If you're thinking of returning your iPhone 14 Pro for a 13 Mini, here's why: The 13 Mini has a smaller display and battery, but it also has a number of things that I love that that the 14 Pro doesn't have. So if you're in the market for an iPhone - or just want to save a little money - the 13 Mini is a great option! So much so, I went back AGAIN.

Had a 13 Mini…returned it. Thought it too small. Then, went back to the Apple Store one week later and bought another one. Glad I did. Missed the size after going back to my huge Motorola 6.8” slab of a phone. Mini is a gem. May not have the sales numbers, but the enthusiasm for this little phone is quite apparent amongst its happy owners. Thanks for the videos!

Steve Jobs was absolutely against making the iPhone bigger exactly for the reasons you cited. He took a lot of heat from the consumer and tech communities. I wish Apple continued with the mini models.

It’s interesting that he died after the iPhone 4 was released and before the 5 - which was slightly taller. And it’s all been pretty much bigger since then. Remember when small meant premium, before the social media and media consumption through mobile screens era?
@notforposers

@@TheTechPacker I do remember when smaller was premium haha. I also remember the original iPhone came with a dock, until a lot of these tech reviewers kept saying “I’ll never use this, idk why they include it?” I remember thinking stfu they’ll just start charging for it as an added accessory. Now we pay more and receive less... go figure.

Steve Jobs wouldn't have understood the whole social media craze or gaming craze that's taken over the use of phones, and even if he did he would have made the phone bigger too. It's a space constraint that makes the phone bigger and he would have understood this. Nothing would have been different, except maybe we'd have been getting tech in the iphones long before Android phones... but he's no longer with us so we got stuck with being a few years behind other devices.

After my 12pro was stolen, I switched to the 13 mini, a few weeks later the 14s were released. Even though I love to purchase the latest and greatest, I've not had the itch to move up to the 14. I love the 13mini's size and balance, the way the wallet fits flush with the mag case, and the cameras are adequate for my needs. I plan to keep this for a while except if apple releases another mini.

@@TheTechPacker Indeed! The extended holiday return policy did help a bit with the decision. Rocking a Midnight 13 Mini this time! The Mini I sold to try the 14 Pro series was Blue. I wound up in a similar situation-- went from a broken 12 mini to the 14 pro this past week after my mini took an unfortunate leap. The 14 pro is gorgeous and was meant to be a moment to treat myself to something big and fancy, but after a few hours of lugging the huge thing around I had a good cry over how much I missed my tiny, super light, and super cute mini! It is just SO ridiculously heavy. I can imagine if I'm goofing around on my phone in bed, all I'd have to do is drop it on my face and come out with a broken nose or a black eye. Maybe both. It just does not feel good to handle, even less so in my tiny hands, and it makes me wonder if they bothered to get feedback on how these absolute bricks feel to hold and use day to day... I've gone and gotten my mini's screen replaced and I went right back to using it, but I'm not so excited about the prospect of returning the pro. In fact, I'm hoping it grows on me like a fungus. I do like a lot of what it has to offer...it's just...heavy enough to be a weapon, which isn't a feature I particularly want out of my phones. I'm sure it's handy in some cases, but if I'm using a chunky phone to defend myself, I'm probably in a rough spot anyhow. Many thanks for your video, it helped me feel quite a bit better knowing I'm not the only one struggling with the mini to pro switch!

Thank you! I've happily held on to my iPhone 6 since 2015, I think? -- and figured it was about time to upgrade. I just want to be able to take pictures in the dark, basically, and be able to use a few apps that my 6 won't support. For whatever reason I started shopping around on Amazon, found the refurbished 13 Minis for T-Mobile at $479, and thought it was time. Every single review I watch, people love their 13 Minis. Mine arrives on Tuesday! I tend to keep my stuff in good condition over the long haul and keep it going until it dies -- "drive it into the ground," as Click & Clack The Tappitt Brothers used to say. My 2010 Honda Element (which I bought new) now has 308,000 miles. Going for a million.

