I have a couple mod recommendations for anyone doing trains. If you like mods, if not thats all good. You can get these mods through the Satisfactory Mod Manager 1) Flex Splines, this mod offers a few alternatives to vanilla, belts, pipes, lifts, and the Train Track. They do not offer any additional speed just better attachment. All of those bugs you get with train tracks where you have check and triple checked the spacing and it is perfect and it should attach, this modded "flex track" will always attach no problem. You still can't use it to turn any sharper than a 3x3 minimum, it just somehow overcomes the vanilla glitches with tracks not attaching right. 2)Blueprint Designer Plus. This is just an expansion of the vanilla blueprint system which allows you to blueprint up to a 12x12 grid. The author recommends caution in filling this size blueprint with machines but it works perfectly for tracks. I have recreated all of the junctions shows in this video complete with lights, power lines, and signals and blueprinted them with no issue. It doesn't seem to like the addition of actual train stations but you can build a train station platform complete with all the trimmings then once you place that blueprint you need only place the actual station and docking ports. Anyway I love these it takes out a TON of frustration of connections that the game simply wont make but should, and allows you to avoid the incredible boring repetitive actions of building the same junctions around the map a couple dozen times.

This is not only the best rail guide I've watched by far, this is one of the best guides I've ever seen for any game period. You should be proud of this guide. Very helpful as always 🙂 Regarding trains slowing down before signals, you can actually avoid that: - Moving trains do actually not just check the next block signal, they check ALL the block signals that are within their current braking distance. This means that a heavy train going 200 kmh (the highest speed any automated train by now is allowed to reach) will check block signals much further ahead than a empty train doing 50 kmh. So the train always looks ahead far enough, so that it can properly (without cheating physics) come to a stop in front of the next red signal/station. A block signal sstandard setting is green. So unless something is blocked, a series of block signals wont stop a train from maintaining 120 kmh. A path signal standard setting is red. Trains treat it as red signal and as such begin to brake in sufficient distance to come to a full stop. Since it it a good idea to place block signals regularly, the train often will already begin to brake even though it has several green block signals ahead, just so that it could stop in front of the (red) path signal if it has to: This often leads to a slowdown, because the braking distance of the train is often longer than the distance between the block and the path signal: Scenario: Lets assume equal signal distance and a braking distance of 4 signals: Block Signal Block Signal Block Signal Block Signal Block Signal Path Signal Block Signal Block Signal - all signals in braking distance are green, maintain speed Block Signal - Path signal is counted as red, beginning to brake Block Signal - braking Block Signal - braking Block Signal - The request for a path is only send once the train passed the last block signal in front of the path signal. Only now, the path signal will check the path and turn green. Path Signal - now turning green, train accelerates again Block Signal To avoid trains slowing down, the distance between the last block signal and the path signal, has to be longer than the braking distance of the train. Then the green path signal can be requested in time and the train will keep running at full speed. :-)

You can make a "tiny" 4-way unholy roundabout by entering at the main compass points and exiting at intercardinals for example enter at East and exit at South-West. This will make it fit all directions but it will not ne centered or if you center the exits, it looks funky, and yes, the entrances and exits will corss over each other

Jfc. The mini rant about the 90 degree turn at 15 min mark is the reason I'm here. Building an actual rail network (vs just point to point that I've been using to learn things) for the first time and that has been frustrating me to no end. Glad to know that's just the way it is and it's not me being bad at measuring things. Thank you

This is the greatest tutorial ever for building "organic" rail lines I have ever seen, holy moly! Every time I start a new save it always dies around setting up a rail network - Making the train stations is easy. Making the intersections is crisp and technical. But connecting the pieces across country through the terrain? Hours of headache until I just give up. This is going to change everything!!

Coming from Factorio I really wanted to get my hands on the railway system, to the point where my friends started calling me the fat conductor because I was always going on about trains and I am pretty bulky. I'd read up on the differences between Factorio's and Satisfactory's signal systems, and I didn't think it'd be too complex to set up. When I finally tried it out in a private test world, I think I quit within 5 minutes of fiddling with rails because of the amount of jank involved. I'm grateful I persevered though, and figured out ways to build more consistently, and I loved this video because I learned a lot, especially about inclines and ramps. That being said, I think it's a very poorly-made game mechanic, and needs some tlc.

