She's a very intelligent woman and articulates herself well.. |I think her intelligence is why she is such a wonderful actress.

exactly. I always liked her performances but I only recently saw a string of her interviews and she is witty and smart, polite and funny. Professional but not too stiff. Bright, intelligent blue eyes and a very distinct Irish accent. I am in love!

@@theultimatecatloverchannel9432 I noticed this too... i recently just started liking her very much and watched her interviews and was relieved to see that she has no interviews which are painful and awkward to watch like some of the actors i like... and I watched brooklyn the first time last week and I liked her acting very much....movie was so good that i also read the novel after watching it so i pictured her as eilish.. she really captures the character...

I first saw Saoirse Ronan in “Brooklyn,” and I thought she was superb as Eilish Lacey in this excellent film. And, then I read that she had also appeared as the scheming, young girl, Briony, in the film, “Atonement,” which I had seen several years before. In watching “Atonement,” again with the dvd commentary by the director, he pointed out that while Ms. Ronan was outstanding as the conniving Briony, she was nothing like Briony in person, but was a very friendly and outgoing young girl off-camera. Ms.Ronan was also terrific in the Catholic high school drama/comedy, “Lady Bird.” I hope Ms. Ronan receives an Academy Award for Best Actress in the future. She certainly deserves one.

I am an immigrant. Seen many movies about immigrants in many languages. In all immigrantion related movies character has to chose between 2 places and they show orthodox decision. What makes Brooklyn movie different from them is Ellis takes rational decision. The same I would do if In my life, if I was in her shoe and that's why this movie has won my heart. It is inspiration for me in my home sick days. We need movies like these. Bravo.

I think that scene where Eilis is in America, and the old man started singing an Irish song in Gaelic, and we see her tear up. That's when she was probably feeling very homesick and alone. Great film, perfect ending!

Not at all....thedys70......It struck the chord that many of our hearts play out through our lives....This choice over that....this action over that....funny how what can seem like pivotal decisions were self-limiting, but seemingly small ones (like giving "that person" a chance) have repercussions that weave a lifetime.

I think this film is superb. The large number of Irish-Italian American film-goers alone assured this film of being enthusiastically received in the United States, which it was.

The right thing would be to honor your vows and respect the man you chose to marry. That’s the right thing to do. Each person would do what they feel benefits them more, of course.

Ending: She was human like all of us after all. There were times she second guessed herself (please don't tell me you have never done so). Yeah so what that she was already married at the time when she started to have feeling for the Irish handsome gentleman and purposefully wanting to suppress her love for her husband (by putting away his letters) when she came back. LoL, she can't be perfect ALL the time! But providence has it that the sin of her own mother and of the gossipers in town made her realized that she did do the right thing to have had married the right man and wanted to go back to her true love. In multiple choice quizzes, the first educated guess is often the correct one. But honestly, I wanted to kick her butts when she put those letters away after he had put so much efforts into it as evidenced by hiring his professional writer, his young punked brother.

I've read the book and seen the movie. Both are great but I wish Eilis made a decision on her own and not because she's caught or because she's married. It's not as if she met Tony just now and married him, she knew him for more than a year and the other guy has been mean to her before she went to America. Somehow, this character left me dissatisfied.

Why what happened in the novel?
@kensellers4082
@kensellers4082 3 жыл бұрын
@@viciousLUA Author Colm Toibin leaves the ending somewhat ambiguous, with Eilish leaving her Irish hometown on a train. He has said that he wished he had ended the novel like in the film, with Eilish and Tony enjoying a joyous reunion. Also, in the novel, Eilish had two older brothers, who had immigrated to England for much better employment opportunities. In the film, there is no mention of any brothers in the Lacey family.

@@kensellers4082 Thank you for explaining that to me! I do love their reunion scene in the end. I wish there were brothers in the film but maybe that could've distracted from the romance lol.

I agree. It felt as though she made the decision because she was caught. But I want to believe the fact she was caught was what brought her to reality and make her realize she was wasting her time. Like she had this veil when she went back home because it suddenly became everything she had wanted before leaving. And her ego took a hold of it. That I understand. So the lady bringing up to light her marriage could have been like breaking a glass, or lifting the veil “hey look at what you are doing. Aren’t you supposed to be married?” But of course, that’s my mind elaborating more than the film lets on.

I noticed the final scene, she is just standing against the wall across the street. Barely smiling, tears of joy or running to meet him. Now she starts her American life. She made a mistake, she told none back home, went out with the Irish boy, now others knew, staying would shame her mother, not to mention the gossip would be terrible. So she went back to New York but she left her heart in Ireland. My parents were both immigrants from Ireland but met here. The portrayal of the Emerald Isle is dead on the mark. What a movie, not a joyous ending, but happy enough for them.
@IvanLendl87
@IvanLendl87 8 жыл бұрын
Respectfully, but very much, disagree. The reason for the pensive look on her face (both on the boat heading back to America as well as standing against the wall across the street from Tony's work) was she was concerned about how Tony would feel about her at that point. She now knows beyond question her life is not an n Ireland but rather in Brooklyn with Tony. In her mind, since she had not responded to his letters while in Ireland, she has reason to wonder if Tony still loves her like he did before. When he comes over to her and takes her in his arms she knows he still does - and her smile is huge. She loves him and is relieved that Tony still loves her so much. It's similar to the scene where she explains to Tony why she didn't say "I love you" back but to him but if he ever says it again she will say "I love you" b/c that's how she feels. She was done with her life in Ireland. No more longing for the past & Ireland. Joy over life w Tony.

@@IvanLendl87 You pegged it Ivan. She even SAYS "..You realize that is where your life is." I tend to think her time going back to Ireland was something she needed to go through. Now she will always love Ireland but have no regrets and not spend her life with Tony looking over her shoulder at what could have been. I sense she is happy with her choice. And omg set this in 1885 and you have my grandmother, probably many people's grandmother. :)
