Thanks for these demos, especially the encouragement to just keep painting. I am really needing that today! There’s a huge lesson at the end of the first painting. It was looking a little dark and then you added more dark contrast on the sand and it was as if you turned the lights on! Suddenly the lights on the water really popped. So sometimes achieving light is about going even darker, which is sort of counterintuitive. 🤔

Re-watching this demo to review your tips. Excellent instruction, Sarah! Having Sta-Wet palette paper and sponge has been a game changer for me with gouache. Getting used to the colour shift as it dries and that it reactivates layers below is definitely tricky, but now use that to my advantage.

Nice work. I’m just branching out into gouache and find that I overwork my paintings with too much detail. I’m going to borrow your use of a large brush to lay in the the initial shapes. I love that you explain what you’re doing and you’re reasoning behind it. Looking forward to whatever else you decide to share. Much appreciated.

Very nice. I have to admit I'm nervous about starting with gouache. Oils was my medium and on top of that I haven't painted for years. Starting in again, being rusty, with a new medium that's difficult and works completely differently than what I'm used to is going to be a challenge. Any advice?
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 4 жыл бұрын
I feel you. But honestly painting with gouache often feels like painting with oils as it blends, except it dries faster. If you work wet into wet it feels so similar. Go check out Mike Hernandez (squatchgouache on Instagram) and you'll see how it looks like oil too!

What is the white thing your paint is on? Is that just a piece of plastic or stay wet paper? Also i notice you use gouache from the tube. If u don’t use all that you squeeze out what do u do w it? I recently started gouache and I squeezed them into pans to dry like watercolor and now I’m wishing I hadn’t.

If you check out my most recent gouache videos you can see I use a sealed gouache palette now, it’s much more convenient. But yea sometimes I use a tray with gouache from the tube, especially if it’s a limited palette

I really like your use of the paper and (I guess) sponge for a palette. Can you use the colors again or do you start with a fresh pallet?
@SarahBurnsStudio

If it dries completely I will replace the colors. But I can enclose the sponge and colors in a sealable palette and save them for days.

I have a few pads of canvas paper, in the past I’ve used this paper for mixed media work. I think it’s sold as a paper for acrylics, I wonder if it would be good for gouache..
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 4 жыл бұрын
In my experience, gouache doesn’t do well on a surface that is shiny / glossy at all. So if the canvas paper is matte or has some tooth to it, I’m sure it would be fine!

Dang, sooo pretty. You inspire my journey into gouache. I have a question for you. When you were in the states where did you get your Holbein paints from? I have picked up a few from a local art supply store in Madison, WI and they are M Graham. On that note I have read from other artists that when using those in the field the honey in them attracts ants. Would like to get a set of Holbein and perhaps Winsor & Newton. Anyway....love your videos...only do KZfaq and Instagram.

That's wonderful to hear Toni! I got my paints from an art store in Denver called Meininger. It's like a candy store for artists! They even let you try stuff out before you buy it. I will point out that after using the holbeins for over a year, I am starting to shift away from them. The older they get the more "stiff" they get right out of the tube. They are extremely opaque but I worry about their shelf life. I have a few W&N colors that so far are staying very creamy. I haven't tried any other brands and I'm curious about them.

@@SarahBurnsStudio I used Windsor and Newton for years, years ago when I painted birds in gouache. Loved it. Moved on to other mediums, acrylic and oil, and eventually they all dried out, but it took some time to do so!!

@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 4 жыл бұрын
I've used the blue tape for years, on nearly every type of paper. It doesn't rip it. With most tapes, you have to wait for the paper to 100% dry before removing, and if it still rips it, try using a hairdryer to heat it up before peeling.
