Bonnibel the Savannah monitor has had some ups and downs, and although this video highlights some of the more negative stuff going on, all of the issues are currently on the up and up - and should be completely taken care of soon! Hookworm-like parasites were found in her fecal test, after finding she's anemic via a blood test which are now being treated. On top of that, her enclosure had a little pest issue due to organic soil I selected. So, even if it looks like her enclosure is a mess (because it is) it's still fixable, and better than having fly infestations!

You had fungus gnats my friend. They’re totally harmless and eat fungus in the soil. There are various ways to get rid of them but the best thing would have been to put some spring tails and isopods in the soil to eat up the food they eat, put up some yellow fly paper and make sure you had some sort of drainage layer in the bottom. Even a plain layer of whole lump charcoal would have helped. You can probably still use the soil you had in there if you do those things.

Yeah I thought I knew that tiny flies from somewhere. When I had some in my potted plants a friend of mine who works at a florist, told me that the Eggs of this gnats are just to be found in the top layer of the substrate. If it is left to dry trough at the surface, the eggs will die, and to prevent the adults laying new ones, like you said yellow fly paper is really helpful. So it probably would have been enough to transfer Bonnibel to a different enclosure for some time, to let the substrate dry trough completely. Now that all the substrate is out it should be laid out to dry, and like you said a drainage layer wouldnt be the worst Idea :-)

Unfortunately they ended up getting into every bioactive enclosure I had and just kept multiplying, so I was desperate to get the main source out of the house. And savannah monitors will tear up and ruin drainage layers :/

I had to ignore a vet once when it came to my ball python. I went in to get some help with some stuck eye caps after her first shed with us (fyi he did nothing to help with that situation), and he told me to wet a pillow case and leave her tied up in it for 4-5 HOURS or if i have to OVERNIGHT so the shed will come off... Everywhere I've read, watched, or heard from other snake owners told me to never do such a thing. So i listened to the "facebook moms" as you put it😂 and just gave her another 15 minute bath in warm water and gave her a different humidity box and the caps came off fine🙌 somtimes you just have to follow your gut

Eh, the vet/doctor comparison is off though. It's not like the vet interacts with savannahs every day or learned specifically savannah care like a doctor would for people. The vet probably has treated less than 5 savannahs in his entire career. So I think it's fair to ignore the advice and go with advice from people who personally own the animals. Great video update though!
@GoHerping

That's true, if I understood correctly, the vet I acquired help from never actually cared for or had experience with savs, so yeahhhh.

@notsafeformiranda4271
@notsafeformiranda4271 5 жыл бұрын
Noooooo don't ignore the advice!! It's one thing to consult someone else or do a lot of research on your own, but don't automatically disregard their advice. Vet school is EXTREMELY hard and being able to graduate from it shows a lot of dedication. Intestinal parasites are basically the same for all animals and are almost inevitable in puppies so the treatment is the same (some of the meds might not be, but it's the same routine in dogs). If the vet sucks then I get it, but these degrees are super hard to get and take a lot of studying- it's literally harder than human med school because we have to learn it for all sorts of species and not only humans. Don't just go on a forum and trust random people, if they seem a bit sketch then get a consult from an exotics vet. I worked at a vet hospital and even though the usual patients were just dogs and cats, (because very few people have exotics in our area), we still had some exotics come in and all the vets are amazing with them and really know their stuff. My boss actually euthanized my guinea pig when I was a kid and I didn't even realize until I started working there and was like "wait a sec" lol. We've had wild raccoons, crows, opossums, snakes, birds and more. Just because they're not the regulars didn't mean that they didn't get amazing, life-saving care. On the flip side, there's an exotics vet not far from me who is horrible and has run unnecessary tests for money as well as killed animals due to handling them wrong and being overly rough on them in their already fragile state. So please trust me when I say that I understand that you don't want to blindly trust someone, but if they are reputable and you've double checked with your own research then you can.
@justinadams583
@justinadams583 5 жыл бұрын
Lol, ignoring the advice of veterinary professionals is fucking hilariously stupid. They don't need experience with these animals to run send out parasite fecal tests and blood work. Similarly, medications for hookworm and related parasites can be given without these "experts" as hook worm can be found in dogs and cats. So much ignorance it hurts.
@justinadams583
@justinadams583 5 жыл бұрын
Also, the vet may not have experience with these animals but neither do you. So yeaaahhhh. Maybe take advice from someone with a license in veterinary medicine and access to everything you'll need to make sure your lizard doesn't die. Ignorance is a killer.

