Sandi, I can’t express my gratitude for your videos and your art. I’m currently navigating a family illness as a caregiver, so I’ve been watching your entire back catalogue of videos as my “me time” to stay sane. You are incredible and you bring such joy to all of us lucky enough to subscribe to your channel. Thank you for being you!

I was just journaling and watching one of your past videos and realizing that your "bits of an Artist Life" are CHUNKS of art, life and lessons that are treasures beyond measure for me! Thank you for providing all the inspiration you do every two weeks that carry me a bit further in my journey in art and life. I want you to know just how much your videos inspire me each and every ONE of them, and I appreciate every bit of your Artist's Life that you are gracious and kind enough to share with us! Thank you from the bottom of my heart and I look forward with baited breath to your next "bit"! Many blessings to you and your family.

Thank you for the lovely video. Congratulations on the boutique where your beautiful paintings live. I really enjoyed the uplifting trip. It makes my days a little more happier. I am dealing with the news of my sister with stage 4 lung cancer. Never smoked a day in her life. The doctor gives her 1 to 2 years to live. But we do serve a most powerful God. We are praying that she stays with us so much longer. We are all fighters and prayer warriors.❤ God Bless You Sandi! 🙏🙏🙏

I'm sorry about your sister; I wanted to share info regarding knowing about hidden toxic mold in the home. It's oxalic acid or oxalates which is also in food, so lowering it in diet can help! Have hope and seek interviews on YT from Sally K. Norton, or read her book, Toxic Superfoods. I'm living in high aspergillus and it's doing a number on my liver's ability to detox (kinda genetic, too); but taking out sugars and fats has helped (lost gallbladder - long story). It's technical and there are rabbit holes, but I share bc it might help if she's open to it.

@@madelynsmith8281 Re second-hand smoke, so did I; which I think was a burden on children and those around smokers > smoke and pollution of any kind has .... you guessed it oxalate (promotes heart disease). Lowering ox in the diet SLOWLY has been helping. Best wishes. #liverdetox #carnivorediet

💡The Uni Ball Eye pen also comes in broad (1mm). You can wash the ink of the Uni Ball Eye if you're quick, after that it's waterproof and you can work over them with water color. I can't imagine life without them anymore. Staedtler has markers out with lightfast pigmented ink, they call it Multi Ink. No ghosting, no bleeding. You can layer them and blend them and they dry waterproof. They come in several shades of grey and black and 4 different nibs. And the pens have a normal length. I solved exactly the same problem you had with these markers. So if your Koi Pens run out, you might want to try the Staedtler Pigmented Art pens.

Sandi, once again your video has been inspiring and informative. At one time I was a serious pastellist but like you, I could no longer tolerate the dust so hearing about the Pastel Mat paper is good news! Right now, I am trying to establish a sketchbook practice to get me back in the studio after many years as a caregiver. At that time, all I could manage to do were junk journals which were helpful. I feel my “creative clock” ticking away but I am holding on to my hope & faith that it will happen. Love your channel!

I’ve gone through a similar purse pen journey, and the one I have now is Tombow Fudenosuke brush pen, double sided - one side is black and the other gray. The nib is a little small but for on the go it works pretty well! (I got it on Jet Pens.) I also sometimes just do two fountain pens or refillable brush pens, one with black ink and one with gray ink - but then I have to remember to refill them! 😂

Thank you for sharing your experience with Pastelmat, I'm still a beginner in soft pastels, just have started to to play with them, and the surface seems to make a big difference in experience in using them.

Sandi, I would love to see a painting of the hawk/falcon ( think that's what it was??) with the mama bunny trying to save her baby...Idk but I love nature, Nature is cruel, but its the natural way of life for the wild. And only us humans find it gruesome because it's not natural to us. You can always bring down the gruesome part of the bleeding baby...IDK...I was just thinking that. 😉

Pastelmat is my favorite paper. It can take a lot of layers of soft pastel and different wet media... alcohol inks, acrylics, watercolor, and nupastels with alcohol wash... which I use in my underpaintings. You are welcomed to come to my studio to see all the different ways I use Pastelmat. (I live in Nashville.) I have all the colors and art supplies to experiment with, and a lot of finished paintings on Pastelmat. Do note that there is a manufacturing defect that frequently pops up on Pastelmat... parallel grooved lines running through it. They can be easily covered up with soft pastels, or used as an effect in a painting. Your videos are always inspirational.

20+ years ago an artist did my 'Pinda Pie' portrait. It looks very similar to the painting on the opener. He was from Arkansas, I believe, and was/is an outsider artist. Love his work. Do you consider yourself an outsider artist too?

I love seeing your pastel work from the Botanical Gardens. If you’d like to try another idea for your purse pens, you may enjoy using a simple fountain pen with a non-permanent ink ( Parker Quink is a nice black, or Diamine Ancient Copper is lovely for a bit of neutral color or any color of the rainbow will shift nicely.) Then just carry a water brush to touch your ink and spread for different values. I love doing faces this way. I highly recommend Goulet Pens for fountain pens and inks. Cheers!

i actually like the giant, monumental bunny facing the edge of the paper in the pastelmat pad. it's a less obvious composition which i think makes the whole drawing more compelling, even a little mysterious.... of course the drawing with the bunny facing the other way is really great too. :) also, the small portrait you did on a piece of sample pastelmat (you showed it in the very beginning) is stunning.

Sandi, have you ever tried Pan Pastels? They are great--very little dust! They come in little pans and are applied with what are called Soft tools - kind of like little sponges and they work beautifully with Pastelmat.

What a great video! Really a visual feast, from the scenery to the artwork. Thank you. I see you have adopted the British pronunciation of “pastel.” 😀 I admit I find myself doing the same thing… so many international influences these days.

@@sandihester 😂😂😂 It wasn’t until I watched the video again that I realized you did pronounce it the American way in the inserted footage. You might just be one of those people who easily unconsciously adopt other people’s pronunciations. Honestly even though I am American I say the British pronunciation in my head and have to consciously pronounce it the “normal” way when talking out loud. I think the British way actually rolls off the tongue better.

Pastelmat is textured with cellulose and is not a sanded paper. Clairfontaine, which makes Pastelmat, does also make something called PaintOn, which is a less expensive mixed media paper. I haven’t tried it but it is marketed as being able to take pastel. Canson makes Mi-Teintes and also XL “Sand Grain,” both of which are just textured (not sanded) papers, which work well but don’t take anywhere near the number of layers that more expensive papers do. Probably the most economical option is to prime paper for use with pastels. Both Clairfontaine and Art Spectrum (maker of Colourfix pastel paper) sell primers. Golden makes a pastel ground. I like to use Liquitex clear gesso, although I think it is better with oil pastels (GREAT for that purpose) than for “chalk” pastels.
