Small Caliber Arms Review

5 жыл бұрын

Combination rifle and shotguns have been around for a long time as a way to lessen the amount of firearms you need to carry on an expedition. Stevens started making this one then Savage took over production about 1950 and produced it in several different calibers and gauges. Savage still produces the model 42 chambered in 22/410.
Special thanks to #Roadlife89 for loaning me his Grandfathers rifle to do a review on.

I have Granddad’s Model 24. It hasn’t been out of the safe in years can’t remember if it has a suffix designation. Granddad bought it in the ‘50’s sometime it is .22lr/.410 3”. Nice wood furniture and a color case hardened receiver. I have been in possession of this since around 1964. It still looks as good as when it was new. I have shot countless rabbits, quail, dove with it. I am 75 and in probably not too many years it will go to my grandson.

I got a 30 30 over 20ga. 20 ga takes 3” magnums too. Checkered walnut stock with swirly blueing on the receiver. Inherited from my Dad. And his Dad owned a gun shop here in town. So Dad inherited from Grampa. I love it and will someday give it to my son. Shot a lot of partridge and big game with it. My motto when carrying this gun was that the bottom barrel will fill the pot but the top barrel will fill the freezer.

I’ve seen several survival rifles from Savage and other brands over the years. I would feel really great about carrying this gun into the woods with me due to the caliber/gauge combination for this gun! The .30-30 works really well for deer, 12 gauge can fetch you about any bird you want to eat with the right shot, and you can load buckshot or slugs, as well! Great options here!

I found one in a gun shop a few years ago. Bought it. Had some issues with the 12 gauge not firing but had that fixed. I put a weaver mount on it and a red dot. You can still use the open sight thou. A butt sleeve to hold extra rounds w/ a check riser works great. Then a got a 8" rifled insert for the 12 gauge tube. Not it shoots 12 gauge/ .30-.30 and .22 long rifle. Take this with me everywhere. With the different types of ammo and shells, this is great for hunting, camping , or anything.

Gotta start messing with mine again! Think I got my trigger down to under 3.5 pounds…or less. I need to polish the chambers. On my first outing with it I had a12 gauge trap load stuck in the chamber after firing. I had to tap it out the empty hull with a cleaning rod. Figure polishing might help with the release. I also acquired a bunch of 22 hornet brass and tons of hornet specific projectiles to do some accuracy testing.

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview yeah it was the first time shooting the gun when I had stuck hull. Was using cheap 7.5 shot federal trap loads for testing. Didn’t happen again, but I haven’t shot it much or I should say after the test it’s been collecting dust ever since. I figure a good chamber polishing will help release them. It worked in my 223 H&R so I’m guessing it will hopefully fix the issue in the savage. It looked it the brass stuck under the extractor on the 24f.

My Brothers and I had identical Model 24s in .22LR and .410 shotgun, back about 50 years ago. I late refinished the furniture on mine. They were good reliable single-shot guns, but I always craved more gun. This 30:30 and 12 gauge combo would do the trick. They show up every now and then on guns international. Towards the end of the Model 24's run at Savage Arms, they put the shotgun barrel on top and the rifle barrel below, which I think is a better arrangement. The other issue with most combination guns is that it is hard when using open sights to shoot accurately with both barrels. Either you dial in the rifle barrel or the shotgun barrel, but seldom both. There's a term for that property but I can't remember its name.

I just got done stoning the trigger in my 22 hornet/ 12 gauge. After four times of stoning and testing I bet it still breaks at 5 pounds or more but really crisp. Before I started it literally hurt my finger to pull the trigger. I don’t see how these guns are worth anything except for a novelty which explains why they don’t make them anymore. I have plenty of other guns with lighter triggers that’ll be way more accurate for hunting so this gun will probably sit in the closet until somebody pays me twice is what it’s worth.

You'll just have to look around, maybe check your local shops and gun shows. There are some online gunbrokers that may have them listed too. Other than the .22/410, there haven't been any new ones made in years.

Savage needs to resurrect this whole model 24 series. "Survival" combination guns would sell like pop corn at a movie theatre these days. There are potential combos that Savage never even made back when that would really get people standing in line for one. 12ga and .30-30 sure seems like a wilderness survival gun to me. Even grizzly bear could be taken with that.

I agree. I think the only thing they have available right now, is the model 42. The only caliber choices in the modern one is .22lr or .22mag over a .410 shotgun barrel. I would imagine its tough to fulfill the wants of all the shooters out there but the 22/410 combo seems to be a great choice for the beginning hunter. Thanks for watching!

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview They could sell a ton of them with .22lr/28ga barrels these days. .410 is dying a miserable death. Ammo essentially non existent, And heard of scalper prices of $25 or more a box, but see 28ga at Wal-Mart regularly in this ammo crisis.

I've even seen stores gouging ammo, $299.99 is not the regular price for a Remington 1400rnd "Bucket-O-Bullets".

You can not tell how it patterns by firing 3 shots at the same target. The real pattern will be shown from one shot.

I was just showing the firearm. The patterning board was the only shotgun target I had available at this public range. Thanks for watching!

It was a loaner gun on a public range and the only place they'd let me shoot the shotgun.
