The whole skit revolved around reactions. Darnell's reaction when Doug gets the first one right, the awkward handshake, and the "Not a damn thing" reaction. Of course, the "What Lives Matter" had the best reactions of all. They KNEW where it was about to go!

HAH!! Exactly...United Arab Emirates: I know who they are in this soap opera but I had a blank spot the other day. I was watching a commercial and Jennifer Anniston was doing a commercial for Emmerites Airlines. She never or I hardly ever see her do commercials. It was just one of those weird things that just didnt sit right. Isnt that airline owned by Saudi Arabia? It didnt sit right, weird.
@swarmofbees
@swarmofbees 7 жыл бұрын
My take away is that people are 90% the same but the rest of the 10% really start defining who we are, in a lot of ways. This is why all the contestants were equally picking off the answers throughout the game show and why, when it came to Final Black Jeopardy, Doug was clearly going to lose and the host and other contestants clearly took issue with it. Black people feel marginalized and the single white guy couldn't see it from this perspective. But, I definitely agree with you that this was hilarious and ballsy.
@Smok-wu3nq
@Smok-wu3nq 7 жыл бұрын
David Lor Let me ask you something. Since the installment (or election) of the countless black aldermen/women in the black neighborhoods, how much better have those neighborhoods fared economically, safety, and crime wise? Was there the improvement that was supposed to have been seen? I havent seen it. It just looks to me that the only blacks that had an improvement were those elected and their own inner circles. The rest stayed the same.
@JudeMalachi
@JudeMalachi 7 жыл бұрын
David Lor your comment just goes back to Berk's original point that people are actually separated by class and not by race.... If a black person feels marginalized it is largely because of some notion instilled into them from this idea of being part of a "black community" that is separate from the mainstream American culture at large. The political class both fosters and utilizes this exactly so that it can create the conditions where we believe ourselves, as a society, to be separated by race. So in a way we really are separated by race, at least apparently, but this separation is artificial and contrived having been created so that we don't become wise to the fact that it is only class that is separating us, naturally, in truth, in our so-called "classless society". This is why working class people of all races intuitively understand that the game is rigged and they are being conspired against. The real conspiracy is, of course, nothing like they imagine, but what they imagine has been fueled by the unconscious awareness of what is really happening to them.
@swarmofbees
@swarmofbees 7 жыл бұрын
I see the same change in other communities as well. What do you suppose is the culprit to this lack of change? And how can we address it?

@@mindyschocolate What cracks me up about that word "hick" is that most of y'all have no idea what livin in the rural south is even like. Go to the barber shop and see black and white folk sittin around shootin the breeze. Go to the river, pond or lake and you'll see white and black folk fishin and knockin back a few beers together shit talkin each other seein who's gonna catch the biggest. It's actually a shock for most of us when we venture out of our little neck of the woods and head up north or west for a vacation to places like NYC, Chicago, Cali & etc and all we see is black and white folk at each other's throats. It's not lost on us down here that whenever someone wants to portray a racist they immediately dawn a terrible southern accent but what's funny is all these hate crimes, police shootings and etc seem to be taking place in primarily non-southern areas..... more often than not they're in Democrat/Leftist controlled areas. Places where "hicks" aren't located.

This is one of the best SNL skits they've ever done. It's hilarious, topical, and surprisingly understanding of other people's views without just taking easy cheap shots. @@JJohnston4Life I don't think that's accurate. He's wearing a MAGA hat and the skit is 4 years old, which would be Trumps first year. This was right in the heart of Trump era, and fully within the time everyone was taking cheap shots at each other, which is what makes this skit so beautiful by not stooping to the level everyone else was at that time. My favorite underrated part of this skit is that there are no real answers. As long as Darnell agrees, you win. Edit because the replies are driving me mad: In actual Jeopardy, you need to get the answer exactly correct, word-for-word. But in this skit, Darnell accepts any answer he personally agrees with, even if it is not the "correct", exact answer. Sorry I didn't explain myself well enough in the original comment, but these replies are driving me up the wall.

@@gregfaber3417 You're completely right. Race is a social construct without any biological basis. Unfortunately, race still has very real consequences.

I love this sketch. It shows it doesn't matter what ethnicity you are. People who live in disadvantaged economic conditions face similar challenges and come to similar conclusions.

Kenan Thompson's character blended perfectly with Tom Hanks' character. It was as if they met in the parking lot of a Lowes or Home Depot. 100% authentic, sincere and realistic, as each and every one of us have encountered a Doug.

I actually have an Uncle Doug that is exactly like this character, only he's from Jersey. Still flies a Confederate flag, though. He's a fan of losers.

Patron not to mention he can do a great accent as well. Have you seen him in "The Terminal" I think that's the name of the movie where he has to live in an airport for a long time. I believe it was based on a true story if I'm not mistaken.

I like the way they did this sketch, to find more common ground rather than division. Well done, Hanks was great.
