You must have had your Copics before the company changed hands because now the sketch marker caps are cracking and making the marker dry out faster. I’ve had to replace 18 markers so far, but thanks to your hex chart design, I am able to use other colours close to them since I have the full set. Now if they sold empty Ciao markers, I’d buy them and refill inks of all the Sketch markers I have and fill those, since I don’t have the same issues with them. I have a few sketchmarkers and just invested in a few OLO, but I still go back to my Ohuhu or Arteza when I colouring or even sketching. Thanks for the comparison and keep creating! 💛💙💜

I hear that from a few people, but not nearly as many as would make me think its a problem at Copic. Are you checking your markers right when you get them? If you receive them with problems send them back right away. The few I hear say that are telling me it's not happening til months to a year later which indicates a user problem if they didn't have an issue til later on.

Oh wow! When was Copic sold? I didn't know that they were no longer owned by .TOO, unless you're saying that .TOO itself was bought out. I hadn't heard anything about it, so I nearly fell over when I read your comment. I know Sketchmarker had a couple of distribution changes, but that's understandable considering their situation. I've never had a problem with the caps cracking on any of my Copic markers (old or new). I received dry markers once, but that was when I got a set off of Amazon instead of my normal go-to, Dick Blick.

Copic wasn’t sold. The company had been run, as I understand, by Too, but the children of the Copic family decided (?) to take control back. Shortly after they wanted to raise prices, get things back to more profitability (I don’t know the inner workings so sometimes this can be good news and other times greedy news). The Too leadership had held steady on price for SO many years I can only think it was a decent if painful business decision to change management as well as raise prices, even if it meant we all pay more. The thing I miss most is having a US distributor-they were helpful rather than now trying to deal direct with Copic in Japan.

@@SandyAllnock1 Oh! I had no idea all of that went down! I agree on the inner workings. They tend to keep things close to the vest for the most part. That price has been maintained for a very long time. So, I can't hate on them if they decided to finally raise it. Thanks so much for the info. I'm usually late on just about everything.

I think the ink on the Copics is more viscous or something and it makes it more controllable. Of course the nibs are really great. But I have problems with the caps too, and the bodies definitely have some worrisome imperfections at times. I think people hate to complain about their Copics because they spent so much, but I do think the build quality problem reports have been growing. I like mine, and will use them, but I certainly am fine with my Ohuhu also. Of course, if I got full sets of Copics for free, I'd be thrilled, ha. Are you listening .TOO ;-).

I so appreciate the time you took to do these comparisons. One thing I did not hear you mention - are Sketchmarkers and Olo refillable? That was one of the first things that attracted me to Copics. Also that the nibs could be replaced. Now it's definitely "play time" for you! Go enjoy just making something for fun! TFS

Thanks, Sandy. Very informative video. Appreciate all the time and effort you put in to make it. Got your Human Rainbow II class yesterday, and just from the first lesson, have already learned a bunch. I SO appreciate your honest approach to art supplies. After reading/hearing so many card bloggers’ comments about “loving” their OLO markers with nothing else to back it up, I was feeling like they were only trying to make money. I have a few, and don’t love them…but will continue trying to incorporate them into my Copics, which I do love. Stay awesome!

@@patti3d doubtful. Alcohol ink shouldn’t pool up in markers like other inks.

This was a very fascinating video! I was very surprised when you mentioned that you've only had issues with 2 copic markers. For some reason when I refill some of my markers, sometimes the tips remain dry as if there is a blockage of some kind. Do you have any tips on how to solve this problem when it happens? Thank you!

It was hard, but they hadn’t raised prices in a decade. Nobody can sustain that. They’d have been better off with smaller increases over all that time.

I commented once on one of your videos about a specific Copic marker that had dried out for you, and mine had also dried out, which led me to speculate that perhaps there was some sort of issue with that particular marker/color. I believe the color was called Orientale or Toast (E31 or 34)? Anyway, I found a video regarding why your Copic markers dry out. (I'm always very careful to make sure all caps are back on tightly.) In the video, the gentleman stated that the caps develop cracks in them that we can't really see but can test for in a bowl of water. I was wondering if you've ever had any issues with this? I replaced the nib and refilled that marker only to have it dry out again just a short time afterwards. Also, this led me to wonder if Copic would ever make replacement caps. Do you have any insight on this?

I haven’t tried that but can imagine a water test could expose a crack. Give it a try?

I don’t know why, but KZfaq is not giving notifications when you post videos anymore. This has been happening for awhile. I even turned off notifications and turned them back in. Still no notifications. I don’t know if others are having this problem or if it is just me.

Strange, but it’s likely a lot of folks are having that problem. Be sure you click on “all” rather than “personalized”-I find YT has no idea how to personalize anything 😜

I purchased 100@ copics sketch in 2000 and stored on side. A couple years later I went to swatch them on new swatch card and 22 of them had completely dried out nibs both sides. I have never used them and wondered why. The caps to those do feel looser and I do not want to purchase refill ink and have them just dry out. In 2018 I purchased most of the spectrum noir and none of those have dried out. Have you heard of copics having issues during that time with drying out? Thanks

I bought the 200ml bottle of the colorless blender solution for markers that have dried out, where the ink wasn't used up, just dried out from sitting. I took out the chisel nibs, added drops of solution until it started dripping out a bit on the brush side, reinstalled the chisel nibs, rehydrated them with blending solution and let things sit overnight. If this didn't fully hydrate the pens, I added a few more drops. Seemed to work all right.
