I love seeing other college students so informed and responsible about raising a puppy! I adopted a 5y/o lab right before my freshman year of college and am about to get a puppy (sophomore now). This is great advice for people looking into getting a dog!!

This was so informative! I'm only a junior in high school but I have a 3 month old Aussie who I got on my own and I still pay all her bills and food, and I'm just nervous about being able to afford everything in college!

Hey Lizzie!!!! Oh my goodness! Wow you got yourself a pup already! Good for you, taking on the challenge of motherhood already!!! Hehe. And listen, do not be nervous about when college hits. Enjoy THIS phase right now, enjoy TODAY, and your junior year. WORRYING about 2 years from now, does not add ANYTHING to your life. So anytime you start to feel like the .... anxiousness about how you will pay for the pup just quickly REMIND yourself, wait, worrying NOW about 2 years from now does NOTHING. You will figure it out THEN, in the same way you will figure it out NOW. THEN enjoy senior year, work hard to pay those bills, and remember to just enjoy the pup. Nobody wants to get to realize when their doggy is 5 years old like.... oh wow, we made it! there was no point in being nervous! SO YEAH those are some thoughts that came to mind, that i would really appreciate if someone told me when i first had Nala the first year. -sarah

Gonna get a mini schnauzer puppy this summer. I totally agree with your points and also that most people don't speak dog and do horrible training that they think their dog will pick up and be perfect. Reading about dog psychology and behaviour (and therefore also proper training techniques and pos reinforcement) is imo a MUST DO before getting a pupper.

This was a great video! Got me researching all about dogs and its great how you noted about the finances because I really did not know what to expect! I was wondering do you think it would be a little better to say wait like 2-3 months after moving in and acclimating to an apartment and then getting a dog than going all in and moving into a new apartment with a new dog? Just some thoughts I had cause I'm planning on moving in but expect it to take some time to adjust
@SarahandKaitlyn
@SarahandKaitlyn 3 жыл бұрын
Yessss I would definitely say adjust first. I moved in with my puppy but I was already used to OUR system for 2 months before. My personal experience with moving in is that it’s pure chaos and I think it would, on a very real & practical level, be best for YOU to just wait like you said, 2-3 months. Heck if you’re all settled in within a month and you feel SETTLED and ready to create a system then go for it! But dogs do pick up on energy and if you get a new doggy while also dealing with the hustle and bustle of getting a home together it just makes things.... HARDER! you could do it (obv, we can make anything work) but this is my personal real advice!!! Thank you so so much for your feedback and nice comment! -Sarah

I have ADHD, so I really struggle to care for myself independently, so I'm really worried about going off to university. However, my family dogs have always helped me keep a routine, and weirdly enough help me study, because I do a thing called 'energy breaks' and they get a 10 minute or so walk/run every half hour during my study hours, because it helps me to focus and reduce my social anxiety when I go out. (I'm not really interested in college parties and stuff). For these reasons, I really want a dog in University, but I live in the UK so a lot of places are no pets allowed and the cost of living is so insane, so although pet prices are roughly the same, rent and food bills certainly are not. I don't know whether it is worth it, but getting my own dog has always been an absolute dream of mine, and dogs are just my everything and I don't know how I'll live without one. It's a really hard decision for me, honestly.

What are your thoughts about getting a dog and having roommates? I am worried about finding good roommates and don’t know many people at the college I will be attending.
@SarahandKaitlyn
@SarahandKaitlyn 3 жыл бұрын
my thoughts are that it is totally doable! you will have to be more responsible and intentional because dogs make messes way quicker than humans lol so just know that beforehand! i find myself trying to be very respectful of my roommates so that my dog isn't ruining their experience! also, lots of people don't mind rooming with people who have dogs, so long as you got it under control! make sure to be honest with the potential roommates. say you want your dog to be free around the house at times, but they are always welcome to tell you if the dog is getting annoying, etc. just make sure to be honest and also know that you are signing up for MORE responsibility! it's an amazing blessing but it is MORE responsibility. hope that answers some! -sarah

hello I'm planning on getting a dog for college because I'm going to be alone in a new place and I feel like a dog will help me do have any ideas on which dog would be good i'm thinking of getting a big dog.
@SarahandKaitlyn
@SarahandKaitlyn 3 жыл бұрын
hey! ok so i want to tell you, big dogs require a lot of attention. Every day I take my dog out for at-least 2-3 hours of STRAIGHT exercise/training. So, if you're wanting a big dog, first you want to make sure that you're ready to devote such intention and time to a dog. Because they really become "bad dogs" if they are not being exercised. (When i say 'bad' it's not really their fault, it's ours, but people think their dog is bad when really they lack exercise and attention so the dog goes crazy and runs away, etc). So if you're wanting a job in college... ya better make sure that you get a break every 4 hours and then you can run home to feed/exercise/take them out. Big dogs that are good for beginners are labs & golden retrievers. However, they do shed a lot lol. So if you're getting a big dog, i would recommend observing their energy levels (droopy, sleepy, chill, not going yapping too much) because they do tend to keep their original energy when they are older. (my dog had high energy haha.... lucky me). Let me know if you need more info! -sarah

@@SarahandKaitlyn This is very true, also want to point out how important training is to do mental exercises as they can be allot more tiring than physical (plus leads to a more well behaved pup), doing things such as feeding it's food in a kong when you leave can be helpful for tiring it out. I'd say if you're hoping for a bigger dog that is better at being left alone a dog such as a lurcher/greyhound comes to mind as they are usually by nature more lazy dogs from what I've heard and more apartment friendly, just make sure to research the dog breed and view the parents to give yourself an idea of the temperament before buying one esp since some dog breeds can be prone to separation anxiety (crate training and not giving your dog attention as you leave or enter your house even if painful at first can be really good at preventing this). Good luck with getting your dog :)

@@becky0007 don't be afraid to leave your adult dog for 8-10 hours. Just take them for a walk before and after and tire them afterwards. They will sleep through most of that time alone anyway. Dont use pee pads(i would use them only because of medical condition). Dogs that go on pee pads often start peeing in your place as they get it mixed up, and you don't want that.
