I love the plein air version much more! I think it captured more of the spirit and wind from the scene! I love how the pink is peaked through and the brushstrokes are full of excitement.

Beautiful! I love the side-by-side comparisons. I think after seeing both videos, I'm partial to the plein air version. Feels like it has more gesture to me. Also, I got jealous of your large water bucket!! I totally need something bigger than a mason jar!

Once again, you give me courage toward taking that step out the door with my paints. As I watch you, and see that you work through obstacles and produce such lovely works of art, it has given me more courage. Just starting goauche. Have been doing watercolor, successfully, using many of the best watercolorists on KZfaq. Love your videos, production, scenes you pick, and that you work small. Never thought of the combination of watercolor and goauche. Larry, Houston

Hello and thanks for sharing these two beautiful paintings. I have done pen/ink and water color in sketch books. No, you don't want to see them, mostly embarrassing! I am starting with gouache, just received my set of paints, not even swatched them yet. Watching your tutorials for technics. Great painting 🖌️🎨and very inspiring. Cheers from across the pond✌️🌹🌺🌼 Q: on the 2nd painting, does the ocean in the middle passed the waves look a little concave? Wouldn't it look better with a more of a horizontal and level with horizon brush strokes?

Watching both these videos was extremely helpful to me; I paint plein air when it's not too hot (so summer is mostly out), but love doing it in spring and fall when things are changing so much. I don't live in a scenic area so have to look for beauty in less dramatic landscapes LOL! What I've found is that I RARELY produce something I love in plein air -- I tend to focus too much on detail and just trying to capture what's out there before light changes (yeah, right!). They rarely look like what I LOVE producing inside, which tends to be more dramatic in both color and contrast -- somehow I just can't let loose enough to do that outside. (And up to now I've been doing mostly pastel...). A question for you, though -- I'm just going to start doing gouache, have played some with watercolor but think I'll like the forgiveness more of gouache (I am NOT good at planning out every single little thing). Why do you prefer hot press over cold press surfaces for gouache?? I know for WC hot press is better for details, but didn't know how it affects gouache. ANOTHER QUESTION -- I've read that adding a drop or so of food-grade glycerine into your gouache pans when you make them helps to keep the gouache fresher longer -- do you do that? if so, does it really work? THANKS SO MUCH -- I can relate to these videos so much!! (And sometime I'm going to look up WHY you moved to Scotland....and what it's like living there...)

I love them both, but especially love the color palette in the second painting! I’ve been doing digital art more lately, which I love, but it’s definitely different and I find I don’t use colors that are as bold because I have more time to think about it. 😂 Great video as always!

I suggest you were too critical of your initial plein air painting. While your studio version does provide alternative perspective, both offer atmospheric elements that are representative of various lighting, different days. Enjoyed both. Thank you!

I like the original still. The distant cliff is just standing up too straight. A bit more definition on the slope and top to brake the shape And middle cliff needed a little more hump and lighter colors like your second pic and I would love it. But its only to my eyes your work is always lovely. I get to frightened to paint on my own I had a bad experience so it put me off a bit. How do you cope with creepy encounters.

Sarah, how did you feel about the linear pattern in your white splatter? It seems this would be ideal for a painting done from a water-level perspective, representing a splash in front of the viewer. Did the pattern, here, either enhanced or degraded the effect you wanted (or neither)? I find splatter a difficult effect to control. Thanks.
