Our VRF Grab Bags (GB) videos are compiled from content from our cameras as Mods and fans spot something neat while watching our cameras. In the GB you will, of course, find a variety of TRAIN content, special trains, maintenance, steam, diesels, interesting rail cars, cool paint schemes and more. You will also find fun people, city events, boats, planes, cars (sometimes going wild) and nature. Thank you for taking the time to sit back and enjoy these highlight reels that we call "Grab Bags"!

I was wondering when I was going to see those.. those FE Trading high wall gondolas at 10:26.. I had a hand in making those about a month ago. Crane operator; I move the end walls along the assembly line to have their various parts welded on. One end wall of those gondolas weights just shy of 3000lbs. Sitting on my lunch break watching this.. then back to moving more end walls. For another contract but same style of car. Also making TTX articulated well cars and hoppers for Richardson. Already been tagged as well, lol.

The large loco transfer moves are mainly a result of basic supply and demand. As changing patterns and levels of traffic demands amoung various areas develop a railroad will need to shift motive power from places where need has decreased to those areas where business requires increased equipment availability.

0:06 Rio Grande hopper, although you didn't pause for it (although you did at 1:28) 0:26 two old Amtrak baggage cars. The first one is in Phase V and was always a baggage car, while the 2nd is in phase IV and was converted from a sleeper car in the 90s. These were last used as extra axles on midwest trains in 2020 1:18 what I always like about the La Grange camera is that you can see inside the hoppers and gondolas 1:48 three brand new BNSF locomotives without any cars. The first is an ES44AH and the other two are ET44AHs. BNSF is one of the few railroads that has bought all-new locomotives in the 2020s while the rest are focusing on rebuilding older units 1:57 CSX 1869 leading 2:08 10-unit lash-up 3:00 slug and geep set and an ex-NS SD70ACu sold to PRLX. I find it odd NS ended up selling units they rebuilt themselves. CSX 1897 is one of the mid-train DPUs 3:36 UP 1111 leading 3:55 UP 1943 leading solo. (again in La Grange at 5:32) I feel we don't see enough of these two units 4:08 CSX 1982 leading 4:48 MOW train reversing with the first piece of equipment being gray instead of green or yellow 6:08 ballast wheel in action 7:29 CSX inspection railcar in La Grange 8:05 one guy crosses in front of a single locomotive pulling one boxcar 8:56 these people crossed at a crossing, but ignored the red lights 9:26 Golden West Service hopper. These cars were mostly owned by Southern Pacific hence the SSW markings 9:37 SD40-2, YN2 GP40-2, and ET44AH. It's quite uncommon for narrow nose power to be put in front of wide cab units 9:56 most of these hoppers have CATX markings, but this one was sold to TRIX. A Reading and Northern open hopper is on the same train 10:25 Jesse, we need to ship freight! 10:36 four units on a short MOW train 11:00 11-unit light power move (again at 14:48) 11:40 two units pulling a GREX train (with their own unit trailing) 11:52 this driver is not aware of their surroundings. The replacement front right panel implies something like this has happened to them before 13:15 Sperry truck passes La Plata station 13:27 NS 34. Only 38 is called "The Brick" 13:50 Amtrak 203 and 164 doubleheading the Southwest Chief! 14:17 Montana Rail Link SD70ACe. BNSF recently acquired them (most of the trains on the MRL route were BNSF run-throughs) and now MRL power is starting to spread across the BNSF system. 15:19 front loader driving through a big puddle 15:45 new flatbeds cor carrying switch sections and/or large steel sheets 16:24 H2 dash 9, H1 dash 9, H1 SD40-2, and a CEFX marroon SD9043MAC. Most were bought by NS and converted into SD70ACus

What's crazy about that car that cut off the train in La Grange, Ky is that he didn't have to go through town to make that left hand turn on First St. He could have avoided the tracks altogether by cutting down one of the side streets.

It's always nice to see the Spirit of the Union Pacific out and about--twice this time!--and I really liked the "Powered by Our People" artwork on the lead loco at Ft. Worth. Arvada usually looks so busy in the sunrises you show us, but in this footage it looked frozen, still and deserted...and as always very beautiful. Loved the power move in the fog in Wichita and the nice shiny one in OKC, as well as the MOW machinery working everywhere (it looks as if Hesperia got pounded by that atmospheric river but the line is still open). And while I suppose this world will never have a shortage of boneheads, that one in LaGrange...It would be LaGrange...Sheesh. Thanks for another great one!

There's been quite a few Darwin candidates at the La Grange camera lately, according to the videos. It feels like they don't think the train can hurt them since it has to go slow on that track. Maybe it should go through at like 30 or 40 kph once or twice just to let the Darwin candidates know that, yes, it is still a train, and it will not and cannot stop for you.

That is one of those questions where the answer is "it depends; it has been done". On the mainline trains we see here, No, because they would interfere with trains following them. Historically, Yes, it has been done both officially and unofficially. In the early days of long distance passenger trains here in the US there were official meal stops, use search term Harvey House to start finding more info. Also, historically, it was sometimes done on small shortline and branch line railroads where normally only 1 train was ever running at a time. Today, it is not unknown around the world for locomotives used on long distance trains to have in their cab a small cooker or even tiny refrigerator. Wabtec who are the current form of the Westinghouse company known for airbrake systems and electrical supplies for locomotives currently make and market cab refrigerators, use search term, ME4250 Cab Refrigerator, to find one such refrigerator.
