My father was an MOD Police sergeant at the base in Hereford in the 80s and 90s. He told me next to nothing, but I remember asking him about people getting into the base. He said they couldn't really stop them getting in, but he didn't fancy their chances of getting out again - one of the few times my Dad cracked a smile that bordered on a laugh.

Really enjoying watching this chat as it brings back lots of memories, although not quite the same as yours. I joined the Royal Signals aged 17 in 1979, and after 2 years trade training, I was posted to 9 Signals Regiment at Ayios Nikolaos in Cyprus, and I was there at the same time that you referred to with the PLO attacks against the British bases. Also having been in Cyprus during the Falklands War, I later went on a Spanish course and did my first Detachment to the Falklands in August to December 1984, and the second from October 1986 to February 1987. In May 1985 I did the first of 4 trips to Belize, where for me, as R. Sigs and later Int Corps, I was fortunate to avoid the jungle as I served at APC and up at Cooma Cairn in the Mountain Pine Ridge area. I don't know how true it was, but I remember hearing a story about the Paras "sorting out" a bar that a Belizean had stupidly named the "Exocet".
