The Sansui TU-9900 is an outstanding tuner. This was part of Sansui's Professional Series that included the AU-20000, AU-11000 and AU-9900.

As far as tuners go, this one does set itself apart in the looks area with great specs to back up the looks.

I very much like old fm tuners and I have had the Luxman T12 with an additional signal meter and high class directional 8 elements Fuba antenna, which I could turn to a desired direction for better reception.

You setup a nice external antenna which helps greatly. There is still good programming out there to be found, but longer term, it will all sadly move to streaming.

@@stereoniche lest we forget Yogi's pov (maybe Yagi too); "it's tough to make predictions, especially about the future." another quote, perhaps not so famous; "licensed RF bandwidth is the beachfront property of the future." {perhaps "mountaintop view" is better put in our times} one might be consider the potential of creative engineers & biz-types to evolve long-standing products (& content) in a crowded, valuable mkt that enjoys gov license.

Oh Yes! This tuner would go well with my Sansui AU-6900 int. Amp. CUrrently using a Sansui 331 Receiver as the tuner only plugged into the AU-6900. Even the modest 331 can out-perform any modern tuner. Cheers from sunny Australia!

in the multipath setting, one can read the amount of multipath interference w/ each station as an aid in adjusting the antenna pattern (physically) to minimize associated interference. I have found all healthy Sansui tuners (I have a few old ones, from TU217 to TU-X1) to deliver great value for the $ on the used market... for those so inclined.
@stereoniche
@stereoniche 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for that explanation! I think tuners will continue to be a great value ongoing. Do you have a TU-9900 as well? If so, how big a difference is there to the X1?

@@stereoniche I believe (great performing / aesthetically appealing) vintage tuners will always have value - just like other niche vintage products. such markets rise & fall, but rarely go away completely, even "for display purposes only". folks have gone nuts about about giant vintage receivers... wait till they experience how a standalone tuner lights up the room. No, I haven't a 9900 or A/Bd them. my conjecture is that they would be hard to distinguish in 98% of cases (but as we all know, it's that last 2% that matters... to enthusiasts & exceptional users). I started w/ a 517 bitd & all the others stumbled into me... I need more Sansui amps & preamps. the X1 seems to have been targeted to radio stations for reference reception & test purposes (has an overkill AM section) as well as to well-heeled audiophiles. AudioKarma has a very active tuner forum - it's next to turntables - that other dead format. btw, Scott - I really enjoyed that march through your backlot... made me feel somewhat normal.

@@grumpy9478 "I really enjoyed that march through your backlot... made me feel somewhat normal." - Well, my primary goal is to make collectors feel normal. I created StereoNiche, in part, because too often on AK I received far too much "attitude" from the "No attitude" crowd about my collection.

In the early 60s I discovered my Grand parents 1936 Silvertone radio. I used to tune in shortwave stations from around the world. Even today I still like to do a little FM "DXing". What a beautiful unit! I would love to have a tuner with an IF band wide narrow switch. If you have stations that are very close together on the FM band, the narrow setting will help keep the adjacent stations from intruding on the station that you are listening to. Your unit has an F style connector for easy connection to an outside antenna. The Sansui X1 might be the greatest tuner ever made but yours is awesome! Great video!

Do you keep a book of the stations you are able to reach? I think these TU-900 are just stunning. It caught my eye way before I ever bought this one. I bought an external antenna years ago and even ran the coax outside my room to connect it, but just never got around to it.

@@stereoniche I have a couple of FM antennas and a large TV antenna. I have a Carver tuner and listened to a station every morning from 90 miles away with a directional FM antenna and a run of RG-6 quad shield cable. That was pre internet of course. LOL Never thought of a book though.

Great video Scott! It's been a while since I replied to any videos.. I have this tuner and it is great. Mine is out for restoration now along with a CA-2000 preamp and BA-5000 Power amp. I also have my fully restored AU-20000 which I also love! I Had an Au-9900, but traded it for a much less powerful, but amazing sounding Au-777 integrated and matching TU-777 tuner. You might have figured out that I like Sansuis! lol

I gave up on tuners a few years back due to the poor radio reception in Vermont and the clear channel takeover playing redundant songs with great compression. Up until the mid 80's, Sansui tuners were nice, but for me took a back seat to Nakamichi st-7, Yamaha t-80 and Onkyo t-9090. even the Carver TX-11a was good. The king kong was Magnum-dynalab.

I used to have one of these tuners-at the time some years ago offered the tuner for sale. No one wanted it-not even an offer. Ended up giving it to Goodwill. There is NOTHING on FM making a tuner like this one worthwhile. Stations just broadcast over processed TRASH! Sounds just as bad as AM. Don’t listen to radio anymore-nothing on. So sad if you have a beautiful,wonderful tuner as this one.

unless i had an amazing FM station local, a tuner just doesn't make sense. what is the scenario where a tuner makes sense in a streaming world?

good FM stations (typically public or University) are curated streams (for you youngsters). they are also a direct, live link to one's local life. stereo FM has a uniquely pleasing "acoustic signature", especially when transmitting a live, well-engineered, real time performance. + some of us are enamored w/ broadcast radio technology of all sorts. one could go on, but I think in audio, it's one of those many "if you don't get it / need it / like it, it don't matter" topics. no big deal.

@@stereoniche Hmmm. it's more about collecting vintage hi-fi components although here in Sydney Australia we have a number of excellent strength/quality classical music stations broadcasting in analogue full-frequency. They sound even better through vintage tuners.

Listening to FM radio is free. FM radio still works if you have an internet outage. I like to listen to it in my shop while I work on vintage audio gear. I am lucky enough to be able to get KUVO 89.3, which is a great Public Radio jazz station in Colorado, over the air. Sure, I could stream it, but where is the fun in that? If you do have one or more good local FM stations, an FM tuner can be a lot of fun to play with and listen to. If you have any good, but not so local FM stations, a high-end FM tuner (along with a good FM antenna) is also fun to play with. Can you tune in that station that is 50-60 miles away with acceptable sound quality? This is called DXing. What happens to the reception and sound quality with the different options available on your tuner? Messing around with the different settings can make a huge difference to the sound quality. This is so much more immediately gratifying than constantly swapping out components and buying new stuff chasing after some tiny improvement that does not make enough of a difference to pass blind A/B testing. BTW, I'm not some Luddite. I have a lot of modern gear, Roon, and I stream with Tidal.
