Santa Cruz to Roaring Camp on the BT&P Beach Train!

Our latest family adventure found us in Santa Cruz for a weekend to celebrate my daughter's 30th birthday, so we took advantage of the great weather to take the Beach Train from the Boardwalk o Roaring Camp in Felton and back. It was great ride and I was allowed on the locomotive on the boardwalk and the Heisler steamer at Roaring Camp. A good time was had by all!

Lots of Roaring Camp employees grew up there including Melani Clark the owner. It is a really great crew that works there. Too bad you didn't get to meet Melani. The retaining wall at the wye is to allow construction of the adjacent trail for bike and pedestrians. The plan is for it to run the whole length of the line, 32 miles from Watsonville to Davenport. I just love Chestnut Street with the wig wags and the friendly neighbors. I used to drive school bus on Chestnut and River Streets. Great video. Looks like you had a great time. ❤

We just went on a trip to Santa Cruz and didn’t realize the beach train only ran on weekends this time of year. Been on the steam train up there though as well as Yosemite Sugar Pine RR out side of Yosemite National Park. I think the next one I’d like to check out is in Jamestown, maybe during there Christmas deal they put on.

I lived in Santa Cruz until 2000. I was with a friend many years ago during the SP days, walking the line. We had just walked through the tunnel referred to years ago when SP operated the line, hadn't cleared it by a minute when a train came up behind us. It was a Saturday and running a weekend train was very unusual in the day. Scared us mucho.

That's a cool video and getting the cabrides were pretty cool. The video I sent you teaches one about steam locomotive operations. It's a good informative video. I've never been there. I should visit but I usually go to the mainline stuff.

The bridge at the east end of the Boardwalk is also where they filmed the beach hideout scenes in The Lost Boys

Hay Mark : The SF CF7 remains as a favourite Loco. As one of a successful 70's re-build [ 233 ( ? ) Units ] program; check out the history of these somewhat unique Locos ... With more than just a few still working their way in Regional / Short-Lines. Lakka + Cheers For Now / Johnny 🤙🤟

RC has 4 CF-7s. 2 are stranded in Watsonville because of bridge problems. One of those is used to interchange with UP in Pájaro.

Hey Mark I have an idea and that is to Ride the Amtrak San Joaquin service to something of your choice like to go eat event just a day trip etc

I've been considering that for awhile, but with their sketchy service and my luck, I'd have to ride a bus back home, which happened to me and my family some years ago on a trip to Fresno.

Hey mark, I have recently started up a signals position in Perth, Western Australia. I was wondering if in the states, are your signals workers also qualified electricians? It is a government regulation in AUS that we all are electricians. Currently trying to get my brain around signaling diagrams, im sure you remember your first time! All the best.

While the signal dept. does deal with aspects of the AC that powers our equipment, we are not certified electricians. UP, anyway, has an electrical department that deals with anything over 240vac. It takes a while to get used to prints, but once you do, it's pretty easy to follow. Good luck! It's a good, and challenging career!

Street running is cool but a lot of trainmen I've talked to tell me they don't really like running down streets.

RC staff are used to it. The community is used to it. They have very few incidents. The recent one on River Street was because a teenager tried to run in front of the locomotive.