That's actually so messed up. You could go to the manager and try to explain that they're super advanced, and if they don't care about the animals' wellbeing, tell them that they'll get a bad reputation and bad reviews from people who know lizards well enough so that maybe they'll care. It's bad enough that they sell critter trails, chameleons and basically all their animals from mills but... Jesus christ a monitor is farther than I thought they'd ever go. I hate people

I've seen Savannah's and Blue Tongue Skinks at my Petco, and I had to physically stop myself from buying the Savannah, which was underweight and 'on sale' for only about 15$. I can't imagine how much more money I'd be spending on vet bills on a lizard that might not survive, not to mention theoretically infecting my other reptiles - and ultimately even on sale, I'm never going to buy animals from Petco and encourage the company to think demand is up, so supply should increase as well.

Excited to see more of your savvy! I think the big metal drum is a perfect enclosure once you get it up again. I plan on mixing cyprus mulch, eco earth, and coconut fiber on top. It will cost a ton but you should only ever need to spot clean it. What I love about you is that although the savannah monitor has proven to be very difficult and stressful pet, you really have put so much effort into making her life as comfortable as possible and making her enclosure great etc, you didn’t just immediately just give up and re-sell her cheap to another person on Craig’s list who would most likely be less equipped to handle her like many people would have. I really commend you on your perseverance with Bonabel 👍 However, you really shouldn’t feel bad if you do feel the need to rehome her in the future, you’re clearly the type of honest genuine person who would ensure she went to another very good home that was suitable for her specific needs, and give the new owner full disclosure... maybe she would just be better suited to being a “display” type animal somewhere in a different environment idk. You really have done everything you can for her, and I think it is very lucky for her that you bought her from that guy, because most people wouldn’t have put in the effort for her and she would probably have been neglected. You show so much genuine care and commitment to your animals 😊

Get some isopods/springtails in the enclosure. I don’t have any issues with nats usually unless he messes outside of the water bowl (which is mainly cleaned up and the little bit that’s left is hurried mid-level for the isopods to clean up. I have well over 1200$ invested on 1 savvy in under a years time... I also have a medium sized female that came down with a neurological disorder to to a calcium issue that me nor the vet could figure out what happened but she’s doing perfectly fine and still shedding like she needs to. I keep Giger on a mix of Scott's topsoil and play sand from home depot on 15/501. There's also some cypress mulch but only in certain areas around plants and such that would sort of mimic the way the ground would naturally be in the wild. I also keep a lot of rocks and branches in his enclosure. He has burrows all over so I dont jostle it too much but the only time I experienced bugs is when I forget to replace the veggies out of the feeder bins.. Got gnats then. If you want to treat the soil, use dawn dish soap and water (like a teaspoon per gallon). Spray generously and let it dry out. Its non toxic, except to the bugs lol My Giger was farm bred and came in just a few days old on April 11th. He's a healthy chunker now, fantastic appetite, no parasites, and he seems to enjoy his enclosure. He's actually my favorite, even more than my black and white tegu. He's also pretty friendly overall. If you want some help hooking up Bonnie's cage, hmu. You have my email.

It’s pretty hard to break up, but it expands A LOT. I got it to fill a new 40 gal breeder for a Ball python and I barely had to use any of it to fill the enclosure. It’s about the same price as it is in the big bags at pet stores and you get so much more product. Hope this helps!

You could cook or microwave the substrate to kill unwanted bugs but you might want to consider culturing springtales and/or isopods as a clean-up crew and harmless insect pest repellent

This is completely unrelated to this video, but I remember in one of your old videos (I believe it was the first impressions video on either the Kenyan Sand Boa or the Chubby Frog) you said that you really like animals with the orange and brown/black coloring. I think that maybe you should try a Berber/Schnieder Skink. They are beautiful and have great personalities. I have one, as well as a Ball Python and a Chubby Frog. They are relatively uncommon in the reptile trade, and I think you would enjoy having one, and I would certainly enjoy you having one. Just a suggestion!

