My favorite part of the poem is when Phil is saying "you are beautiful" over and over, but by the end Sarah is able to say it without him. Love brings out the best in us, love helps us love ourselves.

thank you for this new perspective, wow. i've listened to this countless times but i always interpreted it as phil being tired of telling her how beautiful she was, yk, that he kinda gave up on that but this perspective changed the whole poem for me

And love will tell you you are beautiful and mean it, over and over again. “You are beautiful.” When you first wake up, “you are beautiful.” When you’ve just been crying, “you are beautiful.” When you don’t want to hear it, “you are beautiful.” When you don’t believe it, “you are beautiful.” When nobody else will tell you, “you are beautiful.” Love still thinks you are beautiful. But love is not perfect and will sometimes forget, when you need to hear it most, you are beautiful, do not forget this.

laurentia K So this is all what you've learned from this ? This is all what you've seen ? I mean this proves a lot, not only you, but those who wrote this poem too. You see, love isn't about look, this proves that you are all shallow (I'm not judging you but this is what you can deduce) . I believe that love is the fact that you are ready to support and stand by someone, make him smile, make him laugh, be that positive energy in his life like he is to yours, make him happy regardless of the way he looks. They pictured love as a person, well, I'm afraid it's not. Hope you get my message.

This poem can have many interpretations, maybe that's your opinion ,but in my opinion, beautiful here is not a matter of a mere appearance but its the whole person, what makes them beautiful to you, and you tell them, and you let them know i am actually kind a surprise that from this beautiful poem i have quoted, you calling me shallow, based on your non judgmental deduction of course. ,
@unicornprincessxx
@unicornprincessxx 9 жыл бұрын
Ali Tahiri beauty does not only have to be skin deep, being beautiful does not make one shallow, and calling someone that you don't know, shallow, is judging them. Being ready to support someone and being there for them is beautiful but beautiful in a different sense. Do not be so closed minded as to think that words only have one meaning.

I don't think they're lovers. They're too close for that. A Jewish-Japanese American and a Japanese-Jewish American with the same verbal cadence and profound sense of perspective. I think Kay and Kaye are two halves of a whole. Must be incredible to have a friend like that.

“listen to the quiet” is my favorite line in this entire poem because I always forget that there may be times where I’m lonely or by myself for a bit. I forget to take a break from relationships-romantic or platonic- and really just relish in quiet moments where I have time to think. this poem is literally genius and I find myself coming back to it every day. thank you, sarah and phil.

When Love Arrives (Transcript of Sarah Kay & Phil Kaye's spoken word poetry) BOTH: I knew exactly what love looked like- in seventh grade. SARAH: Even though I hadn’t met love yet, if love had wandered into my homeroom I would’ve recognized him at first glance. Love wore a hemp necklace. PHILIP: I would’ve recognized her at first glance, love wore a tight french braid. S: Love played acoustic guitar and knew all my favorite Beatles songs. P: Love wasn’t afraid to ride the bus with me. B: And I knew, S: I just must be searching the wrong classrooms, P: just must be checking the wrong hallways, she was there, I was sure of it. S: If only I could find him. B: But when love finally showed up, P: she had a bowl cut. S: He wore the same clothes every day for a week. P: Love hated the bus. S: Love didn’t know anything about The Beatles. B: Instead, P: every time I try to kiss love, B: our teeth got in the way. S: Love became the reason I lied to my parents. P: I’m going to- Ben’s house. S: Love had terrible rhythm on the dance floor, but made sure we never missed a slow song. P: Love waited by the phone because she knew that if her father picked up it would be: S: “Hello? Hello? *heavy breathing* I guess they hung up.” P: And love grew, S: stretched like a trampoline. P: Love changed. S: Love disappeared, slowly, like baby teeth, losing parts of me I thought I needed. P: Love vanished like an amateur magician, and everyone could see the trapdoor but me. S: Like a flat tire, there were other places I had planned on going, B: but my plans didn’t matter. S: Love stayed away for years, and when love finally reappeared, I barely recognized him. P: Love smelled different now, had darker eyes, S: a broader back, love came with freckles I didn’t recognize. P: New birthmarks, a softer voice. S: Now there were new sleeping patterns, P: new favorite books. S: Love had songs that reminded him of someone else, P: songs love didn’t like to listen to. B: So did I. P: But we found a park bench that fit us perfectly, S: we found jokes that make us laugh. P: And now, love makes me fresh homemade chocolate chip cookies. S: But love will probably finish most of them for a midnight snack. P: Love looks great in lingerie but still likes to wear her retainer. S: Love is a terrible driver, but a great navigator. P: Love knows where she’s going, it just might take her two hours longer than she planned. S: Love is messier now, P: not as simple. S: Love uses the words “boobs” in front of my parents. P: Love chews too loud. S: Love leaves the cap off the toothpaste. P: Love uses smiley faces in her text messages. S: And turns out, B: love shits! S: But love also cries. And love will tell you you are beautiful P: and mean it, S: over and over again. P: You are beautiful. S: When you first wake up, P: “you are beautiful.” S: When you’ve just been crying, P: “you are beautiful.” S: When you don’t want to hear it, P: “you are beautiful.” S: When you don’t believe it, P: “you are beautiful.” S: When nobody else will tell you, P: “you are beautiful.” S: Love still thinks - you are beautiful. P: But love is not perfect and will sometimes forget, S: when you need to hear it most, B: you are beautiful, S: do not forget this. P: Love is not who you were expecting, love is not what you can predict. S: Maybe love is in New York City, already asleep, and you are in California, Australia, wide awake. Maybe love is always in the wrong time zone, P: maybe love is not ready for you. Maybe you are not ready for love. S: Maybe love just isn’t the marrying type. P: Maybe the next time you see love is twenty years after the divorce, love looks older now, but just as beautiful as you remembered. S: Maybe love is only there for a month. P: Maybe love is there for every firework, every birthday party, every hospital visit. S: Maybe love stays- P: maybe love can’t. B: Maybe love shouldn't. P: Love arrives exactly when love is supposed to, and love leaves exactly when love must. S: When love arrives, say, B: “Welcome. Make yourself comfortable.” P: If love leaves, ask her to leave the door open behind her. S: Turn off the music, listen to the quiet, P: whisper, B: “Thank you. Thank you for stopping by.”

