Hi All!
Happy to present my first Flute Tutorial, due to many requests to post a tutorial on Sarigamapadanisa, the basic lesson on Carnatic Flute. I am posting this tutorial for the benefit of all who want to learn flute.
Generally, Ragam Mayamalavagowla is taught as the first ragam to all learners of Carnatic Music except flute, but for flute Harikambhoji is the first Ragam taught by teachers, as it is easier in flute than Mayamalavagowla.
I will also be uploading a tutorial for Mayamalavagowla Swarams on Flute, based on your response! Hope it benefits all learners!

Good to see you pointing out ways to remember how to play each note !! Would be quite useful for beginners of flute !! Harikambhoji is a very sweet raagam. One request from me Sis. You could try a short cover version of 'Chinna Kuyil Paadum Paattu' from 'Poove Poo Choodava' movie which is purely based on this Raagam Harikambhoji. From my observation, I'm sure this song would be suitable for flute Sis.

For Sa and Re, one need not close 5th and 6th hole. Sa : First two hole closed and Ri2 : First hole alone closed and Ga3: All holes open...

Yes it is not mandatory to close 5th and 6th. But my Guru told to close 5th and 6th Holes for added precision. ☺🙏

The hindusthani flute has 6 holes and one can play a gamut of ragas. The carnatic flute has 7holes. The shadja of carnitic starts a note higher than hindusthani thus places of full nd half notes changes by one step. The 7th hole is used to play the lower octave gandhara possibly. The hindusthani way is more convenient bcos shudha madhyamam is easy to play as half note nd theevra ma by opening all holes. While in carnatic nishadham is half nd full open holes bit difficult like ma nd MA.

Thank you. This flute was given by my teacher. You can buy flutes for beginners online through Amazon. For more advanced flutes, I am not very sure. Saptaswara Shop in Chennai offers good flutes.

Yes, use the same fingering. Whenever I say close 7th hole (for Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma etc.), you can ignore that. Otherwise same fingering only.

Hi. I have not tried to play in a 6 holed flute yet. But based on my observations of certain artists, you can play the same Fingering, without the 7th hole. For example, you can play Sa with Hole 1-2 and 5-6, Ri2 with Hole 1-5-6, Ga3 with 5-6 and Ma1 with 2-3-4-5-6. Just play the same Fingering closing the same holes without 7th hole. I have watched artists play like this in a 6 holed flute. You can try it and let me know ☺👍Best wishes
