If you choose to go by your own car, the journey from São Luís to Santo Amaro is via highway 402 and takes approximately 4 hours. Leaving Barreirinhas, the trip takes around 1 and a half hours.
The best time to visit Santo Amaro do Maranhão and explore the wonders of Lençóis Maranhenses is during the dry season, which runs from June to September. During this period, the lagoons are full and crystal clear, providing a spectacular setting for visitors. Furthermore, the climate is milder, with pleasant temperatures and less rain.
During the rainy season, which occurs between December and May, the lagoons can dry out or have lower levels, which reduces the visiting experience. Therefore, avoid this time of year if you want to make the most of the natural beauty of Santo Amaro.
