High school basketball star Nathaniel "Cornbread" Hamilton (Keith Wilkes) is the pride of his urban neighborhood, and he appears destined for big things on the court and in the classroom. But a dare leads to a fatal misunderstanding when Nathaniel is shot dead by police who take him for someone who's just committed a violent crime. As police officers try to protect one of their own, members of the oppressed African-American community do what they must in order to find justice.

For those of us of a certain age this movie reminds of a time when we were little kids and we came of age at a time when not only racism was matter of fact and casual! But police brutality as well! Our parents tried to teach us right from wrong! Schools too! I remember being confused when I came out of the house and saw this played out in front of me! This classic movies me back to those times! I was so very naive back then! All of us kids were. But we learned! Boy did we learn! Great movie!

One of my older brother's bought the soundtrack to this film on import in 1975. It became mine in 1981 as payment for money owed to me, along with 30 other classic albums he paid to have imported to the UK. The cute child winking on the cover of the album was Laurence Fishburne.

Cornbread Keith Wilkes turned to Jamal Wilkes (UCLA and Lakers) after he converted to Islam. Wow, a young Huggy Bear. Music composed by Donald Byrd, jazz great! Fishburne and other iconic future movie stars. These 70s movies had a good message even being low budget. Shows that we had ongoing issues with those who were to serve and protect.
