Such a moving song, and yes, it is a true story. From the Irish Post, "As many people know, the heart wrenching-ballad Grace tells the true story of Grace Gifford and Joseph Plunkett, who were married in Kilmainham Gaol hours before he was executed by firing squad for his role in the Easter Rising of 1916." If you search the Easter Rising in Ireland in 1916 you will get an idea of what it was, and sometimes still is, the reality of being Irish. Luke Kelly was one of the members, I particularly love his singing, and recommend that you listen to a bit of his work. Grace is a sad song, I type these words to you with tears on my face. But happy in my heart to know that this old tune is still working its magic, and forever remembers this love story it was written ion remembrance for.

As an Englishman I find it strange that people never mention the fact the Joseph Plunkett and many of his 13 comrades went to their graves believing that they were hated by the Irish people, which is very sad. People also forget to mention that Thomas MacDonagh was Grace's brother-in-law and married to Grace's sister Muriel and was executed 24hrs before Joseph, so Grace actually lost 2 men in her life over that 24 hrs, not just 1.

Sarah , it is absolutely a true story, about an Irish poet and patriot Joseph Plunkett who was executed by the British for his leadership role in the Dublin Easter Rising of 1916. Plunkett was one of the seven men who signed the Proclamation, and for that he was condemned by a British military tribunal to death by firing squad. The Grace of the title was Joseph's fiance Grace Gifford who was brought into the prison just hours before her true love's execution, along with a priest and they were married. They spent just fifteeen minutes together under supervision, and she was then escorted out of the prison. Although her marriage was so crueely cut short, and she was quite young, Grace would never remarry, and would die still widowed in 1969

This is the true story of Joseph Plunkett who fought for Irish freedom and was executed by the British. The reference to blood upon the rose is a poem Joseph wrote: "I see his blood upon the rose And in the stars the glory of his eyes, His body gleams amid eternal snows, His tears fall from the skies. I see his face in every flower; The thunder and the singing of the birds Are but his voice-and carven by his power Rocks are his written words. All pathways by his feet are worn, His strong heart stirs the ever-beating sea, His crown of thorns is twined with every thorn, His cross is every tree.”

Lovely song! 😊 The song was written in 1985 by brothers Frank and Seán O'Meara and is about artist Grace Gifford who married Joseph Mary Plunkett in the chapel at Kilmainham Gaol just hours before he was executed by a firing squad in 1916.

Hi Sarah, it was a pleasure to see your reaction to the Dubliners and AC-DC. Maybe I have something from the same era for you. I am German, now 60 years old. When the Berlin Wall fell, I immediately traveled from Dresden (formerly East Germany) to Hamburg to visit my relatives. On that evening, "The Pogues," an Irish folk-rock band, were playing. They were a mix of Irish folk music and punk, and the instrumentation was fantastic with a tin whistle, banjo, mandolin, and accordion. The whole crowd was jumping (pogoing). I've only experienced something like that live again at an AC-DC concert. Perhaps this is something for you. I would recommand "If I should fall from grace....."

Now there is someone who is unaware of their Irish history. ENGLISH what are you talking about? Not to mention that the local Dublin Irish population swore at and spat on the rebels as they were being arrested, so Joe and his 13 comrades went to their graves thinking that they were hated by the Irish people. Now that is heartbreaking.

Joseph Plunkett was one of the Easter Rising in April 1916. He was dying of cunspuntion (tuberculosis). He was impersonal in Kilmarnam jail. He married Grace in the chapel, then they got to spend one hour in his cell. He was shot by a British firing squad the next morning. She never remarried.
