I saw Steve Goodman perform this song in 1972 at the Earl of Old Town in Chicago sitting at a table by the stage with John Prine and Art Thieme.

I only hope we never tire of Steve Goodman, the Guthrie's, Seegars who've kept us living free since the sixties. I've enjoyed this song and that folk music since Arlo and company put it out. What a great tribute to her father and a movement fostered in part by the Vietnam war and "America's reaction" to the worst of it and what we grew up knowing because of so many "folk heroes". Cool thing about this song is that there's a million different versions by million different artists, each and every one being awesome.

I’ve seen live video of her and her sisters singing backup with their dad. Just like Amy Helm, one heck of a family legacy.

Fabulous version of a great song

Oh it makes me cry! Steve would have so loved this! He loved kids so much, and he was so bowled over when yet another person want d to sing this song. We didn’t see him much but he knew an older relative of mine, and they were on the porch and I brought him out some coleslaw to go with his turkey sandwich and he asked me if I was a little girl or actually a secret angel, I think he would be sure Sarah was even more angelic singing the song so gently.

I first remember hearing "The City of New Orleans" as the main backdrop theme in a wonderful off-Broadway play in Greenwich Village, The Hot L Baltimore, many years ago. Not long after that, but still many years ago, I was able to go to a charitable fund raising concert at a high school in my town, Huntington, NY., that featured three elite song writer/performers: Pete Seeger, Harry Chapin and Steve Goodman. It was great! All three are gone now, first Steve, then Harry and then Pete. But the memory of that concert is still fresh in my mind, and puts a smile on my face whenever I think about it and all the wonderful music they left us with, including this song.

I always loved this song. The line, "Good mornin' America, how are ya?", seems to come to mind at the strangest times. I was not aware of this duo of Arlo's daughter/Woodie's grandaughter and a guitarist who can call John Steinbeck a relative, until about 20 minutes ago. Actually, it was written by Steve Goodman.

Nice version! Same mistake as Arlo though - passing "towns" that have no names is how Steve sung it. Referred to old stations where the signs had disappeared.
