One of the issues that has plagued Africa is that of kleptocrats who enrich themselves at the expense of their country’s development. From Mobutu in Zaire, to Omar Bongo in Gabon, this has proved to be an issue time and time again and today’s subject of this video, General Sani Abacha of Nigeria is no different.
According to the estimates cited by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Nigeria lost $400 billion to corruption between 1960 and 1999. Some of that can be traced back to the rule of the dictator General Sani Abacha, whom the Nigerian government, accused of looting more than $2.2 billion from state coffers when he ruled the country from 1993 until his death, apparently from a heart attack, in June 1998.
Corruption watchdog, Transparency International estimates he stole as much as $5bn of public money during that time.
Upon Abacha's death, his successor in office, General Abubakar, commissioned a probe into allegations of corruption levelled against Abacha. These investigations confirmed that Abacha and a handful of collaborators had diverted billions of US dollars in public funds into several local and overseas accounts and properties.
In this video we look at the life of General Sani Abacha and how he managed to swindle such large amounts of money from the country of Nigeria.

In turn, he Mobutu Sese Seko Kuku Ngbendu Wa Za Banga embezzled a total of 9 billion US dollars which he had in secret bank accounts in Switzerland, France and Belgium : A wealth he never even enjoyed after his overthrow because all European countries(his former friends and allies) refused to grant him visas to Europe. This caused him to develop heart attack and high blood pressure that killed him. He deserved it because his corruption led to the death of many innocent Congolese children, women and men from treatable diseases as there were no proper hospitals and medicine and food.

I've heard recent stories about human organ harvesting/trafficking cases in Nigeria, that can sometimes even involve high-ranking officials. This sounds terrifying, and I know it happens in a lot of countries, not just Nigeria, as regions worldwide go through economic difficulties and seek out new ways to make money. Do you think these huge financial thefts by politicians like Sani Abacha have had a direct impact on the organ harvesting problem in Nigeria specifically, by causing financial difficulty for residents? How long has the trade been going on there, and do you know if the current president is taking actions to fight against the problem? Thanks, and thank you for these informative videos.

Today, in 2024, we have the Sani Abacha of Ethiopia in PM Abiy Ahmed. In addition to the sadistic way in Tigray, he is essentially selling the country’s infrastructure and industry such as The Railways, the Telecom, Airlines, factories of all kinds across the nation. Buying big guns at the cost of the nation and sell them to Sudan and Somalia opposition parties. Now he and his hooligan friends are being called as the “Dollar Tirasu!”, English meaning their pillows are literally Dollars 💵! They make big decisions with a new law and flip it back when it’s sweet to them. The nation is literally getting into the ditch by man-made problems.

So many errors in this video. 1. It was not Babangida that overthrew Shagari, he was just one of the conspirators. 2. Abacha was never second-in-command to Babangida. Babangida's first deputy was Ebitu Ukiwe, who was later replaced by Augustus Aikhomu. 3. General Yar'adua was arrested (and later murdered) by Abacha in 1995 together with General Obasanjo, not in 1997. 4. General Oladipo Diya (Abacha's second-in-command) was arrested in 1997, not in 1995.
