This is a ten-minute sample from "Savannah in the Civil War," a 90-minute documentary created by historian and filmmaker Michael Jordan of Cosmos Mariner Productions (www.cosmosavannah.com). The film includes more than 30 actors and interviews with 18 historians, and covers the full spectrum of Civil War history in Savannah, from battles at sea and on land to the city's surrender at the end of Union General William T. Sherman's infamous "March to the Sea."

Check out 2 stories. The Battle Of Monteith Swamp. How 1,100 men 800 from North Carolina and 300 from Georgia. Battle Sherman's 62,000 Soldiers for hours on end to slow Sherman enough to try and protect the railway system from Sherman's Bowties. 2 nd story is the Massacre at Ebenezer Creek. Many slaves were murdered by Sherman's troops.

Voting for politicians who are either in favor of "immediate secession" or "co-operationist," the people of Georgia go to the polls across the state. In north Georgia the areas near larger cities are for immediate secession. Floyd County, the area around Rome, voted 3 to 2 in favor of secession. Clarke County, the area around Athens, votes 3 to 1 in favor of secession. However, Murray County was more typical of north Georgia. They vote 3 to 1 in favor of the co-operationist candidate. White County voted 320 to 48 for the co-operationist, and in Dade County, which seceded from the state when Georgia seceded from the Union, the vote was 346 to 42 against secession. Until the 1970's the vote for secession had been listed as 50,243 in favor of secession to 37,123 against. In 1972 the Georgia Historical Society attempted to recreate the vote because of abnormalities that had been noticed in some counties. For example, Forsyth County and Cobb County showed a higher vote count than for the hotly contested presidential elections two months previous, an unlikely scenario. Using contemporary sources, mostly local newspapers, the society concluded that the margin for the vote was razor-thin, and it was a vote against secession. The final vote on January_2, 1861 was 42,744 in favor of co-operation [with the union] and 41,717 in favor of immediate secession.

That has been further investigated - the records for about 100 counties are missing, so it requires extrapolation. The conclusion has been that it would have been closer but still for secession. Georgia, as other mid-Atlantic States, was split between lowlands and mountains, and slaveowners vs. small farmers, but the majority of voters were definitely not in favor of remaining in the US, with Savannah as a major East Coast port standing to benefit from direct free trade with Britain.

Georgia would never have seceded if not for voter fraud in the days after the Jan.2 vote for representatives to the convention which would consider secession. There were also numerous cooperationist candidates who, after being elected, suddenly became secessionists. Had it not been for fraud by the rich slaveowners, Georgia would not have seceded, and there probably would have been no civil war.

That has been thoroughly investigated, and while the vote would have been closer, it would still have been to secede,
