the pilots' physical bodies limit combat systems. They are also smaller for the same level of capability, and if necessary, can be intentionally expended without losing a highly trained person.

The reason the west doesn't have hypersonic weapons is the same reason we aren't doing rail guns.. The projectile moves so fast and becomes so hot.. That electronic guidance isn't reliable. We tried it in the 90's and 2000's and still can't solve this issue. Neither can the Chinese or Russians. Those weapons are very likely to be very, very unreliable.. If they work at all.
@darkprometheus
@darkprometheus 2 жыл бұрын
The issue wasn't that we couldn't figure it out but rather it was pointless to do it cause the US was so far ahead. Imagine this, during the 1990s, Russia was still trying to reconstitute their military aircraft production outside of Ukraine and China's military was set up like they were going to first a second Korean War. For railguns, the issue was never about the projectile issues, those are easily solvable with pure hardened munitions like tungsten. The issues with the rail gun program is that they tried to merge conventional wisdom with gun power wisdom i.e. the barrel is designed like you are firing a gunpower based munitions which was never designed to handle the expanded energy from an electromagnetically propelled object. This issue actually reduced the range of what they had hoped for and then mix this with the fact that firing this weapon on a ship, it took numerous refits just to get the needed electricity and then had to severely reinforce the frame of the ship in order for the gun's recoil energy wouldn't tear the frame apart. The only ships capable of using this gun are the Zumwalt class ships and the navy has already abandoned making anymore of them in favor of the fact that laser weapons electricity requirements allow them to be deployed on existing ships with minimal changes to ship designs. Hypersonic weapons could have easily been made in the 1990s or 2000s however critics won out saying they contribute little to US military capabilities, unnecessary compared to existing deterrence assets, and lack a defined mission requirement. China and Russia see hypersonics as a way to deal with US carrier assets first and foremost.

They could try to make a short take off and landing bomber in order to be able to use it from bases close to China. For that it could use 2 of the next gen variable engines that will be used on the F-35B. It couldn't land vertically obviously because it would be too heavy but it could land in short roll landing. With variable cycle engines it would have good subsonic range, and could even go supersonic, even if acceleration would be much worse than on a fighter.

A very large ship like the Ford has at least a chance to defend itself by its massive source of energy and resources to support a variety of weapons.

Alex, another great video. This prompted me to wonder about something probably more related to the NGAD Loyal Wingman program. Outside of the obvious advantage of an unmanned drone removing the risk of losing a pilot, do you know if the lack of a human pilot will include new flying tactics? Since aircraft are already being used that have capabilities beyond that which a human pilot can reasonably be expected to endure, could a wingman drone perform maneuvers exceeding what a piloted craft could do? Since these wingman drones will be semi-autonomous, are flight tactics being explored which will take full advantage of not having a human inside? I'm mainly considering G-forces but not being a pilot, I don't know if there might be other operations a pilotless drone could accomplish. Would love to see a video exploring the envisioned tactics of this new air combat technology.

The stealth bombers are obviously used conventionally, but their main purpose is nuclear. Bombers still serve a niche role in nuclear conflict, mostly bunker busting. And non-stealth bombers just won't be able to get there reliably. So alas, we need to invest in a technology we'll probably never use. Remember, contrary to what Russia claims, the US and NATO have no interest in a preemptive strike against Russia without thinking they're planning an attack. So this is mostly about being able to deter them, or any others, from thinking they can get away with a first strike without total annihilation in return.

i was a senior gunner on the vulcan i am a trained aircraft viewer in the 90's i saw fly over was a strange air craft it made doughnuts like on a rope contrail i saw it fly over it was white then it just disappeared it flew so fast. i believed it was unmanned a high flying extremely fast craft was seen at night in the area we also had the night wing flying here in Hudson valley in the early 80's i think unmanned warfare will be the future on land sea and in the air using AI

Loving the loyal wingman and Ai coverage here Alex! Please consider a deep dive into mesh networked drones and human Ai teams in the total load out of first strike missions in the case of overwhelming A2AD. What would a air wing look like and how would support from Cyber/Jammer and MEU play into the chaff in the early days of a Pacific conflict? Most others have not covered scenarios where Taiwan and Okinawa loft more than F16s and F35s. If we saw the Chinese fleet moving from a training exercise one day to The Invasion Day , I’m assuming a scenario with some early strikes on mainland China with attrition able unmanned carrier based systems.

I really think a stealth drone bomber should be replacing the B-21 in a mission, not fly with it. imo if the B-21 has any kind of drones to fly with it then those drones should be fighter cover or wild weasels in order to keep the B-21 alive. The B-21 is just way too expensive to risk losing, and may be too expensive to even risk using at all in a near peer engagement-- stealth does not make them invisible, and they are way too slow to evade anything that comes up to challenge them.

A problem with drones, even military grade is that sometimes the connection to the operator is lost. Most the the time it's required before crashing, but USA lost lots of drones in the middle due to crashing after signal was lost. Can't risk that with a drone that would have to be able to carry nukes.

My arguement is that China is deeply influenced by Russia doctrine and tactic. So are they REALLY peers or just another false flag? Their military also has basically zero combat expierence as well and a deeply corrupt system.

As a Missourian who has attended the Whiteman airshow…the fact it is in the middle of nowhere tells you just how special it is…but it is also now 40ish years old. The B-21 is the newer but not as forward tech facing as the actual cutting edge B-2 larger idea replacement…aka that thing that Art Bell saw but couldn’t quite imagine how it works as it does back when he knew B-2s were real but hard to quantify over the Nevada desert.

The b-21 raider is supposed to cost somewhere around $120 million that would make the drone approximately $60 million but even if it is $600 million its still a billion dollars cheaper than the b-2 bomber making a drone approximately $300 million. Although either way it means that they can be fielded in relatively larger numbers we can still buy hundreds of those.

Ever hear of in flight refueling? Carrier based planes don’t need to have the range of long range ballistic missiles, because unlike missiles they can be refueled in flight.

How do you refuel a package of .....say....140 Planes ? How many tankers would you need ? Are those tankers in danger of being shot down?
@matthewhuszarik4173
@matthewhuszarik4173 2 жыл бұрын
@@junkookbts1273 Depends on what tankers you are using. With the KC-130 you can refuel up to three at a time from one tanker. Each tanker can carry 83,000 lbs of fuel. The USAF currently operates >450 air tankers. The Navy, Marine Corp, National Guard, and Coast Guard have hundreds more. So a 140 plane fight wouldn’t be any trouble.

Well Alex, as I mentioned in another chapter in Sandbox News it has been proven Tailless vertical stabilizers unneeded ,having been as of some 1-2 years ago, discussed in a recent article I read. The Article showed the 1/12 scaled sized model without vertical stabilizers and discussed the planes extreme maneuverability. There were also images of it flying over the desert somewhere.

Reality is stranger than fiction at times. I most definitely believe that we will live to see that become reality in less than 2 decades and wouldn't be surprised if it was implemented within a decade or less. oversight and collaboration. Just cause something is released does it mean that our enemies actually know how it functions. Perfect example of this was the space shuttle program. NASA released every single document that existed which created confusion among soviet scientists on what the space shuttle framework and capabilities actually were. And when i say they released everything, they literally released everything including parts that they considered and tested. They just never said what their final actual design was or included any information that indicated something was a failure or not giving the sense that every concept was feasible and workable. When the Russians tried to do it they couldn't figure it out cause it meant they had to test all of these capabilities and parts themselves even though they had the plans for it all lol.
