Violinist Shunske Sato talks about the 'Brandenburg' Concerto no. 3 in G major, which he performed with the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. In this piece many aspects come to play: familiarity, number symbolism, and tutti versus solo aspect. Sato has to be aware of these aspects and actively work with them.

I was for a long time enamoured of many of the early music and baroque ensembles of the past. So many names, I'd have to dig into my iTunes folders to see. And as the 21st century grew, I knew we were losing these jewels of musical performance, one by one. JUST RECENTLY, I happened upon the wonderful performance of the Kaffee Kantata by the NBS. I was stunned. Not only beautiful baroque playing, but the acting was stunning! And not just the acting of the three vocalists, but also of the other performers in this little cafe that had been set up. Everyone was interacting with everyone, musically and dramatically. I never enjoyed the Kaffee Kantata more and I binged on it, playing it, by now, about 1/2 dozen times. THEN, I started exploring the catalogue of performances. I love all of the concertos, and cut my teeth on the Brandenburg 3, yes, with Wendy Carlos, before before. NOW, I have found what I thought had gone away. The NBS is my new go-to for Baroque music, especially Bach. And they give me a motivation to go beyond the concertos into other works. Wah hoo! Another place to visit, and more music to enjoy. Thank you, Sato.

My story with this piece was from 9th/10th grade orchestra. I had just started playing the bass, and while other musicians in the orchestra were more experienced, the orchestra itself was at a lower level of skill than the senior HS orchestra. So this was a simple piece to play in terms of rhythm and key. But to actually master the nuances that Bach intended through his groupings and flow requires an understanding of music theory as well as historical music and dances. So the Brandenburg 3 is easy to learn, but like many Bach pieces, difficult to master.

Sato, such a talented and beautiful person. As a débutante ou intermédiaire violoniste what Bach sonata and partitas are the easiest to learn? I guess starting with Bach Double in Suzuki book 3 and then Brandenburg 3?

2:10 Three is a Western World- standard written essay form: Thesis (orchestra), three Topics (sections each expose one topic) and a Conclusion (tutti, all together repeat major points), so no surprise there, it is just to make them work! (maestro it would be life appreciation it you order them play Mozart Horn concert K. 495 or K.412/514 Rondo, thank you from son of violin teacher, amateur single horn in F player, father of data science engineers that like music too..)

Sato, I love the performances SO MUCH, but the tempo feels rushed doesn’t it? I feel like modern baroque performances pick the tempo really fast.

I think it is possible that there are people who like to watch videos like these and they don't speak english so well; when it is written and they can read at the same time it is easier to understand!
