Iv always wanted to find a Tasmanian sapphire so last weekend I went out on an adventure and tried my luck. Think I'm pretty well hooked on it now.

I used to do that around there up until i joined the Army in 91 , best way to spot the saphires is to spread your wash while wet across a mirror , hopefully it's sunny and the light shines through the semi precious stones.

I'm a 66 year old grandmother of 6 boys. I do appreciate your adventures. What I appreciate the most is the fact that you don't swear. I've loved geology since my father introduced me to the garnet mines in North Creek NY when I was a child. You inspire me!

Nice work mate Great effort Those little half turns are definitely the best way to settle heavies. Important almost lost technique when gold panning. Cheers Bruce

I think the little yellowy-brownish ones are Zircons and the clear could be Topaz or a clear Beryl.

Either my eyes are playing tricks on me but I swear I seen a small light sky blue sapphire at 9:38 in the 3 o’clock position in the sand you missed. Love your videos though very interesting to watch 👍🏽🙂

Sapphires can be any colour except red. The red version is ruby. They are the same mineral (corundum or aluminium oxide) but with different impurities to change the colour. Very nice collection.

Mike Wilson the likely hood of them being ruby is dismal at best. They are most likely garnet or zircon, I'm leaning more towards the last one. Zircon is a natural stone, the man made form of it is cubic zirconia most common in dress jewellery. Zircon has a reflectiveness very similar to diamond but without the hardness or therefor the density of a diamond. Still a pretty stone when cut right.

Mike Wilson also while sapphires can be a multitude of colours the main three colours found in Australia are traditional blue, green and yellow.

TAS D does it hold gold? 🤭 haha. I did bring it with the intention of catching fines. But i figured it’d slow down the process. I love how quick gem sieves are compared to panning!
