Now that you've heard the studio version, you're gonna *_really_* like this live version on KZfaq (there's a couple of em) which is a bit more uptempo. Yes, it's perfectly orchestrated just as in the studio version, just faster. And it's always neat to see Carlos "directing" his band. You know they play it just the way he wants it. I was gonna recommend the live version from the '78 album Moonflower which has so many great live tracks! (I'm sure that one is somewhere on YT.) If I'm not mistaken, that one has Let the Children Sing attached to it.

Graham Lear was on traps. In 1992 he was retired from Santana to Portland OR where I lived, studying percussion. He was teaching kids basic drumming at a strip mall music store, so I had a few lessons with him. Off the charts his talent. But just an ordinary dude.

Santana was my first concert in 1971, love them to this day. Totally agree with you, Guitar, Percussion, Keyboards and Latín beat are the heart of Santana as a group!

Half is live, half is studio but the main point that the live version of this song is amazing and the rest of the album is killer, is indeed correct.

Unless you're avoiding a personal-time deep dive into Santana, or just getting a couple full albums to check out, I'd have to recommend the debut studio album, and Moonflower from like 1978 or so as the first two. Abraxas (2nd album) and Santana III are really good, too, and he's got a couple from the 70's where he got off into more more jazz-fusion with Caravanserai and Love Devotion Surrender which he recorded with John MacLaughlin and his Mahavishnu Orchestra. He got back to Latin, rock and pop in the 80s and started doing a lot of collaborations in the 90's. Just a great career.

Just a little historical tidbit since you mentioned Humble Pie opening for other bands. On their first US tour, the Pie opened for Santana. Can you imagine what a great concert that must have been, and probably cost less than $20! Drummers Jerry Shirley (HP) and Michael Shrieve (Santana) were both just 17 and Jerry says they formed a strong friendship since they were they were the youngest on the tour.

The absolute best song for me by Santana. Man this takes me back. I took into a dance club and had them play it. The whole place was on the dance floor. The bartender bought the album from me and and a large martini! Please find a way to do “ Pictures at an Exhibition “ by EL&P. It’s their best epic! You will not believe what you’re hearing from the day.

Happier than a clam at high tide/pig in slob, cheese eating grin (run out metaphors). Does your mouth hurt from grinning so hard? You were really liking this! Santana provides a very satisfying sound. The next song you might want to do off this album is Let It Shine. Be forewarned, Santana has an extensive catalog, so you should do some private listening on the side just for yourself, you won't regret it.

Santana is one of my all-time favorite artists. I do really love his earlier stuff - Soul Sacrifice, Jungle Strut, Black Magic Woman, Etc. I cut my musical teeth as a bass player in the S. Florida music scene in the '60s and '70s so I was exposed to tons of Latin rhythms. Blues Image was one of those bands - absolutely incredible with a guitar player that rivaled Santana - Mike Pinera and a percussion section with Joe Lala and Manny Bertamattie and the incredible keyboard work of Frank "Skip" Konte and phenomenal bass work of Malcolm Jones.
