I find it amusing that people who reached out to help Tsuki, the moon (Kuroo, Bokuto, Akaashi) are represented by nocturnal animals. Nekoma are cats and Fukurodani are owls. Haikyuu`s allegories always fascinate me so much.

When Asahi is asked how he's handling Hinata's talent creeping up on him, I think it's a good moment showing that Tsukki is subtly searching for his own answer. He doesn't know how to handle Hinata and wanted the opinion of someone else in a similar position. He tries to play it off in his usual manner, but Yamaguchi notices. Asahi's answer is that he won't back down and claim his place on the court, but Tsukki doesn't see himself as able to do that, so it's not the answer he wants. I also really like the scene where Tsukki stops running for the symbolism of him saying "go ahead of me" and Yamaguchi is sad but does so. Yamaguchi wants to help, but there's nothing he can do. He can't run for Tsukki. It's such a short moment, yet it encapsulates their whole situation.

And it's a flip in virtual storytelling. Ever since S1, Yamaguchi is drawn/animated almost always behind Tsukki. But now that Yamaguchi has a clearer goal than Tsukki, Yamaguchi is now ahead.

Awesome insight. Tsukki is a tough nut to crack, and he seems to need to grow without accepting any unsolicited help. I love that the team respects that even though it must be so frustrating.

I only noticed it with this reaction because of Adam talking about it, but Hinata actually did the smart thing by just staying out of the way and not doing anything (almost) twice in this episode - first in that play where he did not interfere with Asahi's spike, even though the set was a bit short, and then later when Yamaguchi low-key sought his help with the whole Tsukki situation, having seen how Hinata managed to help Kageyama and Yachi by saying the right things. This was definitely more subconscious on Hinata's part as he clearly has no idea what Tsukki's deal is, but I like seeing him step back for once and also ask Yamaguchi the right question (what would /he/ tell Tsukki).

10:19 This might be the perfect time to mention this now... For context, in Japan, there is a separate distinction between what English subs would often refer to as the "head coach" and a simple "coach". The "head coach" is always referenced by the word "kantoku", and as far as I know, this is always a position held by a tenured faculty or staff member of the school. Meanwhile, if someone is simply referred to as "kochi" (it's really just the word "coach" being said in japanese), they're one of two things: a volunteer assistant to the "kantoku" which is the case for Keishin, or a tenured staff just below in ranking from the head coach in the case of large teams. Karasuno's official head coach is actually Takeda since Ukai Keishin isn't a faculty or staff member of the school. This is further evidenced by the fact that only Takeda is able to call for timeouts during official matches. But the real reason I mentioned this is because Ukai Keishin will always be referred to as "kochi" or "Ukai-san". Meanwhile, Ukai Ikkei is always referred to as "Ukai-kantoku", who is being referenced in this particular dialogue.

Second season has to be one of my favorites. For one we dive so deep into the characters, in the first episodes through Yacchi but also in the training arc we get to really see the difference between 3rd years and 1st years in terms of maturity. In this episode Kuroo talking to Daichi just to make sure everything is ok or Asahi talking to Tsukki demonstrate how they are really grown ups in comparisson to the young ones.

Another great reaction, guys! Last time I couldn't tell you but Furudate (the mangaka/creator) played volleyball during junior and highschool, but to be able to convey all of that while studying and getting better at drawing manga, must have taken ALOT. I respect the autor cause the life of a mangaka is so hard (Bakuman is an amazing manga/anime that depicts what's like to be a mangaka). Making pro athletes, coaches and amateurs enjoy and understand a sport in such detailed level, for me, it's incredible.

I smiled so hard this episode especially when Sarah was making hard eye contact while Adam was working through his Tsukki theories! So much about the characters’ personalities and dynamics in this episode, and I love how the writer and animators took the time to carefully show so many aspects of it, including how one does or does not eat watermelon. I could write a thesis on each episode and I’m sure I’m not alone, including you guys! I’m not good at physical activity and volleyball was something to suffer through during PE, but this anime and the love you have for the sport and the show are so enlightening and motivating. Love the brief aside about growth spurts and how they can hurt and sap your energy.

I know his opinion on over-training is more of a character arc thing but I kinda empathize with it. I feel like a lot of people think that going crazy and training as much as possible is how you get good but it just leads them to burn out. Sure you might be able to do it for a week or a month or even a year but if you're doing more than you can handle eventually your mind or body will give out. What really matters is consistency. If you practice guitar for an hour a day for a year you're going to be a lot better than if you practiced 12 hours a day for a month.

