Great video as always. Oh, and the MDR 7506 actually HAVE changed the packaging. They come in a white box. If anyone goes to Guitar Center (my job, lol) ask for the new box if you want. We’re still putting the old ones out first until they’re gone 😂

I've been using Sony MDR-7506 headphones for years and years -- I own three pair (but can only find two for some reason). They seem to be a studio standard in these parts, too -- almost every control room I walk into in the area seem to have them. Build quality and sound seem to be really consistent over the decades. And, they're fairly comfortable -- I can use them for hours and hours on end without fatigue. I have had to replace the ear cups, but they lasted about 10 years before having to do it.

I owned the Shure 440s for a few years, until they got smashed by a rogue personal sound mixer on stage, and now I own the HD280 Pros. Both are great options! To me, the 280s have a little more warmth, and as mentioned are INCREDIBLE for sound isolation. I do miss my 440s though. I loved how balanced everything felt within them- as someone who plays three instruments that was really special for me! Thanks for all your hard work - you're great!

I'm headed into freelance voiceover work soon and looking to upgrade from my current open back studio headphones to a closed back pair for monitoring and editing. I have had the AKG K52 headphones for almost 3 years now and have been blown away. The sound quality is excellent with a wide soundstage and flat frequency response and the build quality is decent. they are fairly lightweight but they are super durable. I recently got some Beyerdynamic DT 900 PRO X headphones and I can confidently say that the AKG's sound quality and comfort (although they do have a very different 'feel' on your head) are on par. Definitely recommend for $30.

I use a pair of the Sennheisers at church to mix the audio for the live stream during services. The tight seal and high isolation is crucial to filter out what's going on in the auditorium vs. what's going out over the stream. Oh, and I found a pair of the Sony 7506 in the throwaway pile at work. $15 for new ear cushions from Amazon and they're good to go. I normally use the Sony MDR V150 (the headphone everyone loves to hate) at home and at work, mostly BECAUSE of the low isolation. I like to be able to hear what's going on in the room around me. The ones I really miss are a set of old Koss Pro4AA.

I own a K240 and the only things i want to mention, is that they do last long even if it feels a bit cheap (5 years ---> Little crack on the leather parts and cable tearing up a bit) and the lack of bass (Probably the soundwaves escape due to bad insolation). I'd recommend something else for bass music producers, but mixing feels really good with it.

I use the AKG K371 and they’re incredible for tracking and mixing, especially for the price. They can be found open box or refurbished for around $100. They sound very different from the lower end models and even let you hear very low bass frequencies, but not in an overpowering way. I don't use headphones to mix, usually, relying on studio monitors instead. But I do like to check mastering in a variety of places and for headphones that meant my Sony MDR-1AM2 headphones that I use for recreational listening. But aware they have a slightly unusual frequency response (and it's annoying to go fetch them) I've just purchased an AT-30x for this purpose. It's just... I haven't used them yet! :-D I did reject the AT-50x headphones a few years ago for recreational listening (I didn't like the bass response). But mixing and mastering is a different endeavour.,

I own both AKG240 and Shure headphones. If youre into vocal recording AKG240 is way better. They never bleed out in my setup. Semi open design allow to hear yourself better when performing, giving your flow the tightness it needs. Its true they dont have a lot of bass but one could argue that none of these headphones can mix bass properly anyway. Shure headphones is a no go if you move a lot when recording vocals as their components make a lot of "skweek skweek" sounds, so much that one can barely hear himself singing. Its true Shure headphones sound good, so good that it actually hides off a lot of flaws in your mix and that makes polishing your mix impossible. Shure headphones is better when DJing as you want to protect your ears from undesired noise when performing live all night long.

I know this probably sounds crazy but I use the stock apple corded earbuds that comes in the box when you buy an iPhone. I’ve used them for recording my music over the past few years and I’ve tired using other headphones but I don’t know if I’m just use to the apples or what but nothing seemed to take their place. For recording in my opinion they just seem to give you that correct sound so when I record something and then take the song to the car like we all do and see how it sounds I find I need to make less corrections with the apples then other headphones idk that’s just my opinion, I also use an M-audio interface and an akg condenser Mic which I think akg makes an insanely good microphone for beginners and even for professional use. My 2 cents

MDR-V6 I had one that died and purchased another set. Can't be beat at the price, Yes 7506 they didn't change the packaging but who cars unlike the other brand which cheap out on the headphones, You only see the package once the headphone quality for as long as they last. I can live with an old package.

I have the Shure. I know headphones are important, but at the price point I am completely satisfied with the quality. I also use them for DJing and they’ve held up better than more expensive products I’ve used in the past. DJing can wreck headphones even when a DJ is purposefully careful. Fortunately these are perfect for all my uses in monitoring and tracking in the home studio. As for DJing in the modern world, preparing all your tracks with loops and cues limits the need for most headphone monitoring even with DVS. I don’t really miss back-cueing records with one cup over an ear!

Just bought the MDR 7506 a couple days ago. Wish I saw this first! I wanted something for mixing, so I might be able to adjust to these I'm a bit, but now I know they're not great for mixing. Oh well! I think the bass is a little lacking on them, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Thanks for the info! By the way, which of these would you say it's the best for mixing? I don't think you mentioned that in the video.
@SanjayC
@SanjayC Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I didn't really pick one for mixing because none of them really stood out in that regard. However, I will say that the AT, Sennheiser, and Shure headphones will probably do fine once you've "learned" them. I would pick the Shure for my ears.

@@SanjayC would you say the Sony's are worse than those? I'm thinking about returning them now, and maybe going with the Sennheiser.

So if the audio technical 20s are flatter then the 50s wouldn’t that make them better for mixing ?

You kind of touched on it, but the AKGs are good when you're working with someone. Passing the headphones back & forth isn't a problem with how it automatically fits to anyone's head. And you can hear them talking to you since they're semi open back.

What is the best headphones for strictly vocals? For recording vocals and mixing vocals ( over a instrumental of course ) I don’t mind a nice heavy bass but I want to me able to hear the snare very well to keep timing with vocals. Any suggestions within this price range?

Ever heard of Superlux? I own 3 different headphones of them, the hd662f being the overall best in my opinion, hd681evo performing better in the lowend and hd660 pro 150 Ohms being very brilliant in heights and stage but lacking real sub bass. All of them under 50 bucks and a real no-brainer. Some of their mics are also worth having a look at (love the e205). Maybe a brand you could pick up some day. I'm not being paid by or do ad for them, just a user and fanboy by now :)

I don't quite understand why EDM or bass thump production would make one go for headphones that emphasize bass. Would that not lead to a mix that has less bass if you compensate for what you hear?

So I have owned both the Shure 440 and 840. Oddly enough, after awhile both pairs had the left headband adjuster break. I was able to superglue the part back on and still use both, but I found it odd that both pairs had that gradually happen pretty much the same way. (Haven't used the A model though.)