The iPhone SE (2020) was my favorite smartphone of all time. I’d still be using it as my daily device if it weren’t for the battery now needing to be serviced. The size and performance of it was perfect. I did think long and hard about getting a 13 mini to replace it but ended up getting a 13 pro. I am exactly in the same predicament! There is something just too top heavy in the iPhone 14 Pro, especially if you add a cover and lens protector. I think many of us (perhaps slightly older folks, and especially those coming from a smaller form factor like an SE or Mini) with a more practical use case (phone is less of social media tool and more of a call and stream whilst on the move device) are finding the balance of the new 14 Pro just too awkward for comfort on the go. I too struggle with the pocket discomfort. I do enjoy the ease of viewing and typing on a large screen, but the dynamic island is frankly a let-down, always on display is kept off as it drains battery and I too feel like I am going to drop the phone whenever I use only one hand. I am still on the fence as to the cameras too. I bet those who really value film and photo quality can make a strong case for this phone - and my old SE was certainly nothing to shout home about in either of the those departments… I am giving myself another 24hours, but the mini 13 could be the way to go given the cameras are a big step up from the SE. Or, I’ll just learn to adapt to the 14 Pro as I guess we all can do given a little time, knowing that it should be future proof for some time. Gosh, if it could just loose 40 grams and a bit of that top heavy feel (oh, and bring back Touch ID!)- It would then be perfect! Don’t tell me that I have just described the iPhone 15…!?

I always loved the bigger screen phones for meda comsumption and the real estate. I thought just going to the regular 13 i would be disappointed. However after having the phone for more then a week i realized that its alot more compact for me and works well for me esepcially one handed. So i don't miss it all that much and losing out on that one extra camera lense is not a deal breaker for me as i can tell the differnce in sound and camera quality from the previous phone.

I got a 13 mini to replace my 8 plus which was around 5 years old, the battery went out on it and didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a battery when I could chip in just a few more hundred dollars and get a brand new phone. I've had my 13 mini for about 3 months now and I love it. It's strange how so many people just write off the mini series as bad or small. It's easy to hold and I never drop it due to being able to easily grip it with one hand as these bigger models basically require both hands. It's easy to fit in your pocket and doesn't take up space no matter where or what you put it in. If you're somebody who just needs to call,text and have basic apps like say Fox News,The Weather Channel, a local news channel app and basic social media aps maybe a few games then you are perfect for a phone like the 13 mini. Maybe if people are the type who use their phone for hours and hours daily then perhaps battery is a issue for you. Since that is the top compliant I see, but personally I've never had that issue and the size of it was the REASON I bought the mini, I think the people who bashed the mini series for it's size missed the whole mini part but I digress.

There are two options that you can change, first one is Display zoom -> larger text and the other one is Text size -> upped the scale with one step. Now it feels exactly like my previous Xs, granted you lose a bit of content. But for me it makes it a lot easier to see, so it was a win win. Got used to it in a matter of hours

Hey there - thanks for writing. And welcome to the Apple fam :) I prob won't be posting a video about cases, as in NZ they tend to be pretty expensive, and as a small channel right now, I;m keeping expenses down. This is the one I use though, if that's helpful: www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MPPSGP03311/Spigen-iPhone-13-mini-54-Liquid-Crystal-Case-Cryst. You are so right. I upgraded from an iPhone 8 and went for the 14 pro. The Apple salesperson who waited on me was practically yelling at me saying I didn't need the pro and trying to push me to the 14. I agree that the pro is too heavy and wonder how I'm going to exercise with it, but I wanted all of the latest features. I still might return it though.

I've never had a premium device before, and only used Windows phones and Androids in the past, but I finally decided to jump ship and get 13 mini - and I am in love with it. The phone is the perfect size, and I honestly thought it would be even smaller when I saw the 5.4" spec for the screen, which goes to show it definetly isn't too small. I am only facing some battery drainage issues, but I'm guessing this is because I haven't optimized my notifications yet and leave the location services on.