@@adamschulz9475 Absolutely true. I was hesitant to mention it because there's obviously more to the Tsuki story and this is literally a training camp but I felt like it was worth mentioning because it's an aspect I never see addressed in anime. Everyone always seems to have unlimited motivation and energy but in real life that can be a reckless thing. I'm reminded of White Album 2 where at one point the main character practices guitar like 12 hours a day for a week and then 24 hours straight before playing at his high school talent show. In reality your fingers would be hamburger and you'd be so exhausted you wouldn't be able to make it through a song.

I love everything about this episode, but I think I especially like how we get to see Yamaguchi more and how he's very observant when it comes to Tsukki. When Ukai was talking about the powerful serve and block combo we saw Yamaguchi pay attention in the background and right afterwards he asks Tsukki about his blocking and maybe training on his own. I think with how much he's practicing his serve he was probably thinking about Ukai's explanation in relation to himself and Tsukishima. I especially like how he approaches Hinata at the end to ask what he would say. I love that because it acknowledges that Hinata is pretty good at making connections with people and saying the right things to motivate them (on purpose or not) and I think it's interesting that Yamaguchi noticed that and even thinks Hinata would know better how to talk to Tsukki despite he himself being way closer to him. Interesting stuff all around. Also! Despite the way Tsukishima talked when he was asking Asahi about Hinata, I think it says a lot that he even asked in the first place! I'm looking forward to the next episode a lot!

He's observant because he's childhood friends with him, to this point he knows what Tsukki has been through (and most of us know now, but Adam, for example, doesnt) so from Yamaguchi's perspective the story is slightly different than from the others'
@adamschulz9475
@adamschulz9475 3 ай бұрын
I think this interaction with Yamaguchi is under appreciated. This is his best friend. He looks up to him and you can see what the dynamic is between them based on their history. I think this was a big risk for him calling him out. Approaching Hinata gives him another datapoint. He wants to push his friend to reach his potential (which I love) but not piss off his friend to much. It's a tricky balance.

@@adamschulz9475 I agree, one of these days we'll need to talk about all those great guys who are underappreciated or rather overlooked such as Yamaguchi, Akaashi, Iwazumi or even Daichi who are so so important to the story for the support and the emotional balance they give to other characters. They are there and we love them, but they're never the subject of the conversation and they should be. They are the pillars of their teams for the role they play in other people's lives.

@SarahPavanVolleyball Sarah, excellent job biting your tongue on so many things- I couldn't do that, and was talking at my screen lol. Watching any show you love with a partner who hasn't seen it, especially one that has so many well written characters that take so long to develop, is reallyyyy tough. Lots of respect for that. There are times when I can tell you want to say something and get frustrated you can't (and I'm like 99% sure Adam knows this), but remind your boo that the frustration isn't at him. It's almost more eagerness for things to fall into place than frustration. Love the ep as always. 12K views in under 12H- HEY HEY HEYYYYY! Movie P1 coming soon. Tsukishima is among my favorite characters. So excited for this entire arc. My favorite part of season two!! Thanks for another interesting video, I didn’t notice Hinata’s growth through that conversation in particular - i just saw it as a manifestation of his unique personality. Nice catch! Otherwise, It’s cool to see his change not just on the court (more obvious) but off the court also. Everyone’s changing!!! One of my favorite parts of Haikyuu is acknowledging that teams are often made up of verrrry different people. To succeed, you have to tolerate, grow to LIKE, or compromise and/or change in some areas. Seeing the boys grow up through volleyball is fascinating and one of my favorite parts of Haikyuu as a show and manga. I hope you guys continue to enjoy its charm, whether a first watch or a rewatch. The more you watch, the more you notice, and the better it gets. That’s usually how it is for a good piece of art.

This is always a dance with players. You need to understand them as people on a human level. Why are you here? Are you unmotivated because this just isn's a top priority (this is the hardest/impossible to fix). Do you just not have the background or experience to know what the expectations are? Are you afraid to fail, insecure or don'd understand the expectations? DO you think you are better than the people around you? When you are starting with athletes, it's trial and error. You try different things and see what the reaction is. Sometimes it's just sitting someone on the bench.

