Mike Myers really is an interesting link between North Atlantic humor and British humour. Given that his parents are both British, this really does seem like something that could have been on British public access television in the mid 80s.

Years ago, I read somewhere that the American accent is less changed from how English used to be at the time of the colonisation of the Americas, than the modern English accent. You can sort of see how much better it is at expressing the spelling when you hear words like "drawing" and "world". In my previous comment, I should have really said "England" as opposed to "Britain" because a lot of Scottish and Irish accents don't have this problem. Apparently it came into fashion amongst the English upper class to distinguish themselves from less wealthy people by affecting an accent more like the ones you hear today. Not sure how true any of this is, but I did read it in a book, and not on my facebook wall or anything, for what that's worth. And putting on fake accent because it's fashionable is still common here today; just look at the grime scene. Good old snobbery.
@briarrose3687
@briarrose3687 5 жыл бұрын
Jesus. “Sadly accurate.” Lmao. Most of us happen to like American accents for what it’s worth, we find them interesting and attractive. Most British people do not have the accent that you associate with them - its only a very small amount of people in the south. It’s either this one or the cockney one that Americans are familiar with. It represents such a small part of our population. We are a lot bigger than London. You certainly wouldn’t like the rest of them if you don’t like those. But you just keep putting others down based on how they speak English so you can all feel better about yourselves for one minute of your life 😂

Mike is Canadian and we did indeed watch that boring show in Canada when I was a kid. I still remember the real lyrics by heart for some strange, musically magical reason. The first time I saw this sketch, I laughed because I knew exactly where the theme came from, and no doubt, so did Mike. The Austin powers theme is also from a Canadian game show, called 'Definition' that played right before the Flintstones at lunch time.
