Lyrics:
Hey, your glass is empty
It's a hell of a long way home
Why don't you let me take you?
It's no good to go alone
I never would have opened up
But you seemed so real to me
And after all the bullshit I've heard
Refreshing not to see
That I don't have to pretend
She doesn't expect it from me
So, don't tell me I
Haven't been good to you
Don't tell me I
Have never been there for you
Just tell me why
Nothing is good enough

I met Sarah Mac when I was in my mid twenties, in Houston, during her Fumbling Towards Ecstasy tour and her music and, especially this song, touched my soul and still does. I often still don't feel good enough and this song is very healing. I love her and hope to see her again soon.

I remember when this song first came out. I was at Walmart with my girlfriend and a couple friends of ours. We were in the electronics section, and I was drawn to the sound of one of the most beautiful songs I'd ever heard. The display was playing a snippet of Good Enough. It was my first experience with Sarah McLachlan's music. I just kept on listening to it over and over again. It touched my soul somehow and I knew I had to have that album. It's amazing how music can trigger memories from so far in the past.

the person singing the song is singing to the person that thinks they are not good enough to be loved. it is saying let me show you you ARE good enough to be treated good and be loved. it could also apply to people who think they are not because of past abuses and the self abuse many put themselves through. it is about saying this person will be there for them when no one else might be

So exactly correct. Very insightful and inspired of you to see and then speak of what you have seen. The real tragedy is when the one who is not good enough has no one to turn to, no one there to share the burden. The spiral downward then continues. Hold out a hand to the ones you love, people. It does no harm and may possibly save a life.

I've been a fan of Sarah McLachlan for nearly 30 years - in Southeast Michigan we can get Canadian radio clearly, and Into the Fire just caught my attention right away. I know most of her music by heart from the first few notes. All that being said, I can't get through the first 30 seconds of Good Enough without tearing up. This song wrecks me.

Yes. her voice, her high lilting voice in everything she does, sort of reminiscent of Anita Baker, but very distinctively special in "Will You Remember," which I fell in love with, and then the musical motif was continued in "Angel," and "Sweet Surrender," though that's more of a k.d laing offering.

A special Thanks to my sister who dedicated this song to me in my teens. I will always remember this. This song really describes and says everything it is meant to say and everything I am still going through till this day. Eating disorders are no joke, I know. My cousin had an eating disorder and almost died ... now I do (tho mine is more minor but still no joke and harmful) so I understand you. I hope you find peace. This hits so hard for me though due mostly to my emotionally and mentally abusive parent. This parent didn't mean to but just couldn't handle a family my parents divorced when I was going into middle school. I thought it was my fault at first. My parents got 50/50 custody. Good parent who initiated divorce was only escape... every other week I was parenting 3 other kids, handling school, doing some of the parents work and house work. They are getting mental help now for Bipolar, ADHD, Panic disorder and Anxiety most I got from them but am handling better then I think he is. Therapists and good parent agree but I never felt like enough to them. Still it is hard but thank you Sarah.
@SublimeAmiga
@SublimeAmiga 13 жыл бұрын
A lot of people have the wrong perspective about abusive parents. When you have an abusive parent they use their power to make their spouse feel like they aren't good enough. This causes them to believe it after so long and it isn't easy for them to leave. If you know someone that is a victim, tell them you are there for them, and only once. Give them the option to get help. But don't cause them to stop talking to you because they will defend their partner until they see the truth.

I’ve only recently learned of this song. And I replay it quite often now. I watched my father physically and emotionally abuse my mother. I hope she knows now that none of that had anything to do with her worth. This trauma has ruined and scarred me. My mother is the strongest woman I know, but still she struggles with knowing her worth. Blessed to still have her and love her each day. She is my hero. A survivor. A warrior.

To me, it's about a close friend who's always been there to try to help their friend through a rough relationship and rough life. I've never felt good enough in any situation but thank God for my best friend Tracy for always being there & making sure that I know that I am.

This song popped into my head today, so I looked it up. I had a 10 yr relationship end very dramatically and suddenly last fall. I am still trying to make sense of it all. This song helped.

In my opinion the only person that would be worthy of covering this song would be Natalie Merchant.

There are definitely mental pains which are anguishing enough that I would prefer physical pain to them. I feel that.

"What was the inspiration behind "Good Enough?" A lot of things. That song has been such an amazing experience for me because I've learned so much from it. There's so many different stories that I attach to it now. But it sort of came from, initially really missing my best girlfriend. It started out as fiction, about a couple in which the woman was pretty much alienated by just about everybody, because her husband was really abusive and domineering, which sort of somewhat mirrors my mother and father's relationship. And basically, I am the friend coming in, saying hey, you deserve more than this, why don't you come with me and I'll take care of you. The video that I'm going to do for that song is the first sort of dramatic narrative that I've done. Everything else has been pretty abstract, trying to find a parallel universe to describe it differently. But we're going to have a little girl, a man and woman, and a friend, possibly an imaginary friend. We're going to look at the relationship between the little girl and her friends and also between the mother and the little girl. And there's quite a bit of alienation from the father, who's been behind the scenes the whole time anyway." -- from an interview from Sarah McLachlan.
