Fred (Redd Foxx) and Lamont (Demond Wilson) receive a visit from Fred's sister-in-law Ethel (Beah Richards), but she may not be as welcome as she thinks.
From Season 2, Episode 1 'The Light Housekeeper' - When Fred Sanford receives a slight injury in a car mishap, Lamont finds himself waiting on his father hand and foot. Fred rejects the idea of having Aunt Ethel (Beah Richards) help him around the house and settles for Lamont's zany plan to hire a housekeeper. But when she arrives, Fred is aghast to learn she is white... and lazy. Mary Wickes guest stars as the housekeeper.

ABOUT SANFORD AND SON: The highest-rated half-hour series in NBC history at the time, Sanford and Son stars Redd Foxx as the cantankerous sexagenarian Fred Sanford and Demond Wilson as his son Lamont, also his business partner in the family junk-dealing business. Nothing beats Aunt Esther, but I still like her. She’s like a cooler headed version. You can imagine Ethel being a hybrid of Esther and Elizabeth. Definitely believable as another sibling.

It's too bad they didn't keep the character of Aunt Ethel. She was only in two episodes. It would have been pure comedic gold to have Ethel and Esther both team up on Fred once in awhile. Can you imagine the fights!

Ya know -- as much as Aunt Esther helped MAKE the show, Aunt Ethel was _no one_ to be messed with. Her best line *ever* was ~2:12: "If you weren't a cripple I'd MAKE you one!" LOLOL!! (I know *I* would never mess with "Aunt Ethel"!!) :-)

Sanford and Son was the greatest half hour on television. I was in high school when it came on air. Redd Foxx and Lawndale Page battles made the show. That was when comedy was truly great and television as a whole was truly great. Sanford and son is timeless, I still love it today as I loved it when it first came on the air. There are some programs that you grew up watching but cannot watch it consistently now. Fred,Lamont,Esther, Grady, Bubba,Rollo, Donna,and the rest I f the gang really made watching television a pleasure. It's the first time that I seen and heard the "N" word spoken without repercussions. That episode at the court was one of the funniest episode that I've seen.

It just goes to show how fickle Hollywood can be. Sandford and Son was a hit show but this was a small part for Beah Richards especially being that a few years before this she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing Sidney Poitier's Mother in "Guess who's coming to dinner".

Beah Richards was supposed to be a foil for Fred, but her demeanor was too nice, so at Redd's advice, Lawanda Page was given a shot, as Redd knew her from the nightclub circuit. She was hired and Aunt Ethel became Aunt Esther. And we know the rest.

Trust me folks. This segment includes 'outtakes' not included on the original broadcasts from the 1970's. I both know that as a fact, and I have tapes of ALL episodes to prove it (not that it matters a hill of beans here). That aside, Redd Foxx is so f'n f'unny!
