SAORGE MEDIEVAL VILLAGE :
SAORGE is a monument in itself, a witness to medieval architecture. This commune, which looks like a “Tibetan village”, is fully listed and is one of the most beautiful villages in France.
A maze of narrow streets, vaulted passages, Saorge, a typically medieval village, is an old fortress clinging to the side of the mountain and forms like an amphitheater above the Roya gorges. Formerly defended by three castles, the stronghold of Saorge, reputed to be impregnable, was nicknamed "the lock of Roya".
Saorge is an important point on the “Route of Baroque and historical organs of the Roya Valley”.
Saorge is a village as surprising and singular as its geographical position and its general appearance demonstrate.
Overlooking the Roya valley, an immense geological lineament, it is also at the virtual intersection of two valleys that have missed each other: the Bendola valley, one of the most authentically wild of the valleys of the Maritime Alps, and the Caïros valley, formerly vegetable garden and vineyard of the Saorgians.
The life of the elders was undoubtedly as hard as one can imagine in view of the poverty of the land, the altitude of the village, 500m, limit for the cultivation of the olive tree, very insufficient for breeding, imposing on the inhabitants an incessant back and forth movement according to the seasons, to follow the herds, gather fodder for the winter, organize food crops, live as close to a source as possible.
This difficulty of subsistence has shaped the inhabitants of Saorge, and their way of life, making them create an original village with bewitching charm.
The location of the village on a very old road, now obsolete, makes it a traditional place of welcome.
Municipality of the Alpes-Maritimes, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Saorge takes place on the Franco-Italian border. Perched village, it is located forty kilometers from Menton and about sixty kilometers from Nice, overlooking the gorges of the Roya river.
Populated since Roman times, the town of Saorge was for a long time part of the county of Ventimiglia. Became property of the County of Savoy at the end of the 14th century, it was the scene of numerous destructions and other military attacks in the centuries that followed. The village becomes French again in the middle of the 19th century following a referendum among the inhabitants.
Today, Saorge is a popular tourist site for its proximity to Italy, but also for its architectural heritage and its vast choice of sports and outdoor activities.
