Ever wondered why Redd managed to carry a tune so well? Turns out, per his biography, that he used to be in a singing group back in his young days. Imagine that!!!!

I liked this tune from when I first heard it on this show in the 1970s. I've heard a number of other versions since, and this one remains my favorite.

I actually saw Charlie Byrd sing this at Blues Alley in DC shortly before he passed away. I was like I know this one from Sanford and Son. (In my head of course)

I feel the same way whenever I see this performance. Even inside of a scripted show, the authenticity and sincerity is on full display. RIP John Elroy Sanford aka "Chicago" Redd Foxx and Timothy Louis Ancrum aka Timmie "Smiley" Rogers..tis thank you!

Timmie "Oh Yeah!" Rogers should be remembered for being one of the first Black comedians to dress in formalwear and without blackface when he performed. Also, Redd Foxx makes an unwitting cameo in a famous book. Since he was a train porter at one time, he was remembered by a fellow porter, Malcom Little in the Autobiography of Malcolm X.

African American comedians had to be so talented in different areas to make it. Fred actually honed his comedy skills before 'Television,' doing vaudeville for a number of years. The performers there were often singing, dancing, and doing comedy. If you couldn't do all of them, then no job. I'm so proud of Redd for featuring these guys who refused to compromise to racism.