I love almost everything they had to say in their beautiful poem....until the end. I do not know that I can, or would want to accept, a love that is transitory, finite, a love that will flutter away and leave me alone again. I have never really agreed with the concept that "it is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all." I'm not sure that that is really true. It is horrible to never have loved, to never have BEEN loved. But to finally have that, and then lose it again? To be all alone again? That would be a pain far worse than being alone in the first place ever could be...
@IfrahAhmad

+poopmaster13 I agree with you. I do not understand the beauty of trying to cherish something that cannot last, because then one is constantly on a search for this 'love', and is never truly satisfied because it does not stay.
@veduh
@veduh 8 жыл бұрын
I think the point of this, is that love comes in different ways. Sometimes the love that one may experience is only for a short time, and that it is okay because love can exist again, because love itself is constant, we just don't recognize it until it's in a body we are attracted to. Love, itself isn't finite, the vessel that it comes in, comparability with you, could be finite.

When this was first posted, I was a teenager. It felt so accurate to every experience I knew. Now, in my twenties, I still identify with every word. But it feels different. New loves. It feels sweet, and beautiful, remembering. And it hurts, the same amount. But differently. So grateful to always have this poem to express how I'm feeling, despite my own personal growth. It's a classic.

This poem was both the male and female perspective of growing up on the topic of love. Sarah talked about the women side of love and how the experiences they have had together have made what love is to her. Phil talks of the parts of the male side. They both are different but the same. They both describe how different and how random love may be. They talk over each other and with each other at the same time. The emphasis or most important parts were said together.

I first saw this performance soon after it was posted and I was 12 years old. At the time, I thought I was aromantic and I always hated romance in stories. But this poem stuck with me and I kept returning to it. Now I'm 23 and I've experienced love and heartbreak and healing for myself after a 4 year relationship, and 2 years alone after that. I'm returning to this poem and I finally realize why I loved it even though I hated romance in most other media. It's because it's a realistic, honest take on love. The other stuff isn't believable. This is exactly what love is like - like something you'd never expect. And it's a breath of fresh air to see the idea that you should be thankful that the relationship happened when you break up, rather than being angry or hateful. In most cases, your ex partner isn't a villain. They're human. So thanks for informing my perspective for 11 years and counting, now