Excellent tutorial! Diagrams and construction is shown in a consistent manner. Other like-topic videos take to long to get to a point; frequently go off topic; and, worst, use the game camera as a pointing tool that can only result in motion sickness for those susceptible to such. I want to add a couple of useful pieces of info - For S Bends, the minimum distance between straights varies with how much of an offset we're talking about. These distances are grid axis, not point to point. For a 8m offset (1 foundation), the minimum distance is 23m (3 foundations minus a meter). For a 16m offset (2 foundations), the minimum distance is 33m (4 foundations plus a meter). For a 24m offset (3 foundations), the minimum distance is 40m (5 foundations even). For a 32m offset (4 foundations), the minimum distance is 45m (5 foundations plus 5 meters). For a 40m offset (5 foundations), the minimum distance is 49m (6 foundations plus 1 meters). For a 48m offset (6 foundations), the minimum distance is 51m (6 foundations plus 3 meters). For a 56m offset (7 foundations), the minimum distance is 52m (6 foundations plus 4 meters). For a 64m offset (8 foundations), the minimum distance is 53m (6 foundations plus 5 meters). For a 72m offset (9 foundations), the minimum distance is 53m (6 foundations plus 5 meters). Not an error. For a 80m offset (10 foundations), the distance is too long for a single track to connect. I wouldn't be surprised if these can be effected by the same little glitch that you have with 90 degree bends, so maybe add a meter or two to all of them where it matters. Or round up to the nearest whole foundation. So - 3, 5, 5, 6, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7 foundations. Edit - Oh, also there's a few particular blueprints I find to be really handy. Make yourself a pair of opposing 45 degree bends and a 90 degree bend that's comprised of the two 45s. They don't connect when you place them, but they're still really good to help you quickly and easily get the spacing and such.

Seriously, no, seriously, this is the best train guide. Very well presented too! One caveat I did notice. I tried the "paths on entrances and blocks on exits" and was stumped, as all blocks would work, but adding paths just didn't. What I found out, generally by a lot of shouting and expletives and about an hour or so of weeping, that the 'game' sees an entrance irrespective of direction. So I had to also add path signals to the reverse of the entrance as well - I know I am not explaining it well, but I did put a post on steam about it with a pic. Anyhow, without this guide I wouldn't have got part way through the pain of path signals 😁

Fair point, I could have done a bit better explaining signal placement in this video! Glad to hear that you figured it out and I hope that during the moment of frustration that the expletives did not surpass a PG-13 level

@@ToasterGamingYT technically any number of expletives higher than one in a single moment would violate PG-13 given that in the entire movie you can only have one non-sexual expletive like a WTF in the entire movie

Thanks! This helped me figure out the basics of trains and get further into the game than my previous attempts. One question about the chained inclines though, is that not the same as two 2m ramps ascending one after the other, as opposed to spending 2 foundations to extend, then stack a 2m ramp on a 2m foundation?

When I watched this 3 part video guide, specially with this 3rd one, I was thinking to myself "come on, how hard can it be? it's like conveyor belts but bigger." Oh boy was I wrong... Railways are so annoying to build my will to keep playing hit a brick wall. And building them wasn't where the frustrations ended, they're so slow that you'd have to fill them twice or more as much as you need each trip if you want your factories to never stop.

Great tutorial as usual. One comment though: your turns are not really 3 by 3 foundations. You start at an edge of a foundation (say at the upper edge of the foundation at the bottom of your screen around 27:30 in the video) and you go to the middle of your third foundation (to the left for example, going up only 2.5 foundations and 2.5 foundations to the left), making your turns in fact to be 2.5 by 2.5 foundations. That's why your 90 degree turns between start and end segments won't work. I place my traintracks from the center of a foundation to the center of another foundation. Those are exactly 3 by 3 and those 90 degree turns are possible without any problems. See kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bt6co9KdzZyyY3U.html

If you want your 90 degree turn to connect to an end segment you need to place both the starter and end segment 1 more space back. So you need a 3x3 L shape, a starter segment that ends 1 space before the L shape and the end segment that begins 1 space past the L shape.

14:55 becasuse if you connect a start and end segment with a turn, it sadly isnt a "sharp and crisp Turn" anymore. I saw that on big Turns i did on my network. Like, did a 180, the first 90 i built Start -> Turn -> End, the second one i built like Start -> End -> Turn, and driving over that felt odd, because the second part the Train suddenly steered just a tiny bit more into the turn -> the angle is steeper, wich explains the error on the shortest possible turn. Laying these Turnbuilding Techniques above each other makes it clear what happens.

Maybe a simpler way of explaining the grid placement on the T- and 4-way intersections is to start with a square grid that is the width of your network, and then add 4 foundations off of each edge of that square.

Love these guides, these are full of useful info. Well edited and quite humorous as well. I don’t like a lot of the more popular satisfactory channels, most of them have irritating personalities, I couldn’t imagine myself sitting through a 40minute kibitz video without wanting to noose myself, but after a 40minute Toaster video I’m wanting to see more. Would you consider doing a let’s play series on a new save perhaps?

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I have considered doing a Let's Play but I'm waiting for a full release so I can experience the story with a nice fresh save. When and if it ever gets fully released... So perhaps in the future there will be a Let's Play But regardless, I can promise that there will be more Satisfactory content like this in the future!

Hey toaster. Wouldn't it be great to have a simple check box in settings, to default poles to snap to left or right driving for trains.
