For the true lovers of top level mixing: Everyone in the comments is talking about the transition from Pushin' Too Hard to Musak, but the real mixing gem is the transition from West On 27th (a tribute to Twilo) to Tyrantanic that starts at 1:00:18 and continues all the way to 1:02:00, when it collapses into the string chorus of Tyrantanic. And then after that chorus the great Slacker strikes with his dirty, metalic, stabby, driving sound. Also the next mix to The Baguio Track is melodically perfect and rhythmically banging. Phenomenal. Someone who knew Sasha told me that this is his cd and disc 2 Digweed's, and that that is the case for all their double albums. Makes sense when you listen to them. This is their Twilo album and I have been blessed to have seen and heard them there. The legends in that legendary club. Another good listen from a bit later in that era is James Holden’s essential mix from 2002. One of the best ever, in my opinion. And of course Digweed’s first Bedrock and Sasha’s GU’s, and the absolute Bible of mix compilations: Northern Exposure I and II. Also their other mixes from the late 90’s are fire. You find many of them on SoundCloud and/or KZfaq. To me it was the best era of music and their partnership, even though I have heard them seriously rock more recently as well. Enjoy.

I´m from Mexico City and traveled to NYC in 2001 or 2000 (not sure) to see for the last time Sasha & John Digweed at twilo, I couldn´t get into the club due to the overcrowd inside, sadly I missed that historic party that night. Next day I went to Virgin Records on Times Square (now shuttered) and walking around the electronic music section found the great COMMUNICATE double record, got it right away obviously, it changed my life, I just can´t describe the feeling when first listened to it, it was like oh my god!!!!! you guys out there know perfectly what I mean, purchasing the Communicate CD was worth have Travelled to NYC at that time.... god bless music.. peace.

As of 1997 to the date (June 16th, 2016), I´ve attended more or less 15 John Digweed´s gigs and next friday I´ll be attending another one here in Mexico City ... I consider my self lucky enough about it, there´s no nothing compared to listen to a John´s set Live, such a great auditive experience, he´s one of a kind undoubtely... long life to John Digweed and Sasha, they make this life more enjoyable for sure...

lucky you buddy, here in Mexico City we had a nightclub called Pervert Lounge, considered legendary venue during the 90's that featured Paul Van Dyk, Dave Seaman and many other DJ´s that eventually would become the superstar dj´s as we all know ...nothing compared to Twilo of course but music has always speaks for it self no matter the place is played on right? cheers buddy and thanks for sharing feelings and experiences.

I sure listened to it a ton but I thought it was a major step backwards from the Northern Exposure or GU albums. It was too minimalistic or something.

@@leeartlee915 Which GU albums? Ibiza SF, L.A. or Hong Kong? I mean, ok, sure. And which Northern exposure albums? Expeditions? Ok, sure. But if you think this was a step backwards from stuff they put out in 96', you're biased by nostalgia. The stuff in 96' was great and important, but it was not this. This was so much more and I honestly believe they would tell you the same.
@leeartlee915
@leeartlee915 4 ай бұрын
@@luxuryseaviewvillas6744 I mean, it’s all opinion but I feel the original Northern Exposure is one the greatest DJ mixes of all time. I’ll agree that some of those mixes are influenced by nostalgia but not that album. That album is gold. As for GU, for the first 20 or so mixes, I thought they all pretty good. Obviously, some were better than others. But I was obsessed with Nick Warren, Digweed, Sasha, etc. And then you had the Nubreed guys come along and it just kept getting better and better. After GU went a little off the rails, we had the Balance series come online and some of those later mixes are, to this day, some of the best mixes ever. That’s not even to mention the Renaissance label or the countless other mixes that were coming out. Believe me, I listened to Communicate a ton but even back in the day it was far from one of my favorites. It didn’t have enough melody of trance, enough weirdness for tech-house, or the electro movement that came later on. And that’s just within the prog-house scene. You had tons of stuff with the Deep House scene like Lazy Dog/Buzzin’ Fly. You had breakbeat folks all over the place. …. I’ll just keep rambling forever. Bottom line, when i go back to older albums, I tend to skip this one. I think 2000-2001 was kind of a weird year for house music. A major transition period.

My first bought progressive house CD after listening to Northern Exposure, dropping my first "Double Stacked White Mitsubishi" then seeing them play live in Vegas for an 8hr set. The amount of memories are flooding my mind at this moment. Next chapter was Burning Man 2001 - 2010. These were memories that will forever be burned in my mind. What a great time to be alive!! Life is good! Here's to getting old and living right never regret and look to the future. Life always open doors of beautiful opportunities.

I started getting into Techno (Adam Beyer, Truncate, Plastikman, etc) about 6 years ago. But this guy that I dj with every sunday night (10 years older than me, I'm 22) has been showing me all of this awesome music, like Bedrock and Global Underground. It's a real shame that I missed out on what seems like the greatest time in the history of dance music. So now I just explore the timeless music of this era and incorporate a lot of it into my sets. It's magical, and just has all of the vibes that I've long been searching for. While I'm not too excited over too much of what Sasha and Digweed have produced in recent years, this shit is absolute fire!!

Nebula_ Sounds about right, '96-'02 was THE golden age of dance music. Most of it is overprocessed club filler junk today. Very little creative sound coming from dance music. Once you've heard enough, you can pick out songs from this era easily. And they never feel or sound old.

I remember average reviews from the likes of mixmag, Muzik etc but you know what. There were a lot of edits, and that was going on even during the Renaissance days. When I was at university studying a music prod degree, one of my friends used to work for the studio that would receive the master tapes recorded by various DJs for mix albums, and he said the job of mastering for the CD wasn't to just transfer, but to adjust the speed (to reduce the time to 1hr 20mins), make cuts to shorten or even lengthen tracks by repeating bars, and removing mistakes in the mixing where the DJ would stop, go back to the bar where they would start the transition and try again. He said Sasha and Digweed often made mistakes.

It was mixed using Pro Tools. They all were. Pro Tools 4 was a real game changer. They didn’t even attempt to mix live and then tidy up post, they were literally mixed using Pro Tools and a mouse.