From the first time I saw this even up to now in my late 20s, no other poem has ever hit me in such a primal way. Lizard brain, gut, and even the useless parts of my brain get railroaded into a swirl of short bursts of complete bliss, heartache, denouement, and unwavering hope. Hope for the day that I can feel this very same blend of raw emotions with someone who I truly love. May be the one I have in mind when they are (or I am) ready someday, but Love is fickle like that, especially if it was in front of you for so long and either it moved on or just wants to be sure that I can prove it while being responsible enough to maintain it with them. As a more recently discovered Aspie, I can look back now and see how the real thing had eluded me so much my whole life. Not because I was undeserving of it but because I never saw it in front of me or even could drop the “passing as Normal” act long enough to express it in a way that would be unique to me and how I think/act. Love was a lot of things to me at our first meeting, but I didn’t see them as such until I grew enough to kill my pride and see it unfiltered; themself growing apart and sowing resentment and possibly a hatred. Whichever the case, I can’t help but feel it’s still got me in mind...Magical Thinking not withstanding. This condition has allowed me to see, feel, and understand at a disproportionate pace; it being partially why I am so far away from the “Normal” I once strove to achieve, but as much as I hate and curse it...it gave me an equally extreme inverse in which I grow smarter, socially and otherwise, through my Intuition (Gut Feelings and Hunches) and Trial & Error. Love is one such thing. It’s at once complex, labyrinthine, childish, and overtly optimistic even in the face of the impossible...but I want to believe that I am deserving of the Love I dream about same as anyone else. Like anything, it takes work, doubly (perhaps triple) for the way my brain is wired. But Love, as these two put it, is where it should be and is in the moments that matter most to those around you. You can feel it somehow...and when you do, you know it’s a r’aison d’etre for whoever shared it with the world. If I want it to come from within more often, I have to be better about being kind to myself and others will feel it. It should be unconditional, but it isn’t if it doesn’t apply to oneself. For now, I have to trust Love to be having their best life while I work through the vacuum of their absence and restore what once was before I let them embody it. I’ll never find it in myself to hate them for showing me how I could be treated with patience, kindness, and faith then inverted it as the last few years of the decade their presence occupied came and went. I’m all the better for it and I want...no...need to remember how I used to love myself until they wandered in when others had to work for it but come up short. I just hope you’re loving yourself more than everyone else is and can manage once they fade into the aether, Love. You’re infinitely worth it. I’ll always love you, but I have work to do. Just take care of yourself and I will work on doing the same. I Love You and I always will. 🙈

Six years!! And everytime I hear it, it seems like a different one..a new interpretation everytime. Just like love. Love arrives differently, stays differently and leaves differently and everytime it leaves you are a different person. May be that's what love is.

I have watched thiss manny times, but having now watched it again for the first time in months: I feel like crying. normally it's so beautiful to listen to, but this time it just got me for some strange reason. minor detail: I am single and have been for nearly 18 years now so this doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Love comes in various forms. It may not be as a significant other. Stop trying to look for a certain type of love, and open your eyes to the love that's surrounding you. Maybe then you will find what you long for

Alexis Angulo oooh enjoy!!!! The show in KL is about 3 hours but there are local poets so 1:30 mins - local poets then 1:30 mins Phil and Kaye. Yeah they accept gifts! And if you have a book you can ask them to sign. You can also buy the book from them if you dont have. The show in KL is really relaxed and not a lot came so maybe that is why they have more time. There are so many empty seats. But I know in Manila it is already sold out! Enjoy!! It was truly a great experience and Im sure you will love it!

For those of you who don't care for the part about love not being able to stay, I would respectfully ask you to consider illness and death. This is a beautiful poem open to as many interpretations as there are audience members and I don't mean to disrespect anyone else's interpretation. I thought that was a rough part, too, especially about the mention of divorce. It seemed fatalistic and cynical to me at first, but I'm old enough now to understand that you really have to be in the right place mentally, emotionally, and sometimes physically and so does the other person for love to really work, and, by the way, love IS work. Sometimes that happens after what you thought was the relationship was over. So many young people rush into marriage because it's what they think they should be doing and they get so caught up in media hype that they don't take the time to (or can't) listen to their own inner voices and take their time. I'm not saying that young love is invalid, I'm just disturbed by the trend of "starter marriages" and "accessory kids." Anyways, my point is, "maybe love can't" reminded me of dear friends, family, even pets, that were absolutely beloved and cherished and felt awful about leaving their loved ones behind, felt guilty for making everyone cry, and on their deathbeds were trying to cheer everyone one else up while they were the ones hooked up to machines and suffering in pain. That's love. Now as for "maybe love shouldn't," I was in a long-distance relationship that we decided would be better as a friendship because the distance was too painful for me. We stayed best friends, communicating often, and years later, something just clicked. The distance was no longer such an insurmountable barrier. One of us is moving and we're going to be married next year. If we hadn't made that mutual decision to give ourselves breathing room and time to feel more stable in our own respective lives, I know I would've been a miserable wreck and possibly made a rash decision that would've made me more miserable and resentful. Sometimes, you really do need to walk away, after all, sorry to be cliche, but, if it's meant to be, it will be. I now have absolute faith in that. Love also has many, many forms. As someone stated, they love their cat, a mother loves her child, absolutely... and teachers love their students, neighbors can love each other, etc. One last comment and then I'll be quiet: I didn't read every comment, but everything I did read was respectful and kind, even if there were dissenting opinions. Thank you for that. The spirit of this poem deserves to be loved (lol) and cherished, not ripped apart by trolls. Thank you sincerely, KZfaq people, I really mean it. Gives internet cookies to anyone who read this far!!! Thank you Phillip & Sarah!!
