This instrument is a arciliuto (italian) or Erzlaute (german) or archlute (english). It was popular in early baroque. There are some subtypes like Chitarrone and Theorbe, but they are more or less all the same: a lute with some bordun/bourdon/drone bass and 2 separate tuning pegboxes.

The archlute is in basics a renaissance lute in G with extra basses. A theorbo is a bass lute in A, also with extra basses, but with the so called reentrant tuning. The 2 highest strings are tuned an octave down.

My classical guitar instructor used to say that if you played the Lute, you would spend half your time playing and the other half tuning. It was just a joke. I love lute music. I just don’t have time or $ to put into another instrument. If I were 20 again, maybe. At 65, I still play 2-3 hours a day:)

I believe it's called a "Chitarrone", there is a similar instrument called a "Theorbo" but it is shorter.

The way the instrument is set up, there are strings meant for fingering and strings meant for open resonance. The strings that aren't over the fingerboard are simply there as bass strings. The reason for the ridiculously long neck is so that the strings may be longer and thus louder. It's the reason a wall piano is quieter than a grand piano. Many of these instruments have. Many of the bass strings that are over the fingerboard aren't supposed to be fingered either btw. It's hard to see from this angle, but the bass strings actually sit higher than the other strings that are supposed to be fingered. It would be really difficult to finger the bass strings even if you wanted to.

This is an archlute. You can tell from the sound -- it's higher pitched than a theorbo.

I am curious as to why this lute, and other early lutes, had so many strings. I imagine that fingering the lower strings can be clumsy given the wide neck of the instrument.
@heckler73
@heckler73 5 жыл бұрын
The lower strings are drones, presumably. I don't think they are meant to be fingered.

many mistakes. he should've better prepared for this. the reason this type of music isn't taken seriously is because this kind of vague apprehensive playing. rhythmic meter was written differently in the earlier periods of written composition. this is common knowledge among trained classical musicians.
