Free Western Movie: Santa Fe Trail - Cowboy Movie - In 1854, Jeb Stuart, George Custer and other graduates from West Point are posted to Kansas to help pacify the territory before railroad construction to Santa Fe can resume.
Santa Fe Trail (1940)
Director: Michael Curtiz
Writer: Robert Buckner (original screenplay)
Stars: Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Raymond Massey
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 13 December 1940 (USA)
Filming Locations: Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
Storyline:
"The story of Jeb Stuart, his romance with Kit Carson Holliday, friendship with George Custer and battles against John Brown in the days leading up to the outbreak of the American Civil War." Written by Col Needham on IDMb.com
Reviews:
"When you look into the face of Raymond Massey's riveting John Brown, you are looking into the face of Osama bin Laden; when you watch his band of murderous abolitionists, you are watching bin Laden's al Qaeda. Look at a photo of bin Laden while you watch Massey here - the resemblance is spooky!
The righteous indignation of other reviewers at the "pro-slavery" bias of the movie misses the point. "Santa Fe Trail" is about fanaticism, not slavery. It's easy to preach to the choir, to put the fanatic on the "wrong" side. It's far more useful to put the fanatic on the side of right, as is done in "Santa Fe Trail". The evil depicted here is not the easy evil of slavery, but the more problematic evil of fanaticism.
The user score for this movie is due to the Political Correctness Brigade, who can't get past their sanctimony, to pay attention to the story and think rather than react. And by the way, Ronald Reagan (and I'm a Democrat) was a fine actor and did a good job in "Santa Fe Trail," as did the rest of the cast.
The most dangerous - and obnoxious - people are those convinced of their own virtue, be they Northern abolitionists, Southern racists, Muslim militants...or adolescents masquerading as movie critics." Written by jacksflicks on IMDb.com
"Santa Fe Trail" is an exciting movie. It's not just the action that is exciting but the drama between the conflicting characters as well. It's a well acted movie by everyone involved, especially Raymond Massey. Massey gives such a compelling performance that after I watch "Santa Fe Trail" (once a year or so) I want to learn more about the real John Brown. Then I go to the library but the only book they have on Brown is about 600 pages long. Then I chicken out and go home." Written by pmtelefon on IMDb.com

Believe it or not, this film was rather radical in the sense that the son was able to follow his dream without expecting to help out in his father’s business and the daughter was just expected to look pretty and marry well but the daughter is helping her father run the business because the father recognized her skill for it!

It's interesting how if John Brown had only paid his trusted soldier things may have ended differently. Irregardless of what someone else feels about John Brown, I appreciate his efforts he made to free the slaves, in the best way he knew how. And from what I'm hearing in history, it was John Brown that prompted Lincoln to enact the Emancipation Proclamation, the following year after Brown's death, so he did make a good mark, in history, for being the forerunner. There's no denying, he had a certain bravery, about himself. My perspectives.✌🏽

Are you saying that every speech in this movie between the principal characters is true? And the scene with the Native woman scratching the ground with a stick foretelling their future actually happened? Give me a break!

@@magovenor There are tons of inaccuracies. J. E. B. Stuart (future Confederate general) and George Custer were not in the same class (graduated several years apart and never met). There was no attempt to build a railroad along the Santa Fe trail. There was no person who defected from John Brown to inform the US about Harper's Ferry. Also, the US Calvary did not suppress the raid (as seen in the film) but by the Marines. Also, Jefferson Davis (future President of the Confederate States) was served as the Secretary of War. Jefferson Daivs, future President of the Confederacy, was never Secretary of War.

As Lincoln, as John Brown and as Boris Karloff, lol ("Arsenic and Old Lace"). I think part of the reason it is called the golden age of Hollywood is because even the character actors were so exceptional.

This film is remarkable in confronting the issues leading up to the Civil War quite openly--even though it's weird that it often seems to sympathize more with the slaveholding Southern traitors-to-be. On historical accuracy, Custer's and JEB Stuart's times at West Point didn't actually overlap. Raymond Massey's John Brown is one of his most unforgettable performances.

@D Sullivan Indeed. Stuart and Custer graduated several years apart. There was no railroad construction along the trail until two decades later. There was no defector of John Brown who ratted on Harper's Ferry. Herper's Ferry was supressed by the Mairnes; not the calvery. So way off.

Of J.E.B. Stuart, they said that he was the only man whom a beard improved his appearance. Indeed, his classmates nicknamed him 'Beauty' in derogatory terms. Quite ironic that he should be portrayed by one of the most handsome men in history.

The good old days before the "wokanistas" made it a sacrilege to admit that any Southernor was allowed to possess nobility of spirit (and no, I am not a Southerner and my family has lived in Pennsylvania since 1682 - yes 1682, we literally came over with William Penn).
