Noveller's Sarah Lipstate is living that NAMM life: "powered by gear." Today, she's dropping by with a huge pedalboard full of her favorite effects including stompboxes from Earthquaker Devices, Game Changer Audio, and Red Panda Lab, and explains how experimenting with effects is often the key to her songwriting process.

I don't get why this girl isn't super famous. I saw her live a few years ago and the sounds she makes with a mono guitar rig are seriously otherworldly.

Jeff Valanzola When she has two DRRi on either side it's even better. She does stuff that has changed my mind on many of these pedals, that I once thought were barely usable, for me at least.

The sounds at the end. Wow very earnest and genuine interest in these pedals. Really cool to see someone use these pedals that way.

Nice to see Reverb interview Sarah Lipstate - an excellent musician with some very fine works - Brian Eno on six strings. Unfortunately, they could have filmed her board a bit better - couldn't really see the pedals.

First off I think she should play exactly how she is playing. Its refreshing seeing someone use a guitar in a different way. I love how the "seed" is mentioned about playing acoustic guitar. Then you have the ability to plug in and color it. I wonder if the riff around the 7 min mark was one such example.

I really liked the compositional stuff in the latter stages. Really great, mysterious arpeggios. It is awash in reverb and other stuff because quite obviously she is going after a darker, unconventional sound that has nothing to do with tasty tone and harkens back to all kinds of brilliant stuff being explored in the best (and it does not get much better, contrary to popular opinion) 80s guitar exploration work of guys like Johnny Marr, John McGeoch, Robin Guthrie, theEdge, Robert Smith. If you bring swaths of this nearly industrial level ambient work into your mixes, it can add depth and eeriness to work that might be a little lacking in character. It is a Renaissance era for pedals. Enjoy the hell out of it and it may take you in some different musical/sonic directions you might not otherwise go in.

i don't speak for anyone, nor is it my opinion that this is "bad" or whatever, but assuming someone is an ignoramus just because they simply don't enjoy this just makes you come off as pompous and elitist. you have this like "you poor fools and your tiny minds can't understand the profound nature of effects pedals" attitude. c'mon, man...

But is quite different specially if you are the player

It seems like you have a really specific standard in mind so why don't you share that. Also, for the kind of music she likes to make, perhaps unleashing all of the woodshed techniques she knows might not seem appropriate. I'd rather hear her or Hans Zimmer create a lush soundtrack than Yngwie but sometimes I just want to hear shred. I personally don't need all musicians to satisfy all of my interests, in fact, I can't think of a single one that does so maybe it's best to just appreciate the guitar playing she's released rather than worrying about what else she's capable. My favorite pizza place doesn't serve sushi and that's probably for the best...get my point?
@Dieckenish
@Dieckenish 6 жыл бұрын
Obviously, because I can clearly hear her create music and play the right notes at the right time all over the neck in this video. Also she uses that tremolo arm like nobody I've seen. Would definitely call that playing the guitar.

Check her out in this demo kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qrVkls-hytuvh3U.html And look up her live playing on KZfaq as well. She does some stuff that I don't hear many other solo players trying to do. When she has her stereo setup, with an amp on both sides of her, it sounds even better.
