Sarah Coakley - Do Religions Complement or Contradict?

Religions clash and compete-that's a problem for those who believe. Some claim that the similarities of diverse religions-such as seeking transcendence beyond the physical world-outweigh their differences. Do diverse religions complement and enrich each other with respect to fundamentals?

Existential Transhumanist Just use logic. What is necessarily greater than everything which can be conceived? Call it what you will, call it the great green alkaseisure, many people call it God ;)

That is, without doubt, the oddest pronunciation of "cacophony" I've ever heard. Great conversation, though.

The final outcome Sarah suggests is essentially 'Sanatana Dharma' or Hinduism where each person seeks God in his/her own way, while respecting every other approach to God.

It does not make sense to categorise everything in your religious language! The so-called Sanathan Dharma itself has its own rituals and priesthood, which separates and distinguishes itself from all other paths. Ask your Brahmin pandit to practice Buddhist or Sikh rites in his mandir from now onwards, because it is just as valid as any other traditions, and see his response!

Before watching: I expect this acedemic to give either a vague non-answer or to give a wrong answer... now I'll watch and see what happens. Maybe she will surprise me. Right, I've finished watching. He is very sharp. She, on the other hand, has not understood some very basic truths concerning her own religion. In Christianity, the God who is real has revealed Himself in an exclusive way to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and their descendants, leading ultimately to the gift of His own son, Jesus Christ, who is the saviour of the world, the one and only sacrifice for sins, in whose name forgiveness of sin is preached throughout the whole earth. He is the only man to enter into permanent physical resurrection. He is the Lord of Lords and King of Kings unto whom has been entrusted all judgment. He has poured out His Spirit. Jesus said that 'salvation is of the Jews' and that the Spirit 'will lead you into all truth'. So gathering some sympathetic intellectuals from other religions to find some common ground is nearly useless. Christ is emphatically the ruler of the Kingdom of God. Every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. There is no room for discussion. Christianity is true. All other religions exist as a rejection of Christ, and are thus condemned. Coakley is useless as a religious leader. Nobody should pay any attention to her.

I don't think Sarah is saying "all religions are equal," she's rather explicitly condemning that opinion as silly. This sounds more like a "every religion may contain truths of some sort." Comparative religious work isn't pointless: it is a way to discuss differences, but I don't think Sarah is at all implying that differences are pointless.

How do seemingly intelligent people sit around and actually debate the merit of an all seeing, all knowing, infinite, immortal, man in the sky? This is pure comedy, only it's the sort that leaves one depressed, an aching for how young and dumb the entire human species is. I have to slap myself every now and then and realize we really not that far along, all the dress up we play, we're still essentially moon barkers. Primitive animals, with our heads, craned to the sky, screaming at the shiny object above.

Miles Dyson Just like a dozen.or so.ants aren't able to.contemplate the inner workings of a lawn mower engine, or the geophysics of a volcano, one wouldnt have expected Einstein and Godel to have had all the answers to the nature of God as they often strolled around and talked about it.

Exodus 20 Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property. If I grant your statement as true, that Einstein and Godel believed in God that would pass Exodus 20 as moral law then it would only prove the premise of my original statement that when brilliant minds fall down into the abyss of blind faith in nonsense it is nothing less than tragic. Deuteronomy 2 :37 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain: again if Einstein and Godel believed this to be good moral teaching, they must not have had any issues with the Nazis committing genocide in their time, and they might even have been okay with all the subsequent genocides that would follow in Rwanda, in Bosnia, etc. Blind faith in foolishness is tragic and religion is pure foolishness--no matter how brilliant the mind that holds on to those fallacies.

"all seeing, infinite, immortal, man in the sky?" The oxymoron is so strong. All joking aside, something cannot be infinite and "a man in the sky" considering a man must be a contingent existence versus a necessary one as the word "infinite" would indicate. But then again you are arguing with biblical versus to disprove a metaphysical concept without taking any consideration for the architypal meaning and asserting the asinine idea of "blind faith", which is a logical impossibility. I suggest taking the time to study the subject rather than criticizing it before knowing anything about it as your comments clearly suggest.

There's a saying and it goes like this. "The pessimist may be right but it's the optimist that has all the fun along the way". I think something similar can be said about religion or religious beliefs. We don't have answers to our deepest questions so we look to the supernatural to fill the void inside us.

@@SereneBobcat So you hold that there is a moral law--invisible, intangible, yet definitely real and permanently true--through which you can determine what's wrong within the Bible. Believing in that kind of moral standard sounds a lot like believing in God.
