12.04- Sadly, these spectacular flocks of starlings have become much rarer in the last forty or so years. When I was a child, we had a massive flock of these birds congregate each evening during autumn and winter in a group of pine trees at the very end of our local school playing field. These trees faced west, and were at the top of the hill at the end of our road. We were treated to displays like the one in the video every night until the whole flock took off for their roost site: for five minutes the sky was just full of birds. The sound they made was deafening, for starlings chatter constantly, and we quickly learned not to put bird food out at this time, unless we wanted our garden swamped by a tsunami of starlings (no exaggeration, this!). Then, for some unknown reason, the starling population plummeted. The trees they gathered in all those years ago are long gone, and I've seen a large flock of starlings here just the once when one year, some time ago, the local flock chose to roost in a nearby field. Still, that massive winter flock left such a strong impression on me that I can recall the spectacular aerial displays they produced even now.

FYI: Glowing hot boulders rolling down toward hikers may be considered potentially dangerous to some humanoids. It can be difficult to get out the way when the slope is covered in snow-covered ice. Next, if I need to see (& smell) a mud volcano, I'll take a couple of Senekot. Then flushing produces an "awe inspiring vortex" as well as a sigh of relief. I've been on thin ice most of my professional life but the sounds it produces isn't worth recording. Starlings are impressive when they flock & the noise is incredible. Thanks for the vid.

I love how the sheep don't care about the insane starling patterns. They say 'Life exists as a way for the universe to understand itself' but evidently Sheep think grass is far more compelling than what the starlings are doing.

I use to go to a gym that had an indoor hot tub by a large window that faced a big field. It was so interesting to see Starlings come down in unison to peck at the grass in the field, looking for something to eat. But what was even more remarkable was the way in which they would suddenly fly away. They all lifted off at exactly the same moment. I think it is similar to huge schools of fish that I’ve seen in videos of whales feeding; the fish move just like the birds. Mother Nature is a true wonder!

That first volcano, where the lava lands on snow and the lava turns to basaltic rock? You can hear the almost bell-like sounds as it rolls down the hill. This gives the basalt rock its nickname, jingle stones. It is also called traprock. I live in New England where there hasn't been a volcano in eons, but the mountains have quite a bit of basalt stone still.

@Underworld. Nice flock of starlings. Now look up "sort sol Tøndermarsken" meaning black sun at the marshes of Tønder. In spring and autumn the Scandinavian starlings gather in this small area on their journey between Scandinavia and Europe.
