I'd never been out to Catalina, one of the Channel Islands, and we decided to to spend a couple days out there with my MIL. It's a bit touristy during the day but in the evening and morning between the ferries and cruise ships, it quiets down and is just lovely. The cool air and mist and the incredible light make for a serene walk. I really enjoy the mornings when the cities are waking up too. Avalon is one of two towns on the island but the other one, Two Harbors, only has about 100 people. We start out at the Ferry Dock and walk along the waterfront around the harbor and past the Casino and Theater to the Descanso Beach Club. We pass the Tuna Club and Yacht club and have some wonderful relaxing views. Such a beautiful morning for a walk. I hope you enjoy it too if you walk at home. -H

Hi Henry, that was such fun! I used to live in a house up in the hills in San Pedro back in the early seventies. I could see Catalina from my home, but never made it out there! Thanks for sharing Avalon. Always a treat to return. One Fourth of July we spent the day with family who still live there. Some local streets were closed to traffic and residents and visitors enjoyed occupying with their neighbors as the day ran long and the fireworks held everyone captivate near the bay.

My wife was born in Avalon and her family lived and worked there in the 40's. Last visit to the island, Laurel rode the parachute ride with her granddaughter. And they also tried the ziplines. The top floor is a giant dance floor and in the big band years hosted all the biggest orchestras of the day. We attend ee's d one of the last performances of surf music pioneer, Dick Dale. Check out the web cam of the eagles best near Two Harbors. Three babies presently at the nest. Try a Buffalo Milk cocktail at a local bar. Cheers!

That's awesome, Steve. Thanks for sharing. They have tours of the casino but the timing didn't work for us. I'd love to have been on that top floor back then having cocktails in the evening on that portico. I saw the Buffalo Milk but didn't try one. Next time. I'll do a search for the eagle nest. Those nest cams are really cool. -H

Re: Bison. Many were rounded up at one time and moved to a native American reservation. The Catalina Conservancy also introduced a birth control program.
