Mixing strings in neoclassical or modern classical music is a bit different to traditional classical music or pop and so in this video I take you on a mix walkthrough to show how I created a big, full and wide string mix in a recent mix featuring only strings and piano.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ► MIXING STRINGS NEOCLASSICAL MUSIC ◀︎▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Mixing strings and orchestral elements in ambient music requires a different touch compared to traditional classical music or pop. Depending on the emotion and feel you want the mix to impart, you can use EQ, Tape and compression to sculpt the perfect sound. In this video, I walkthrough a recent mix and talk through my plugin choices and reasoning behind the way I mixed real strings in a sparse and beautiful piano and string composition.

The only tip that I would consider worthy of mentioning to someone with your skills and knowledge is the SSL Fusion Stereo Image which I absolutely love. Just the included presets add so much width and bring what ever it is applied to alive, and I'm still learning how to really use it. To my ears you have added detail to this track as well as making it wider, fuller and warmer, quite amzing. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.

Nice video, very useful. One thing i would say is the Sonnox Inflator is notorious for aliasing, i would check out Sonnox Limiter's "Enhance" slider or ARBOREAL's PiMAX for the inflator effect. Check out Paul Third's video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5unh5mYlpzQnqM.html

Brilliant video, thank you! I'd love to know how the strings were treated before they got to you and how your process would change if you got the raw, untreated strings!

Hi Sara. I have watched your PLP video a faur few times as classical processing / mixing is rarely covered on youtube and I loved what you did and the same applys to this video. I especially appreciate that you take the time to explaine your plugin choices and why you chose a particular pluging together with how you use it. A track that I am trying to mix at the moment has a string section that runs through the whole song, across 4 octives, so this video has really helped.

This is fantastic! I'd love to see more content like this. Quick question; do you feel like top-down mixing is better suited to certain genres or do you apply it to everything? On a mix like this it seems like a very efficient technique, but I wonder if you have tracks that are a little more temperamental might it be better to start there, so you aren't applying 'fixes' too broadly? Thanks

Lovely video, as always, Sara! If reverb is not baked into the sampled string sounds (or I'd like more), I'll employ the Bricasti M7 reverb emulation plugin Seventh Heaven. I'll start with the Clear Hall or A&M Chamber preset and play with the pre-delay until it sounds appropriate to the piece. Also, surgically using stereo wideners as you do on specific items/groups/busses is brilliant! It minimizes the artefacts that may result when using them on a whole mix. I do something similar where all of my reverb, delay, and harmonizer effects returns are fed into a dedicated buss. I have a stereo widener on that buss only. I just listened to your interview with Matt Boudreau on the latest WCA podcast #382. It's always a treat to hear what you're up to. Keep up the great work! All My Best, chaz

@SaracarterSimplyMixing. My goodness what a gift you have- I have used EVERY technique in this video for my recent neo-Classical work, of course adjusting the lay of the land to fit my work I do have a burning question I hope you would answer- I'm missing something here. The Reverb? Was this already baked into the stems when you received them? I'm not seeing a reverb bus here or if it is, I'm sorry I missed it. Cam you please advise? Im wondering how that factors into everything that you have explained so brilliantly here.
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing 4 ай бұрын
Yes, reverb was baked in by the producer. I often still will add my own if I think it needs more

Hi Sara - loved this video! Perhaps I missed it but I didn't see/hear anything about what relative loudness levels you prefer among the strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass). Do you make them all level, or are some louder than the others? I assume these would be balanced using RMS levels...
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing 2 жыл бұрын
Good point! I ask the producer to bake that into the tracks by sending me stereo groups
@johngraham9878
@johngraham9878 2 жыл бұрын
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Thanks - I just found this excellent 3 min YT video by Beat Kaufmann on how to do it from the Producer's standpoint... First choose a section of the piece where all the instruments are playing in a ff section, then (by ear), balance 1> Violas & Celli, then 2> Dbl Bass, 3> 2nd Violins, and finally 4> 1st Violins / melody... - this gives you the basic starting point. After that mix dynamically and musically to what sounds best - and (I assume) ride the sections with automation throughout the piece. Brilliant! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mMCblKxku5iWk4E.html

is it possible to achieve such good mixes with good quality sample libraries ou reckon? I've been composing neo classical for a bit and my sound never comes out as lively.
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing

Yes, absolutely. The quality of the sample library (and the programming) means less work and fewer plugins, which I find leads to the openness I think you're referring to.