Same as yourself. I’ve just got my 2nd iPhone 13 mini today, having felt my 14 pro max was too big and heavy. I marvelled at the size of it when I took it out of the box and familiarised myself with it weight and stature. But…I’m slightly alarmed at its battery life. It dropped 5% watching your video. It’s showing 100% battery health so I’ve either been spoiled by the 14 pro max battery or the battery health has been reset on this new to me, used 13 mini. I’ve got a genuine MagSafe Apple battery coming today but I do prefer to have my wallet attached to the back of my iPhone. I s😅till love the size, power and value of the 13 mini though.

I have the same exact feelings of switching back as I am in the same boat where I sold my 13 mini and bought 14 pro without being impressed vs the comfort I lost. 120hz screen I guess is the only crucial thing. P.s. went to store to check 13 mini - unfortunatelly its totally Impossible to back to an iPhone with 60hz screen after seeing performance on 120hz screen. Dunno why exactly but with iPhones 60hz vs 120hz looks vastly different, since for example when I compare pixel 3 60hz vs pixel 5 90hz the 60hz doesnt look as laggy and choppy as does look iPhone / ios on 60hz when your eyes have seen same animations in 120hz. I believe the reason here is the iOS animations in general have always been very slow, not like laggy slow, but just slower paced animations and once you see them on 120hz that same animation on 60hz looks like a lag..

I had the 13 mini for a week before I returned it. Coming from the 8, I preferred the compact size and form of the 13 mini over the 14 plus that I ultimately bought. I liked it overall but the dealbreaker for me was the notch. I couldn't stand how pronounced the notch was on the 12 mini, and the 13 mini was no different as it dug deeper into the display. Knowing that dynamic island digs even deeper than notch 2.0 tells me we won't see another mini until FaceID goes under the display.

Couple months later 12mini got announced. I rejoiced in happiness. Ive had 12 mini since release day. I prefer Android to iOS, but since Samsungs have been getting increasingly large (my last Samsung was the Note 10) and I prefer smaller phones, I thought of trying the iPhone mini. I initially got the 12 mini and liked its size/weight so much that those aspects outweighed its below average battery life (which was still ok for my usage) and the often frustrating iOS, but when the iPhone 13 mini came out with improved battery life and cameras, per Apple, I gave it a try. Long story short, I ended up returning the 13 mini and keeping the 12 mini mainly for aesthetic reasons; love the blue on the 12 mini, its slimmer body and its less protruding/smaller cameras. I also didn't care for the diagonal arrangement of the camera lenses on the back of the 13 mini. In practical terms, the extra 10% or so of battery the 13 mini ended up with after a work day didn't matter since both phones lasted the work day for me and had to be charged at night anyway. And the improvements in the cameras were so minor that you have to be shooting in near darkness to discern any marked differences in image quality, and I rarely, if ever, need to shoot pics/vids in such poor lighting conditions. Having said the above and since the 12 mini won't last forever, I'll probably be getting a 13 mini this fall, unless Apple or, even better, Samsung smarten up and start producing sub-6" flagships again.

Yes, marginal call whether to upgrade to a 13 Mini from a 12 Mini - my wife still has a 12 Mini and will stick to that. Suits her just fine. But for me, coming from an 11 Pro Max, the 13 Mini was def the leap to make.

You know one of the biggest things that kept me from ever getting the 13 mini was 120hz displays. Like when it first came out I always said I never noticed a difference, but after being on 120hz displays for so long, I actually went and tried a regular iphone 13 and I noticed a difference from 60hz to 120hz and god did it frustrate me... So unfortunately unless they brought a mini back with pro-motion display, yeh I couldn't even begin to consider it. I even tried the 90hz display on the Pixel 7 and that irritated me as well. lol the Pixel 7 is what I traded for my iphone 14 pro.

