What an amazingly beautiful video - and SO helpful!! Im a 'hobby seamstress', and my current project is sewing a christening dress. Love this!!! I just found a few boxes in my mom's stash from the days when she had sequins and beads in her stores (in late 50's very early 60's) and was wondering what to do with them. I've been thinking of putting together a book to memorialize all the things she had in the store ( a fabric/notions store where she also made wedding dresses and clothing for her clientele) I am definitely going to give this a try. I also remember the twobl beaded outfits she made us for the Polish parade. Every year I was excited to wear it!!! The bolero was beaded, the skirt was decorated with different colored ribbons and of course my favorite puffy blouse. Sadly, I only have a black and white picture that you can barely see the beautiful embroidery.

Wow 😲 that was great watching your sewing, you are a professional. This is the first sewing video I've watched on KZfaq. I was telling my daughter it's very therapeutic you feel very calm watching someone sew,..it's like taking a tranquilizer. 🤤 Anyway; I did learn some things and I have a lot of beaded dresses laying around this house that my daughter wants me to sew beads on. But these beads that need to be sewn on are long beads they're like maybe an eighth of an inch long possibly but I am not having an easy time sewing them down. They poke up at one end. I thought it would be easy but it's not proving to be easy,.. do you have a video where you sew down those longer tube beads? I would sure appreciate hearing back from you or somebody that reads my message if they know :-) Sincerely Tammie 🙋🏼

I am repairing beaded dresses that are solid beads, some of them have a design to the pattern, but what I'm wondering is how can I put the material flat enough to sew it? I can't put the beaded dress into a circle holder that keeps the material tight that would ruin the beads. Any suggestions?

A natural fabric such as cotton or a tightly woven linen (or a blend of both) is great for this kind of embroidery Harriet. If you aren't working on clothes consider also using a backing fabric in a cotton to give you some extra stability.

@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery

You can get specific needles and threads just for beading (beading needles have a thin eye and are usually extra long) but if you don't have these then use a fine embroidery needle (a number 10 or 12 works well) and you can wax an ordinary sewing thread with bees wax to reduce the wear on the thread.

Excellent. I have a couple of questions: 1) Do you use a fusible interfacing on the back as a stabilizer? 2) I notice you put your starting knots on the front of the fabric. Wouldn’t these go on the back? Thanks.
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery 2 жыл бұрын
1) I don't but his would work Catherine. I just tend to avoid anything we glue on it but this would be good if you wanted to stitch onto clothing 2) The knots are waste knots and get cut off. Check out my video on starting and finishing your threads!

The higher the number the smaller the diameter of bead Becky. A number 8 is 2.5mm, a number 11 is 1.8mm for example so perhaps start nearer the larger end and try these first. Beads come in hundreds of shapes and sizes so start with the basic round seed beads and you can experiment from there.

Yes. Go to the beginning of the video Joyce and I explain about the types of thread. I talk about needles at 2 mintues but basically you need to be able to slide the bead over the eye so make sure the needle is fine enough to do this with the beads you are using.

Would be interested in your thoughts on the technique used in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hMedlcRmnb3QqY0.html which I came upon in my travels through KZfaq. Obviously it only works for elastic thread, and if that's wool then the beads must have very wide holes, especially for the eye. But the results are inspiring. Incidentally, I'm currently working on a perhaps somewhat unconventional beginner's embroidery project, and would love to share it when it's done. Meanwhile, I've been enjoying your videos and getting ideas.
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery 4 жыл бұрын
That's not elastic thread Adrian, just normal embroidery cotton by the look of it. She's putting them down in the same way that I do in this video. We are going to do another Stitching Around the World video (check them out here if you haven't seen them: kzfaq.info/sun/PLC2TZFIW8ZoNnh8ASYu2-Q9vkaVgypm-Y) so perhaps you can show us what you are making in that?
@apm77
@apm77 4 жыл бұрын
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery Thanks for your reply, but I am confused! The thread she uses looks very thick, and contains undulations that show it is made from twisted fibres like wool. Between 0:30 and 1:00, she puts between 25 and 30 beads on the thread at once, and then goes back and adds stitches to pull the thread onto the curved design line. You do something similar on the with the 'e' in your bead lettering video, but only putting down a few beads at a time. It is not clear whether you would put down more beads if you were working with a gentler curve. Incidentally, that link doesn't work, but my project involves embroidering a cushion cover with a combination of pompoms, buttons, and wool-stitched petal outlines in a regular geometric design. For the petals I'm using a whipped running stitch (which I think gives it an organic-looking frilly edge), with a backstitch at the tip to give it a symmetric point. The cushion cover is pre-made so it's a little more challenging than embroidering onto flat cloth, especially near the edges. I am up to the challenge, though! Thank you once again.
