Lyrics:
So goodbye, yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh, I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road

Sir Elton John: "I was so blown away by the version of Yellow Brick Road. I've never heard anyone sing one of my songs like that ever. I can't thank you enough, giving your time and blowing my mind with that version. Because when someone sings your songs they usually copy you and she made it her own. That's brilliant--it's a hard song."

Feel free to bring us your attempt at a unique and original take on a world-famous classic that can make the writer swoon. It may not be for you, but even the layman should be able to appreciate this as a wonderful interpretation without it needing to align with their personal preferences.

I'm always surprised to read comments like this because, at least among my friends and the random people I connect with on various internet sites, Sara Bareilles is pretty well known. Maybe not quite as wide as Miley Cyrus, because she never hits the news for getting in trouble, and no one goes to Sara's videos to see how much skin she actually shows, but she does get quite a bit of recognition for her talent.

Because we no longer live in the era of the songwriter, we live in the era of the hitmaker. You can be both, but only the latter is necessary for maximum profit. Watch American Idol - much as I have enjoyed that as a talent show, it is solid proof that the most talented and/or most original do not usually win America's votes. Instead, the most votes go to the biggest crowdpleaser, even if it's just pleasing by way of lowest common denominator. Guy with guitar sings somewhat catchy, easily singable songs, has vaguely likable personality, gets the most votes. Depending on the audience you are trying to appeal to, there are different lowest common denominators, but songcraft, lyricism, and even extreme talent are not premium needs for modern success. I don't think older generations were necessarily better or smarter. I suspect they would have fallen for mass-produced stuff just as much (and in some cases, we can see that they did). It wasn't the dominant form of the entire music industry back then, but I think that's just because record companies took a while to figure out the formula.

Found this video again. Every once in a while, if we're lucky enough, we get to see an artist cover a classic without ruining it and compromising it's original integrity. And then, even more rarely, we get to see this - an artist who not only fully respects the original composition, but takes it to a completely new place and an even higher level. This version walks that fine line between originality of it's own, while paying homage to Elton John, and at the same time magically creates something so brilliant and powerful. Sara has pulled this off in a stellar way, much like Johnny Cash did with the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt". Simply spellbinding and moving.....

As a young upstart who had no idea who Elton even was until she saw the rocketman film, I'd like to thank you for openminded to other artists! Sorry if this is kinda... impudent, coming from me, but most of the older people around me are teritorial traditionalists in pretty much every aspect surrounding them (& love imposing or uneccessarily defending the "sanctity" of their tastes on others) so i just really appreciate this approach. Thanks for listening to me!

Just for the record, because I've seen a few comments about this--the note Sara hits at 0:56 for "blues" is totally in tune. The chord it makes with the piano is indeed dissonant, but it is intentionally so. It's a close interval intended to create harmonic tension.

Had never really paid much attention to the lyrics before hearing this version, previously had just enjoyed the music. Your statement about the twisting of the soul is so accurate. I don't tend to be very emotional but hearing this for the first time literally brought tears to my eyes. Have not had a reaction to a song like this since the first time I heard Eva Cassidy sing What A Wonderful World, and People Get Ready, and Bridge Over Troubled Water, her versions of these are also emotionally gut wrenching because you can almost feel her soul and passion in her voice as she belts out those lyrics. Sara's singing is much the same.

my younger son just introduced me to this hauntingly hypnotic version. Sara flexes an amazing range as well as perfect timing of transitioning from tender to forceful and back to tender. unlike so many of the performers from AGT and The Voice, Sara sings in her own cocoon, lost in the world of Elton and Carole, and away from the vanity of today's cheap knockoffs. this version is amazing.

I was just watching the movie about Elton John's life, called "Rocket Man" and came to KZfaq to find the lyrics from the song "Sorry seems to be the Hardest Word" (I couldn't understand them on Netflix). I've loved Sara for many, many years! Quite a while ago, I accidently read a tweet where two of her friends or fans (not sure which) were talking about her and they talked about how much she swears (especially the 'F' word!); They were totally okay with it and thought it was funny - which it can be, because I use it often when I speak with my sister...lol. Although, that just in private, and apparently Sara says it in public, like on stage sometimes. My daughter is in her early 40's, runs her own company, and says the 'F' word in front of clients and when writing - I just find it so unprofessional! But I'm just an old lady now, so I guess I'm aging out of being 'cool' although I do still know what 'really cool' is - it's Sara Bareilles!!!

Insanely talented singer and writer. I'll admit, when I first heard "love song" on the radio years ago I thought Sara was just another mainstream female pop/indie singer. What I later found was that I had completely misjudged the depth of that song in particular, and then came to search for more of her music and realized what natural skill and creativity she fosters. I've heard "Yellow Brick Road" by Elton growing up my whole life - but it wasn't until I came across this rendition a few months ago that I was able to finally feel and understand the meaning and value of this song. Not only does she hit every note with precision, she simultaneously creates a very fluid and free sound that would seem to contrast but does not. :)

Not gonna lie. First time I saw this video, at around the 0:53 mark, I thought I was going to hate it. I'm a harsh critic of Elton John covers because he's my #1 lifetime favorite musical artist without waver since the 70's. But this one? I kept listening and OMG. She claimed it as her own. It's not only THE best live cover of an Elton John song I've ever heard (or studio for that matter), it's a spiritually profound performance in and of itself. And that's just while I'm watching it on my computer through cheap desk speakers and a small sub. I like it so much in fact, that I'll take my tablet into my car and watch it on KZfaq on mute, and then sync the video with the audio version I've already downloaded on my phone from Tidal in 24-bit 96KHZ FLAC format, and play the sound through my phone's USB into my Explorer's audio system. And I'll sit in the driver's seat in my garage in the complete dark, engine and lights off, while I let my 2nd battery power up my reference class A/B amplifiers, German digital sound processor, the audiophile-quality Danish speakers in my custom A-pillars and heavily modified front doors, and the American-made 12-inch subwoofers in the back with 2,400 watts of power. And right around the 1:43 mark I start to tear up. And it only gets better from there. Her voice cuts right through me, my front soundstage makes it feel like she's right in front of me and inside my head at the same time. It's almost intrusive at first, I wasn't expecting it. But a second later, Sara has my full consent to do whatever the heck she wants to me for the next few minutes. The audience is placed all around me like I'm there, and I join in, singing my lungs out because I'm in my car, and I can. I sometimes forget she's playing the piano because her voice takes over, but it's so hard to miss because as she pounds on those lower keys, I can feel it in my body. It's one heck of a performance and one heck of a recording. I get more than goosebumps, I need a Kleenex! This performance is a legit religious experience to me. Sorry, that might have been TMI. LOL
