I play through act2 of Sandopolis in permanent darkness (without using the light switch once) whilst fending off the relentless assault of the ghosts! I didn't lose any rings!

In all these years I never knew the fire shield worked against the ghosts

I don't think the shield automatically protects you from the ghosts. If you watch carefully, you'll notice he's always priming his speed or in ball form whenever he makes contact with the ghosts like you would for any enemy.

Still disappointed that I never figured that out. I remember as a kid I hated having the lights go out because those things were annoying as hell

I never knew all this time going into spin dash or into a ball would kill those devil ghosts. Has I known that back THEN...haha!

@0:28 one time I actually managed to jump and avoid striking the capsule and then finished the level ghost-free.
