How to Maintaining and Condition your Dive Watch Seals

Here's a video showing you how to maintain/condistion your dive watch's seals/gaskets using silicone grease. This is something I recommend you do to your dive watches once every year or so. It's also a good idea to condition your seals prior to snorkeling or scuba diving. Particularly in salt water.

Outstanding video... and I've watched a lot of them to learn how to condition my dive watch seals. Thought: with a sharp knife, cut off just a very little bit of one end of the toothpick to better (perhaps) apply grease to seals & seal channels.

By the by there’s a second seal behind the metal washer in watch crown attached to watch. Probably over kill to do it. Excellent information and the seal behind the washer is a pain to do.

I use the same silicone grease I have for my dive equipment it’s USDA food equipment grade grease. I use it on all my seals for my regulator, tank, etc. so I figure it’s good enough for my watch seals.

Hey, great stuff thank you for the informative video. Can you please help with figuring out that just rotating a crown of a 50 m water resistant Seiko 5 at idle position where it has no effect in winding or changing day date/time under a feet of water cause water damage? Would really appreciate your reply!

Danco have 2 types: one is called silicon grease and the other is the one you are using, does it matter which one to use?

Is it important to replace the original crown with a stainless steel one?

Not really in my opinion. It certainly doesn't hurt to do that. But if you keep the original Crown you can prevent electrolysis from forming by using a little bit of silicone grease on the threads

Is this recommended for g shocks with 20bar? I mean i trust nobody in my place for battery replacement. Im afraid that they will not seal it correctly (edit) I dont use it for diving just for pools and sometimes for sea swimming

Yes it should work perfectly for a G-Shock. Just take care when putting the case back on and that the gasket is properly seated.

When under the pressure of many M of water at diving depths, please can you comment on how the bezel operates? One of the complaints I hear is that the bezel easily turns bidirectionally which I don't find a problem as I am no diver. Apparently the bezel is supposed to stiffen up when under water. What say you sir?

How many years does it take for gaskets to dry and crack?

I don't know for sure, but it would definitely be quite a few years. If I were to guess/speculate, I think that most modern gaskets would last well over 5 years without any signs deterioration.

I bought some Seiko silicone grease, it was sticky and had the consistency of a snot rocket. Pretty sure it wasn't supposed to be like that

Vince White I would not advise it. Stick to the 100% silicone grease. You don't want to use petroleum-based greases on your seals if you can manage it

Neal Rogers super lube says, silicone lubricating grease with syncolon (PTFE). They also make a Di Electric silicon. Can't fund Danci here. At a store they have a little tub of plumbers grease. Which would you recommend?

I looking over the material data sheet right now. The PTFE is Teflon.

The main ingredient is Polydimethylsiloxane. Which is silicone.

You don’t put silicon grease on metal parts. Always wear surgical gloves when opening a watch and handling the movement. The oils from your fingers can damage the movement.

uhm... why using the unique Vostok seal/caseback system for this tutorial, while all other brand watches have a screwback watch case. (with those you should use a new seal ring, due to the shearing force - possibly damaging the old seal when you open it. The Vostok system doesn't have that problem, as it doesn't have a screwback case.) Like the video though, but this is important to point out. - maybe better to add "Vostok" to the title of the video?

Vostoks are water resistant but not dive watches.

Seriously dude, where do you live?? If you really like watches and know about them, you should know that the deeper a Vostok Amphibia goes, the more water resistant it becomes. That's an impressive performance of an actual DIVER watch.

The Scuba Dude and some of the Komandirskie models are rated to 200M, which is obviously dependent on the seals being in good shape. I have the same grease which I bought for maintenance on bathroom faucets, and it is a bit sticky. The think that there is better silicon grease (thinner) which can be obtained specifically for these rubber seals. In regards to being or not being a dive watch, how else to you get to 200M but to your point the only detail if you interested in a good dive watch is that the bezel is bi-directional and doesn't have a ratchet.