I got bug in my soil this week too O_o But I was in luck! I had springtails, which are so GOOD people actually buy them =P So yeah, I guess, go out and buy springtails and use in whatever soil you end up with =) They eat other bugs and are used to keep bioactive enclosures clean (both from other bugs, fungus and poops) I found they are very recommended for any bioactive enclosures (do check that the kind of pet is OK with it, but sounded like all where, some even eat them ;) ) I'm getting small monitors in about a month! Ackie monitors =) I'll get one male and two females, unrelated babies. They are all second generation made in captivity as a minimum (requirement by law here) so hopefully they'll be parasite free.

COCO BLOCK SUBSTRATE !! same concept as Eco earth blocks except its a BIG block of chunks of coco husk u soak the giant block in water and it expands . waaay waay less mess and its the first time my adult Sav buried herself in her substrate. Sometimes i catch her laying atop of it all, Almost seems like shes laying on a big fluff pillow.

For substrate pickup 2-3 5 kilogram blocks of Botanicare CocoGro from your local grow/garden store. I pay $12-13 per brick and each brick expands to over 60 liters of substrate. 2 blocks filled 2 40gallon tanks + a 20 gallon with plenty of substrate for happy burrowing. I haven’t had any problems with mold/mildew and I keep it pretty well hydrated (damn screen tops let out all of the humidity, working on a solution for that at the moment)
@technologybyjordan3776
@technologybyjordan3776 5 жыл бұрын
And if you’re concerned about bugs/mold you can hydrate the coir with boiling water in a large insulated cooler such as the kind one would bring to a sporting event. 3:1 ratio of water to coir for optimal moisture content. This will hydrate the coco so that its not super dry but also not soaking wet. If you go with this method plan on waiting nearly 24hours for the coir to cool down as the insulated cooler will retain the heat very efficiently. If done properly this methodology will pasteurize the substrate killing any non-heat resistant organisms

You can try buying bulk coco fiber or coco husk, which would help with the price. Also, you can try freezing the soil...

Buy a couple of octopus plants. Get you a couple of varied springtail cultures. Dump cultures in to your infected enclosures, springtails will outcompete your gnats. Octopus plants will catch flying ones. It took a bit but I have 50 bags of soil mixed with same amount of coconut husk in my reptile room, in various enclosures, but doing this keeps me gnat free. Use only treated water to spray your enclosures because untreated will kill off your springtails.

Don't know if you are still having trouble with a solution to this but something that worked for me when I had this issue with my monitor enclosure was putting Nematodes in the soil. They will kill off the fungus the gnats feed on in the soil and the gnats will die out. They will also be harmless to your monitor. You can order them on amazon.

I saw something that said to fight pests you can CO2 bomb the enclosure by removing the animal and placing a bowl with dry ice and water above the enclosure. The CO2 will sink down and suffocate the bugs. You would probably need a lot of dry ice for a large enclosure but it could work to save the soil you already have.

An ecoEarth/play sand mixture might be a solution! Holds humidity and supports tunnel structure. The sand will be a cheap filler as well!

Use coconut fiber but do not buy it at a pet shop, go to a hydroponic garden store. The type of place a marijuana farmer buys their supplies. It is very reasonably priced. I live in Washington state and these stores are everywhere.

Maybe try bioactive with your monitor? I know it's on a large scale, but you could use pea gravel from Home Depot as your drainage layer. And add a cleanup crew (isopods could live in that soil, maybe springtails if you keep it moist). I think super worms can also be released into the soil.

Mix Mosquito Dunk pellets into the dirt. It's a bacteria that prevents larvae from morphing into flies so they eventually die out. Soil should be kept moist.

coco coir and reptichip? Look at prococo on amazon? could stick the bricks in the oven. They each expand to 72 quarts. Also use any compressed coco coir brick (try amazon or home depot but I think the price for the 3 pack on petsmart.com (i know) is the best I have found $5.99 for 24 quarts. Expand the bricks with boiled water (boom sanitized) OR bake pre-expansion. This still might be costly but it's an option. Another option is to see if there is cypress mulch at a hardware store (Lowe's or home depot) near you but kind of like with plain old topsoil, there is always a possibility of some gnats. Also can check out some bioactive friendly groups (I like "intents reptiles" and "advancing herpetological husbandry" on facebook) for gnat control strategies. It's a normal part of cycling bioactive/planted enclosures and they usually go away with time although I know people often use sticky traps to help get rid of them). Best of luck and let me know if any of this is helpful!

Good idea! There are some plants that will naturally repel them like sage, but he'd just have to make sure it's safe. Ofc it wouldn't kill them or prevent the reproduction, but it might help a bit.