To Adam, this episode is very important for the series because from this episode onwards most of the people who never liked Tsukki or didn't really care for him (and I talk from experience, trust me) started to love him. We see him more clearly, not just as the guy who's just a jerk and never puts more than 50% of himself in the things he does (because if you look at his dynamics with other people he's just as bad at socializing as he is at giving his all to the sport, like he doesn't want to be "seen"). Tsukkishima starts growing on from us, and to this day, having seen everything but the movie yet, he's one of my favourite characters. I can't tell you more, just, wait and see. WAIT AND SEE. Also, these kids are rivals in the court, whether at official competitions, practice matches, training camps... but once the game is over, they are friends, they are building bonds. They are just teenagers in school, but maybe when they graduate they'll play volleyball in college, or they will be picked by a scout for professional teams... your teammates could be one day your rivals, your rivals could be your teammates, so for the time being, outside the court, they're kids making friends, goofing around, sharing moments and simply making memories. One day Kageyama migh be on the same team as Kuroo (hypotetically speaking) and they might share these childhood memories i the locker room "Remember that pain in the ass that was Hinata? I've heard he's playing with Bokuto now, can you imagine being near those two all day?"

i kind of relate to Tsukki's part when he says " Why put so much into it its just a club". Of course i get that its so important to them because i'm kind seeing everything from the sideline. But just like how someone who's putting everything doesn't understand why i doesn't understand it i do not understand it at all.

I feel like Adam as a player is very much like Kuroo here. Like, he is the one that likes to poke at the rival and get in their heads.

Well, I was like Sarah with Tsukki, not liked him... But in this chapter, when he thinks about not giving all because if you not get what you want you will feel more pain, finnally I could see him as a character and relate to him. Good job mangaka, it seems he knows well his characters and when he show us them.

Video Start: Finally continuing to catch up, am back in civilization Forgetting is OK Adam Episode Start: Roll credits The classic of 3am leaving for travel sports Tsukki noticed too "Thats a cell tower" Country Bumpkins Shinezen has better climate Lev being a shit Will they be able to go no penalties? And we have the first mistake Moving targets are different Staring eyes TSK Splendidly sucking They are getting wrecked trying their new stuff They stealing plays All but Tsukki Crows do be crowing The author is great at having realistic high school sports Hina is sun Tsu is moon The duality of passion Hill running Suga walking the end of the hill Stuffed Being rude to food Lost every match, classic Karasuno Tsukki lacking the dedication? His team runs away and Kuro tutors Lev Tsukki with the shade Kuro knows how to throw it back though "Want some balls" Yachi does just want them to be friends Tsukki is the only one who seems to treat it more as a job than a hobby Because he has been awesome since the begining Sarah, only you hated him early Lev serve sucks Kuuro be like "one block" and is dope Pushes all the buttons Kuuro with the hand drop Tsukki pushing the buttons Kuuro having none of Tsukki's bull Baby bird is a great analogy "Its just a club" is such a realistic mentality Tsukki is not overly competetative Tsukki giving himself an out to avoid failure is SO relateable I am loving the Tsukki talk, and he is the guy who you don't see as needing more buy in since he is already doing it somewhat but would benefit tons More hill runs The girls have melon Kuuro is actually pretty aware and I like that he goes to apologize Older brother? Really good or really bad? Maybe he was really good in high school but not good enough for college, that would fit the "fail later after all the effort" comment Asahi is team dad, Suga is team mom Asahi so chill and relaxed about everything Also love his comments about they notice it the most is so aware Are we still on headband? Get over it Ukai noticing it is great, he doesn't need him to care more, just try harder He thought about it Love coach Nekomata's face after Asahi goes through the block And they still lost The rest of the team starting to feel it What would you say is such a great question He doesn't dislike the sport, but he doesn't love it I don't know if the tired is all an excuse, he can be tired and decide to rest rather than push himself. He doesn't need to treat the club like the most important thing Episode End: Oh they will totally win at least 1 I await prediction reactions Video End:

@@adamschulz9475 I was refering to when Sarah said that you don't like it when you can't figure someone out. Persistent people who try to figure me out usually get very frustated, even family members. A lack of expressing emotions and talking with only a few words is my guess. And I on the other hand, don't like it when people try to figure me out because of that reason. Looks like a point where we the opposite.

@@yeti112 "Figuring" someone out in my mind is more observing how they react in different situations. It's not really an overt effort or requiring people to say anything. It's being present when you are with people and paying attention :)

Talent is a bad translation. It's really skill, which Hinata definitely does not have much of. His natural talent is his athleticism and stamina.

As Adam points out, Tsukishima has the intelligence. Maybe it's a lack of confidence. He may not be making the most of it. This tendency is particularly common among Japanese. It is a culture where modesty and underestimating oneself are considered virtues. That is why I think there are many Japanese who are emotionally attached to Tuckey. Maybe Tuckey's analytical skills make him a good coach?