@@hobbitpsi I think some people are more sensitive to the refresh rate than others; I tried phones that have 120hz refresh rate and, while I did notice slightly improved smoothness, it wasn't a big deal for me. Granted, my experience with the faster refresh rate was limited to trying display units of different phones that had it, so things may be different if I use a phone with a high refresh rate for a while then switch back to a 60hz phone, but, as it stands, I put much more emphasis on cameras, size/weight, wireless charging, screen quality and battery life than the refresh rate when I get a new phone.
@hobbitpsi
@hobbitpsi Жыл бұрын
@@sammyt3514 See I put a lot of emphasis on all those too, but what I look for specifically in all that is consistency, which is why I've been through so many Android devices and being unable to stick with one of them for longer than 3 months. It's why I like iphones, they are always consistent and just work no matter what, where as Androids always have a lot of bugs every patch. Far as the cameras on the iphone minis. They're good, I got the pros because they have more options as I love taking pictures of my kids and want the best pictures I can take of them as they grow up. And iphone take the best. Android devices oversaturate the pictures...The Pixel was close, but just not the kind of pictures I liked. I'll say the only con I had with the mini is the battery life. I couldn't even make it through half my work day before it was close to dying. And sure I could have just left it plugged at my desk all day and ran it as a pass-through but that would just make it hot and wear the battery out much faster.

I’m getting tired of my 13 pro max digging into my family friends in my pocket when working. I connected an old 5c, and miss the old size. I carried the 5c for a month and am getting the 13 mini. Waiting for it to arrive tomorrow.

I did the same thing...sent back the pro 14 and got another mini...I had done the same two years back with my pro eleven and had changed for the 12 mini...you think I had learned ...I will now hold on to my new mini for as long as I can!

Wow - I am on the same wavelength as you, as I await delivery of my used, excellent condition iPhone 13 Mini. I had the 13 Mini and loved it for its size and performance, but bought a 14 Pro at launch. The weight and balance of the 14 Pro was off for sure. Taking my dog for daily walks, it would only take an unexpected tug from the pup and my 14 Pro would go flying to the sidewalk (case protected at least). Just too heavy and slightly too big. On my 14 Pro, I'm still under contract (24 monthly credits) but I don't care. I'll sell it later and recoup. Looking forward to the 13 Mini for sure!

Totally the same wavelength. Same colour for your arriving 13 Mini or different?
@PackFan-tv5pj

@@TheTechPacker Well, when you buy used, sometimes you have to compromise based on condition, price, etc. It's Product Red, not my first choice but I paid only $422, it has 128GB storage, and warranty through November 2023. Added a black case and it will look like Midnight color to me 😅.

@@PackFan-tv5pj Totally hear you - I got a white after selling my preferred Blue. You get what you get when you need it. Maybe check out my video on how I get the most out of my 128GB 13 Mini too - hope it helps: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gdmHqq-FsJu6e6s.html

I could accept the slightly larger size than I would like (for me the perfect size would be 5.7") but I cannot tolerate the weight. I liked the size of the 11 pro but I couldn't stand the weight, and the 14 pro is worse... Currently I am on Android with a 5.8in phone which is quite a bit lighter than even the standard iPhone and will stay on Android (next Galaxy or next Zenfone) unless there is a new mini iPhone in the future, preferably with promotion

The balance of weight was also just too top heavy rather than evenly balanced. Just feels wrong in the hand.
@_Digitalguy

@@TheTechPacker I haven't tried the 14 but I have tried all the others and also I use a case for every phone, which may change the balance/grip a bit depeding on the case but adds to the weight... Personally I don't often use my phone for watching videos or browsing (I do it rarely as I do that mostly on my iPads) so comfort is a priority over size and weight

Phone & tablet size has disproportionately risen lately when they were always originally intended to be small, the iPhone mini 13 & the iPad mini 6 are the perfect combination of fully functioning lightweight powerful products in a compact portable format, expensive yes but totally unique & niche.
