Santhebennur brings to mind images of a historical pushkarini or Santhebennur Honda, which is known for its architectural beauty. History of Santhebennur town is closely linked to this pushkarini.
In 16th century, Kenga Hanumantappa Nayaka one of the chiefs of Vijayanagar empire built Rama Temple and pushkarini at this place.
The pushkarini with a majestic mantapa at the centre called Vasanta Mantapa is built in Indo-Arabic architecture style.
This was built to commemorate Kenga Hanumantappa Nayaka’s victory over the rulers of Bijapur
The sides of the pushkarini are veneered with granite steps, 52 steps from the main entrance and 44 steps in other three sides.
Initially, there were eight towers at the cardinal points. However, of these eight, only six remain intact now.
Santhebennur Pushkarni is said to be the biggest in Karnataka.
The pond spans over an area of about 250 feet in length and 240 feet in width, with a depth of over 30 feet.
Vasantha Mantapa is of multi-level and covers an area of about 34 square feet.
While the arches, vaults and domes of the mantapa represent the Arabic style; its columns, pyramidical towers and carving embody Indian style of architecture.
The mantapa is built in such a way that, for an onlooker on the banks of the pushkarini, it appears to be floating on water.
The pond was used to perform teppotsava, or floating festival, of the deity.
It is said that scores of people from across the region used to gather to witness this colourful festival and the family members of the Nayaka rulers would witness the festival from the mantapas on the banks of the pushkarini.
As per historical records, in 17th century, the army of Bijapur sultan led by commander Ranadullakhan invaded Santhebennur.
Ranadullakhan constructed a Musafirkhana or a place to rest on the bank of the pond.
Within this premises, one can find a beautifully maintained garden as well.
Right opposite to Santhebennur Pushkarni and less 100 meters distance is located Sri Rama Devasthana.
Those who visit Pushkarni must visit this Temple which is also known for its architectural splendour.
Sri Rama temple was inaugurated by Maharaja of Mysore many years ago.
